22 RADIO TEACHER: What is adjective? Adjectives are words that describe person,
23 place, or thing. Adjectives describe the color, size, shape, age, taste, number, quality or
24 character trait of a person, place, or thing. Here are the examples of adjectives:
25 In color, we have red, blue, yellow, green, orange. In size, we have big, long, small,
short, tiny. In shape, we have round, oval, crescent, triangular, rectangular.

-MORE-
1 In age, we have old, new, young, fresh, mature. We also have in taste such as sweet,
2 bitter, salty, yummy, delicious. In texture, we have soft, smooth, hard, rough, shiny. In
3 number, we have five, many, few, several, million. In quality, we have strong, durable,
4 expensive, metallic, wooden. And lastly, in character trait, we have kind, humble,
5 helpful, generous, joyful. And here are some examples of adjectives that are used in the
6 sentence. The sky is blue. Blue is the adjective in the sentence. An elephant is a big
7 animal. Big is the adjective in the sentence. Our new dining table is round. Round is
8 the adjective in the sentence. The fruits and vegetables are fresh. Fresh is the adjective
9 in the sentence. Now, let us proceed to our lesson, the Degrees of adjectives.
10 Degrees of adjectives are used in describing and comparing persons, places, or things.
11 The degrees of adjectives are positive, comparative, and superlative degrees.
12 Positive adjective describes one person, place, or thing. Comparative adjective
13 compares two persons, places, or things. Superlative adjective describes the one
14 among other persons, places, or things.
15 What is Positive Degree of Adjective? The positive degree of adjective is used to
16 describe one person, place, or thing. Example: The carabao is very big. My school bag
17 is new. The words big and new are in the positive degree of adjective.
18 How about the Comparative Degree of Adjective? The comparative degree of
19 adjective is used to compare the quality of two persons, places, or things. It is formed
20 by adding -r or -er or more to the positive degree of adjective. The words than and
21 compared to is used indicate comparison and that the comparative degree is used.
22 There are rules we follow in using –r or –er in comparative degree of adjectives.
23 Number one. If the positive adjective ends in e, add -r to form the comparative
24 adjective.
25 Examples: cute – cuter, white – whiter
Number two. 2. If the positive adjective ends in a consonant preceded

-MORE-
1 by a short vowel, double the consonant and add -er to form the comparative adjective.
2 Examples: hot – hotter, red – redder
3 Number three. If the positive adjective ends in a consonant blend, add -er to form the
4 comparative adjective. Examples: cold – colder, soft – softer
5 Number four. If the positive adjective ends in y preceded by a consonant, change y to i
6 then add -er to form the comparative adjective.
7 Examples: shiny – shinier, yummy – yummier
8 Here are some examples of comparative degree used in a sentence.
9 First example: My school bag is newer than my shoes. We add –er to the positive
10 adjective new. Second example: The carabao is bigger than the goat. The comparative
11 adjective in the sentence is bigger. According to the rule, if the positive adjective ends
12 in a consonant preceded by a short vowel, double the consonant and add -er to form the
13 comparative adjective. And also, the word than in the sentence shows that comparative
14 degree is used.
15 Superlative Degree of Adjective is used to describe the person, place, or thing with
16 the highest quality among others. The superlative degree is formed by adding -est or
17 most to the positive degree of adjective. The words of all, among the indicate that the
18 superlative degree is used. Here are the rules in using –st or –est. Number one. If the
19 positive adjective in e, add -st to form the superlative adjective.
20 Examples: cute – cutest, white– whitest. Number two. If the positive adjective ends
21 in a consonant preceded by a short vowel, double the consonant and add -est to form
22 the superlative adjective. Examples: hot – hottest, red– reddest
23 Number three. If the positive adjective ends in a consonant blend, add -est to form the
24 superlative adjective. Examples: cold – coldest, soft – softest
25 Number four. If the positive adjective ends in y preceded by a consonant,

-MORE-
1 change y to i then add -est to form the superlative adjective.
2 Examples: shiny – shiniest, yummy– yummiest. Here are some examples of using
3 superlative adjective in a sentence. The carabao is the biggest of all animals in the
4 farm. The superlative adjective is biggest. It is formed by adding –est to the adjective
5 big. And the word of all indicates that superlative degree is used. Second example: Our
6 teacher is the tallest of all people in our school. We add –est to the positive adjective
7 tall to make it superlative degree. And the word of all indicates that superlative degree
8 is used. And now, let us read examples on the table showing the degrees of
9 comparison. In Positive degree, the word is big. Its comparative is bigger, and the
10 superlative is biggest. New, newer, newest; tall, taller, tallest; small, smaller, smallest;
11 old, older, oldest; short, shorter, shortest; young, younger, youngest; warm, warmer,
12 warmest; cold, colder, coldest; and soft, softer, softest.
