Should Take a Stronger Position over Crisis in Syria. The crisis in Syria is a result of the rotests that !ere organi"ed and held# in order to affect release of olitical risoners in the country. These rotests began on $arch %&11 !hereby the Syrian security officers attem ted to sto the masses from rotesting by attacking them !ith batons and detaining some accidental individuals. The President of Syria 'ashar al()ssad !as very resistant and did not !ant to make any concession or ans!er demands of the eo le* he decided to de loy troo s as the most effective method of settling the issue. +e a ointed naval shi s and demanded that those rotesting be shot to death !hile others !ere burned off by the tanks. ) number of international olitical forces and organi"ations attem ted to intervene in a conflict* nevertheless# most of their attitudes !ere rather uncertain and !eak. The United Nations ,rgani"ation# !hose main aim is maintenance of eace# also failed to take a strong olitical stand on the issue -Dagi 1./. This a er takes a close look at the events in the Syrian Crisis and the reaction of the U.N. to it# in order to rove that the ,rgani"ation should have taken a stronger osition over the conflict. The nation !as tired of the regime of the President al()ssads government and olicy of killing those# !ho tried to rotest or stand against his interests. They !ere demanding a freedom of s eech and e0 ression# and media !here the truth !as told# and all kind of ne!s !ere resented fairly and com rehensively. )ccording to UN Debate# the

The President of Syria !as not ready to satisfy the demands of the nation* the only thing he !anted !as to remain in o!er for as long as ossible. )s a result# 'ashar al()ssad !ished to destroy everyone# !ho tried to overthro! his regime in Syria. +e de loyed troo s to kill the grou s of rotesting eo le* moreover# later he attem ted to shuffle off the blame on to foreign cons irators and armed grou s. ,n 14 5ebruary# the President tried to trick the Syrian civilians by asking them to sign a referendum to ensure that the violence in the country !ould end. Nevertheless# due to hel and intervention of other governmental o!ers that !ere concerned !ith the current situation# this document !as not signed. The United States analysts and members of the o osition !ere not convinced that this referendum !ould be essential as the osed

country e0ecuted such olitical regime. The main grou s involved in this crisis included the Syrian National Council# the 5ree Syrian )rmy# and the National Coordination Committee. These movements !ere demanding rotection of the eo le in Syria* in addition# these grou s !ere against any kind of dialogue# u on !hich the government called# they also su orted the

These issues !ere the main motivation that made President al()ssad e0ercise e0cessive o!er over those !ho !ere against his government. +e could not stand the fact that a mere civilian !as lanning to overthro! his regime. The 5ree Syrian )rmy included old members of the military forces# !ho intended to change their country. This fact made the President feel that his eo le acted behind his back and lotted against him*

'oth the rotesting grou s and the government !ere not ready to give in to the other grou s demands* thus# the conflicts had lasted for a very long eriod and caused the death of numerous civilians. The U.N. mission to kee the eace in the country !as confused and delayed since the President !ould make the civilians believe that the attacks and violence cases being re orted in the country !ere carried out by e0ternal grou s. The U.N. mission !as e0tremely affected by the current situation in Syria* thus# organi"ation seemed to be ineffective. The U.N. needed to be more consistent and determined in its olicy about the current issue in Syria* it should be mentioned that similar situations had already occurred in the ast -6uth 2./. 5or e0am le# the leader of 'osnia reminded the U.N. that it should be very careful about the decision it make on ho! the organi"ation !ould resolve the crisis in Syria. ) fe! years ago# !hen 'osnia !as involved in crisis that !as similar to the one in Syria# the U.N. Security Council !as very reluctant in its actions* in the end# the crises became e0cessively violent and caused the death of many civilians. 3n our ers ective# the U.N. a eared to be e0tremely slo! in solving the issues in Syria. The ,rgani"ation !as su osed to intervene immediately regardless of the claims that the

President of the country !as making# and try all its best to rotect the Syrian citi"ens from the brutality they e0 erienced from the government. 3t should have influenced the situation# in order to overthro! the current government at the e0 ense of the civilians eace. The U.N. is making very uncertain ste s* in addition# these actions take very long to be im lemented. This hesitancy

The ,rgani"ation seems to have forgotten about the mistakes that it once made in the ast due to delay and reluctance over the issue. The United Nations should try to make a decisive move to!ards resolving the Crisis in Syria in order to avoid global community being in doubt of its erformance and effectiveness. 6ecently# the organi"ation seems to take e0tremely reluctant and dilatory moves !hen it comes to resolving conflicting issues in various nations -Sassoon 2./. 3ts !eak and slo! decisions have caused and brought about the death of innocent citi"ens in various countries# for e0am le# 'osnia and Syria. This situation has raised a concern amongst most members of the United Nations ,rgani"ation about its credibility and authority. )s a result# the U.N. needs to act s!iftly in this issue of Syria to ensure that its members do not lose trust in its erformance and decide to 8oin other global movement. )s a rule# !hen an organi"ation is considered ineffective by its members# it becomes e0tremely difficult for it to function smoothly since most members do not fully su ort its initiatives and olicies* thus# its functions are affected in one !ay or another.

The U.N. should also enhance various rinci les# !hich it !ill be using and im lementing to ensure that their mission of enhancing eace amongst member countries is carried out !ithout much hustle. The countries in 9uestion should also try to ensure that they are in su U.N.s activity by a lying the decisions made by the U.N. The U.N. is making a great mistake by trying to solve the Syrian issue from a far(fetched ers ective. The United Nation Security Council is addressing the issue of refugees from Syria# but it fails to study the situation in the country and solve the main issue instead of managing the sym toms. Those# !ho have managed to leave the country# are not in danger as com ared to ort of the

They cannot get back home* thus# their families and businesses# !hich might be still living in Syria# remain to be a long history and old memories. The U.N. should !ork in a systematic manner and try to ensure that# before handling those !ho !ere forced out of the state# those !ho remained are catered for and their eace is guaranteed. This strategy !ill ensure that the conflicts are resolved eacefully* thus# those !ho run a!ay from home could come back to their families and continue living in eace. No!adays# the Syrian regime is illegal and evil according to the Universal Declaration of +uman 6ights* it is forcing neighboring state to form coalitions to fight against enemies for the sake of rotection the o ulation. Nevertheless# some critics still feel that other countries should not intervene in the Syrian issue# but the Syrian government and civilians should resolve the crisis on their o!n. The crisis !as a result of the eo le trying to condemn !hat the current government !as actually doing to the nation. The eo le !ere trying to fight for their rights against the government# !hich had denied them the freedom of s eech and e0 ression amongst other issues. The fact is that# if these nations remain ersistent about solving this issue# they in one !ay or another !ill involve in a regional conflict because of different interests and e0 ectations from their interest in the crisis. 3n conclusion# it is obvious that the U.N. has failed to address and resolve the crisis in Syria* as a result# it caused the gro!th in the number of Syrian refugees. The Syrian government should also resign amid ublic criticism to ensure that a recogni"able change takes lace in the state. The crisis !as a result of national rotest movements against the arrest of the o ositional

leaders. The regime !ished to carry out its !ork in its o!n !ay !ithout minding ho! eo le !ould think or feel about the olicy. The government tried to stand against the mission of the rotesting eo le by the use of e0cessive o!ers. The President em loyed tanks and gun shooting strategy to meet rotesters !ith deadly force !hile some individuals !ere caught and im risoned unfairly. Such ineffectiveness and reluctance aved !ay for ne! issues to emerge in the nearest future -Shaba"" .2/. ;hile Syria itself is still burning in fire of the crisis bet!een the government and the citi"ens rotesting against the government actions# neighboring countries are trying to turn a thing to account. The !eak erformance of the international organi"ations rovides that the Syrian government !ith a good chance and ground to continue its ruthless behavior to!ards the nation !ithout anyone 9uestioning its actions. 3n such a manner# the United Nations ,rgani"ation seems to have feared the condition in the country and been afraid of confronting the Syrian government.
