Program:PlatformDevelopment
Budget: Category: Population Served: -None None None None Program Description: Our Platform Development team is the backbone of our organization. The goal is to improve our online learning platform to offer students a world-class personalized learning experience across multiple subject areas. This online platform is what makes us inherently scalable as a world-class free solution. Over the next few years, we will continue to build out this platform to enable deep personalization and invest in analytics and research so that we can better diagnose studentsabilities and give them smart recommendations of what to do next. We will also be creating more functionality to help students interact more meaningfully with other students and teachers to enhance their learning (e.g. via communication features, data dashboards). Finally, we will be significantly scaling our reach through internationalization of the site, development of mobile applications and creation of tools and features to improve overall engagement and retention. Program:ContentCreation,CurationandTranslation
Budget: Category: Population Served: -None None None None Program Description: We already have a fair amount of content, but we are just scratching the surface of what needs to be in place for students and teachers to view us as a comprehensive resource. This requires close engagement and partnerships with world-class content creators and influencers (teachers, academics, industry professionals or institutions) so that we have a comprehensive but carefully selected set of resources on our site. We will also partner with organizations to translate the content into the major languages of the world. Program:AdoptionandAwarenessPartnerships
Budget: Category: Population Served: -None None None None Program Description: We will continue developing partnerships with institutions around the world (both traditional education institutions and other relevant organizations) to extend the reach of our platform and enable the development of new teaching and learning models. This will help us identify and enable innovative pilots and drive grassroots adoption. As we grow the resources and tools on our site, it is also important that we deliberately get the word out ourselves and help others do so this includes working with other organizations on awareness efforts, managing our messaging and media approach, and developing a community campaign to further scale our efforts. Chief Executive
SalmanKhan Term: SinceMay2008

(GuideStar Exchange, November 2013)

Chief Executive Profile: Sal Khan is the founder of the Khan Academy (khanacademy.org), a nonprofit with the mission of providing free, high-quality education for anyone, anywherein the world. Sal was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He graduated from MIT in 1998 with three degrees: two bachelor of science degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering/computer science; and a master of science degree in electrical engineering. He began his career working in technology and later earned his MBA at Harvard Business School. Sal then became an analyst at a Boston based hedge fund which later relocated to Palo Alto in 2005. In 2004 as a side project, Sal began tutoring his young cousin in math, communicating by phone and using an interactive notepad. By 2006, word got around and Sal was tutoring 15 family friends and cousins as a hobby. To better scale, he began writing software to give his cousins practice and feedback in mathematics. To complement this software, he also began posting videos of his hand- scribbled tutorials on YouTube. Demand took off, and in 2009, when the practice problems and instructional videos were reaching tens of thousands of students per month, he quit his day job to commit himself fully to the not-for-profit Khan Academy. In late 2012, Khan released his book The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined.
