0 SCOPE: This procedure covers the technique and acceptance for direct contact pulse echo angle beam examination !hich is applicable to gas pipe line !eldments having diameters ranges upto 1"""mm# thic$ness ranges from 1% to 5"mm of carbon and lo! allo& steel# 2.0 PERSONNEL CERTIFICATION: All personnel performing ultrasonic examination and evaluating acceptance or re'ection to code specification requirements shall be minimum (evel )) qualified in accordance !ith *+T,T-,1A# 3.0 CALIBRATION OF EQUIPMENT:

.#1#1 The instrument shall be pulse echo t&pe and shall be equipped !ith the stepped gain control,calibrated unit at % d/ or less# The s&stem shall have a minimum capabilit& for examination at frequencies from "#5 to 1% 012# .#1#% The instrument used for performing the testing shall provide linear vertical Presentation !ith in 34 55 of full screen height# Evaluation of screen height linearit& shall be performed at the each period of extended use 6or ever& three month !hich ever is less7# The instrument shall utili2e an amplitude control accurate over its useful range 34 %"5 of the nominal amplitude ratio to allo! measurement of indication be&ond the linear range of vertical displa& on the screen# Amplitude control (inearit& shall be performed at beginning of each period of extended use 6for ever& three months !hich ever is less7#

PAGE % OF 5 Proper functioning of equipment shall be calibrated and chec$ed b& the use of the calibration standard at beginning and end of each or at an& time that functioning is suspected as minimum if it is determined that is not !or$ing properl& all products that have tested since the last valid equipment calibration shall be reexamined

4.0 PREPARATION OF TEST SURFACE: 8#1 9ualit& of Test *urface: The test surface should have a mean roughness ; 5<m 8#% -leaning of surface: After processing one must remove the adhering dirt and oil /& means of suitable cleaning agent# )f required the surface can be dried up !ith a suitable paper or cleaning !ool# 5.0 COUPLANT: Oil !ith grease shall be used as a couplant# 6.0 TECHNIQUE: The test shall be performed b& the direct contact technique# 7.0 MODE OF PRPPAGATION IN THE MATERIAL: =#1 An Angle beam in transverse mode of propagation shall be used# .0 PROBE: >#1 An Angle beam of ="? shall be used# An angle beam of 85? also can be used !herever necessar&# 6To evaluate root discontinuities7 !.0 SCANNING: @#1 *canning can be carried out on the both sides of the !elding 6Total 1 s$ip distance7 at the inside !elding of the pipe#
