Last weeks breakdown of campaign contributions and expenditures to and by our local City Council candidates was so much fun, we thought wed go one better this week, and have a look at what City Hall has been spending our hard-won tax dollars on. We took a look at January through March of this year, and came up with these delightful numbers:

1 WORD
ST
MIKE REYNOLDS
WITH
than create dependence on the part of a daily newspaper? This has worked for centuries the world over, and its why the HZ cant get too sassy when covering local government. Theres nothing more dangerous to a politician than a news writer that doesnt owe them something. Well done, City Hall. You got it goin ON!

Presents

$332,224.52 to the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce

Keep in mind that a chamber of commerce is not a government entity. Its a private club for business people. The actual purpose of a chamber of commerce is to lobby government on behalf of the business community, and being on the Citys payroll certainly neuters its ability to do that. Most of the members dont mind though, because they use Chamber events as an opportunity to network and drink to excess, and having had a good time at the parties, dont put up much of a fight when the City starts throwing road spikes in the markets path to town. Bread and circuses, as it were. Getting the Chamber on the Citys dole is one the smartest, most diabolical things the City has ever pulled off. The Chambers members think they have more influence at City Hall, when in fact, their voice is effectively silenced. The liaison between City and Chamber, Chamber President Michael Meek, is essentially an apologist for the City, selling the governments plans to Chamber members, rather than the other way around. If youve ever wondered why the Houstonowned Herald-Zeitung never has anything but praise for the Chamber and how it operates, you likely havent considered the fact that the HZs Editor-in-Chief, Neice Bell, serves on the Chambers Board of Directors. In short, the private organization she helps run, (and should be reporting on, both as a political interest group and recipient of public funds), collects taxpayer money, and the daily paper shes in charge of is also on the governments payroll. Thats two vitally important institutions under City Halls control. And its damn good politics. Masterful. And since it came up:

$68,468.13 to the Law Offices of McKamie-Krueger

Big Mac is the lawyer that manhandled the Citys disposable container ban defense, and talked City Council into appealing their loss for the worst possible reasons. They might be working on other cases too. We dont care. All that interests us the amount of money this guy is able to pull out of the taxpayer for failing. Im about to give up on this whole Protestant work ethic thing, as clearly, the big money is in convincing others into betting on the wrong horse, and then blaming the track.

Comal County Fairgrounds

$43,049.10 to the Humane Society of New Braunfels

We support the Humane Society with free marketing assistance to get their homeless animals adopted out. But with this kind of money coming in, were hard pressed to wonder why they cant buy their ads. I mean really.

$14,421.68 to Pristine Texas Rivers

They kept their mouth shut while the City misrepresented how much trash was collected from the rivers back when the disposable container ban was in play, and have been rewarded ever since with tasty contracts to clean those rivers, even after disposable containers were banned on said rivers. Another major political coup.

Mmm so HOT

$10,192.63 to the Houston-Owned Herald-Zeitung

Every politician knows its important to control the media, and what better way to do that TXCITIZEN.COM

The following are Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) expenditures. HOT payments are to be made to organizations that entice guests to visit New Braunfels for an overnight stay. As youll see in the paragraphs to follow, the requirements are somewhat, uh, flexible. All of these organizations have legitimate value. Our point is that they dont meet the HOT funding standard, and in that respect, hotel operators and their guests are getting the short end of the stick. Continued on page 5.

So let me just say this, which applies to all of the items in this section: Advertising locally doesnt bring in out-of-town, overnight guests. $1,450.00 to the Barbershop Receipt of HOT funds should be contingent Harmony Society (Hill Country Chorus) on proof that a decent percentage of people Bringing your director in from another city who came to an event stayed overnight in a and putting him up overnight isnt exactly local hotel. That requires a different marketing embracing the intent of the HOT. The group tack, and some package deals to make it takes an annual out-of-town trip as well, and work. But its worth the effort for all that sweet is all but invisible here with the exception of dough. Well even show you how to do it in their annual concert, which is marketed to exchange for a nice pile of clams. Continued from page 3. locals, and their ice cream fund-raising booth at Wurstfest where they haul in the big money. Maybe they think theyre supposed to use the HOT cash to stay overnight somewhere else, and perhaps thats for the best. Im going to lose it if I hear Goodbye, My Coney Island Baby even one more time.

Huge Play Area for the Kids Live Music Thursday-Sunday Happy Hour Monday-Friday 3:00-6:30pm

Brazen Plug:
Come out and see why The Fantasticks is the longest running musical in history of the WORLD. Seriously. 42 years Off-Broadway*, with 17,162 consecutive performances. A Chorus Line wishes it had that kind of run. So does Cats. And that one with the Rocky Dennis looking guy in the tuxedo that lives in the sewers under France. They wish they had that kind of longevity. So does that other one in France where the reluctant prostitute gets her teeth stolen. And the one in Texas with the less-reluctant prostitutes that get to keep their teeth. That one only ran 1,584 performances, because it sucked, even though Tommy Tune did the choreography and it had the A&M football team in it. Not the real team, I mean. They had actors playing the Aggies because the guys in the show needed to know how to read and stuff (SNAP). I saw it with Ann Margaret back in 01 and man, it was awful. And whats the big deal with Ann Margaret, anyway? Dont ask me, I dont know. Dolly Parton was probably better in the movie. Which I didnt see. I did like the Marvin Zindler character though, as one might expect. Wouldnt have minded more of that guy. Anyway, Im sure none of this is anything to worry about. See you at the Seekatz this weekend. \m/ Mike Reynolds Publisher/Editor-in-Chief *Per the Rules of Show Business, Off-Broadway theaters seat 100 to 499 guests, while Broadway theaters can accommodate 500 and up. Philistines think the designation has to do with what streets the theaters are on. You know better.

TEX-MEX COCINA Y CANTINA 830.629.0777 1724 Hunter Road, New Braunfels

$15,066.00 to the Brauntex Theater

They did a lot of work to make that place most righteous for theatrical productions, only to turn it into a concert venue. Good thing, too, because if theres one audience thats underserved in New Braunfels, its live music fans. Maybe the Tex could see its way clear to offer local theatrical producers a break on facility rental, what with the taxpayer subsidy and all. Thatd be nice.

$3,916.25 to the Christian Youth Theater of San Antonio

They have a theater program for kids that currently meets in town once a week, and a one-night student showcase scheduled at the Brauntex, (which already gets HOT money). Hard to say how many people are staying overnight for that show. We imagine its underwhelming.

$75 Per Person $140 Per Couple $550 Per Table (8)

$10,000.00 to the Mid-Texas Symphony

Why not? Mid-Tex is a huge tourist non-draw from Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas, each of which have their own independent orchestras right there at home, plus multiple topflight college programs. Mid-Tex runs six shows a year, three of which are in New Braunfels.

Im in the NBTC production (The Fantasticks) that opens this weekend at the Seekatz Opera House. It would be unwise for me to mock this money, as I work with these people and benefit from the financial support. On the other hand, I have an obligation to you, dear reader, to lay out the facts as I find them. Besides, its too late to recast my part, and in show business, any publicity is good publicity. AROUND&ABOUT

Suspicious that the Easter Bunny had been holding out on them, a pack of about a dozen kids took turns beating him with a stick last Sunday at Oma Gruene's Secret Garten. Their skepticism was validated when it was discovered that Mr Bunny was indeed full of undistributed confections. TX Citizen staff helped Mr Bunny hide over 250 eggs around the grounds prior to the event, yet failed to mention his impending thwacking. Must have been distracted.

The fabulous El Gallo teaches two aggravatingly self-centered young lovers a life lesson or two in New Braunfels Theater Companys production of The Fantasticks, the show that holds the record for consecutive performances of an Off-Broadway musical, clocking in at over 17,000 during its original 40+ year run. The curtain goes up April 25, 26 and 27, and May 2, 3 and 4 at the Seekatz Opera House. Showtime is 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. Fun Fact: The show was written by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, both of whom are TEXANS who met at UT.

Dear Mexican: Our grandparents came from Mexico. The entire next generation spoke Spanish. However, in my generation, pretty much none of us do. One cousins daughter does because the cousin married a fluently bilingual spouse. Most white people I know have long ago lost both, generally, awareness of what their actual ethnic roots are and the original language their people came to America with, when it wasnt English. Heck, British English can be pretty confusing. What me and my cousins, and most of our kids know of Spanish is what we learn in Spanish classes. Its clear we lost our language treasure. Fortunately, we love being Chicanos. What do you know of this loss on a local or national scale? Spangless Chicano

The leastpreference who listen to music exclusively in Spanish, vaccinated pendejos? Areas where rich, English and Spanish, or exclusively in English stupid gabachos were the majority. Areas preferring with the most-vaccinated people? MexicanEnglish between the first (49, 31, 18), heavy cities. Mexicans, unlike gabachos, second (18, 26, 54), and third (10, 16, dont have the luxury of believing far-fetched 74) generations, respectively,; the same conspiracy theories put out by celebrity happened with language preferences in chichis that put our children at riskweve changed dramatically toward watching television for the first (40, 34, 25), got curanderos for that. second (12, 17, 69), and third (5, 11, 83) generations as well. ASK A MEXICAN!
By Gustavo Arellano

Special Italian Edition

I am constantly in disbelief that so many undocumented immigrants primarily Mexicansrisk life and limb to enter the U.S. to, as theyll say, provide a better life for their children. Arent they aware that U.S. kids now are fatter, sicker, and dumber compared to most of the rest of the world? Since U.S. kids are presently mandated 68 risky, experimental vaccines by age 18, we now have epidemics of autism, asthma, learning disorders, diabetes, childhood cancers, ADHD, etc. We have the most vaccinated children in the world, with many more vaccines on the way: fodder for Big Pharma. Conversely, most racists think illegals are dirty and bring diseases into this country, even though its been proven immigrant children are very healthy UNTIL theyve assimilated into the U.S. Your thoughts?
