Understanding Beta Ratings of Liquid Filters

odern engines are developing at an unprecedented rate and frequently require highly efcient ltration. Liquid lters are engineered to meet the specic requirements of the equipment manufacturers and as such are required to have exacting efciency ratings.

The ISO test method involves using particle counters and test uid that has contaminants added to it. Contaminants of a given known particle size are counted both before and after the lter. When someone asks you for a 5 micron lter you should always ask them At what Beta ratio?

unintentional removal of additives from oils. Less efcient media will generally result in a longer element life, but does so by allowing a higher percentage of contaminant to pass straight through the lter. This may result in a dramatic shortening of component life. At Donaldson we literally have thousands of different oil, fuel and hydraulic lters engineered to the specic requirements of your equipment manufacturer. Please consult your Donaldson representative for specialist advice.

We all talk in micron sizing (1 micron = 1 millionth of a metre) but we need to Clearly a media with a ratio of 1000 is far understand that micron sizing more efcient than one with a rating of is of little importance 2 on that given particle size. without some measure of the medias Your shirt sleeve may well efciency on a given smallest have a Beta ratio higher strand particles size. It the human eye of hair than 2000 on particles can see could be said that a 80m 40m the size of marbles. The roll of toilet paper same sleeve may have white may stop 10 micron blood cell a Beta ratio of less than particles, but at what 25m 2 on particles the size efciency or what of talcum powder. Beta percentage of 10 micron ratings can be used to bacteria talcum particles would that roll of 2m powder grain explain the efciency of paper stop? 10m of table salt ltration for all uids, oil, 100m diesel, petrol etc; its simply a To remove confusion measurement. manufacturers should always describe the performance of the media used It is important that both the micron sizing inside an element by its Beta ratio. and Beta ratio is matched to the application. Tighter and more efcient media than ISO 16889 (International Standard) lists eight specied by the manufacturer can result common Beta ratios used to report lter in shortened element life and greater efciency, these are Beta 2, 10, 20, 75, 100, pressure increases. In some extreme cases 200, 1000 & 2000. So what does each one of mis-application this can even result in the mean and why have so many? Beta Ratio () 2 10 20 75 100 200 1000 2000 How Many Particles of a Given Size Will Pass Through the Filter? 1 out of every 2 particles 1 out of every 10 particles 1 out of every 20 particles 1 out of every 75 particles 1 out of every 100 particles 1 out of every 200 particles 1 out of every 1000 particles 1 out of every 2000 particles Actual Filter Efciency 50% 90% 95% 98.7% 99% 99.5% 99.9% 99.95%

Based on the image show n below, the lter has on ly allowed 1 pa rticle out of every 10 gr eater than 5 micron to pa ss through. So this lter will have a rating of 10 = 5m .
