N.C. Essential Standards Lesson Scenario

The instructor will teach about the most prominent figures in US History, with a special focus on the Founding Fathers. Such figures will include, but are not limited too, Presidents from George Washington through the Reconstruction Era, Benjamin Franklin, Eli Whitney(inventor of the Cotton Gin), Nat Turner(slave rebellion), Martin Luther King Jr.(African American equality), Susan B. Anthony(womans rights). Students will learn the influence each person had on the history of the US, their major contributions to the government and/or society. The instructor with lightly cover all the presidents, from George Washington through Ulysses S. Grant, and major contributions they made, such as Thomas Jeffersons Louisiana Purchase and Abraham Lincolns Gettysburg Address. Students will then focus on the Founding Fathers of the US. The instructor will introduce them to prominent figures that were present at the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Peyton Randolph, George Washington, James Madison, Samuel Adams, and Benjamin Franklin will be discussed in depth. The students will learn the difference of a reliable, trustworthy website and a bogus website. Many examples will be shown of both groups, such as www.history.com and www.wikipedia.com. The students will also learn characteristics of the different types of websites. Reliable websites will have many sources listed at the bottom of the website, as well as in-text citations throughout the articles, sometimes there will be diagrams, charts, and pictures on display. Unreliable websites will have ads and can be edited by anyone who is a member of the site. The instructor will then go in-depth on plagiarism and how to properly cite sources. The instructor will introduce students to online websites that help them put the sources into MLA style. The instructor will perform a number of examples for the students, as well as give them certain books and reliable websites to put into MLA style using one of the online tools for assistance. The students will then be divided into groups of 2 or 3 and will be assigned a name of one of the

Founding Fathers. They will then be expected to research more information on the life and service of their men. Students will use the web tool Prezi to create an interactive power point and submit it to the instructor via e-mail as well as present their findings to the class.
