District Convention (DCON)

On April 11th, members of our Evergreen Valley Key Club attended the District Convention in Sacramento. Here are their recollections of their experiences:
DCON was a convention that totally changed my viewpoint on key club. Key club was, for my freshman and sophomore years, a service club that looked good. This congregation of key clubs from across mountains and oceans really opened my eyes and showed me That key club wasn't just a local club that got you into colleges and made you look good, it is an international organization that strives to change the world through each member's dedication, service, and efforts. The many people that I met at DCON were all so unique, kind, and welcoming! The memories of rooming with my fellow crazy key clubbers will always be one of my best! DCON was, overall, a symposium of the best, craziest, amazing, talented, loving, and inspiring people on the world! ~Hannah Nguyen
Going to my DCON was a truly memorable experience. I got a interesting mix of knowledge, inspiration, and bonding. The many workshops taught me more about balancing out my life and also other important lessons. During the first general meeting, I saw just how spirited key clubbers were. There were spirit battles left and right and also flags and banners raised to the air. The roar when we all were asked, "How do you feel?" was immense and truly a sight to be seen. Outside of the convention, I had a chance to meet people from different parts of California and other states. Best of all, I got to know the people from my own club better and spent hours together talking and bonding in our hotel room. ~Evan Cheng

DCON was one the greatest events of my junior year. The first day, everyone goes all out in spirit attire and cheers. DCON wasnt just fun, but it was informational, from the hilarious motivational speaker, Keith Hawkin, to the workshops. Everything was very helpful, whether you are on the board or not. The best part is the hotel rooms. Everyone is still pumped from all the spirit that they come back to the hotel all ecstatic. I mean one of my roommates broke the ac, and was so loud she made those security people knock on our door to tell us to be quiet. If youre debating if you should go next year or not, you should, because you get to hang out and meet new and amazing people who all love to serve and be a part of Key Club too! Its an event you dont want to miss, because I mean what if you get the digits? Oh yeah, the food was hella good. ~ Lilian Nguyen

Being at my first year at DCON, I had no clue what to expect besides showing my Key Club pride. Turns out, pride was in everyone. There were so many spirit cheers; I didnt expect so many people to be so spiritually active into a club before. This sparked a new retrospect of how my view of Key Club changed to become a view that makes me more motivated to become a better Key Clubber. Besides screaming my lungs off to represent my division, I learned so much more about Key Club that a normal member wouldnt. I learned how much Key Club impacted the world, such as helping PTP, raise millions of dollars, and many hours of service that helped organizations in all of California, Nevada, and Hawaii. Also, I learned there was an International level, where Key Club extends all over the world, and our district only consists of three states. I also learned to stay positive, as an inspirational speaker named Keith Hawkins motivated all of us to believe in ourselves and be optimistic. Although I have paid the 300 dollar fee, and had minimal sleep, DCON was a memory I will cherish and pursue the following year, and the experience I gained was far greater than my contributions. ~Justin Yu
