Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 offers great integration with other applications and software, such

as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Mobile Services, SharePoint, and other systems and devices.
Its a great collaborative and messaging communication tool that offers efficiency, easy access, and
ample security and protection.
If youre going to be working with !change Server "##$, here are five common administration tasks
that you should be familiar with.
1. Exporting To and Importing From PST Files
!change Server "##$ stores email data in %& 'et database files and if the contents of a users
mailbo! must be transported away from the message e!change, the only choice is to e!port the data
into a PS( file. )s an administrator, you may also run into scenarios where mail data stored in a PS(
file needs to be imported to the message e!change.
In earlier versions of !change, this process was accomplished using the !Merge tool, because
!change Server had no native support for PS( files. )s of the release of !change Server "##$, SP*
the import+mailbo! and e!port+mailbo! cmdlets have the ability to directly import from or e!port to
pst files.
(o e!ecute the !port+Mailbo! cmdlet you must be delegated the !change Server )dministrator role
and the local )dministrators group for the target server. ,ou must also have permissions set to full
access on both the source and target mailbo!es. (he synta! for a typical e!port+mailbo! cmdlet would
be-
ExportMail!ox Identit" #ser$domain PSTFolderPath %&'director"'target.pst
)lthough SP* has added direct support for PS( files, there are still some limitations when e!porting
mail data. (here is no e.uivalent function to e!port mail data using the !change Management
/onsole. ,ou cannot e!port data from a public folder database and you cannot e!port data to a PS(
file from a mailbo! that is in a recovery storage group0 when e!porting to a PS( file, messages
contained in the dumpster will not be recovered.
(he synta! for a typical import+mailbo! cmdlet would be-
ImportMail!ox Identit" #ser$domain PSTFolderPath %&'director"'so#rce.pst
)s with the e!port+mailbo! cmdlet, most of the same limitations apply to the import+mailbo! cmdlet
with a few e!ceptions. 1hen importing the contents of the transport, dumpster will also be imported if
they e!ist in the PS( file, and the mailbo! to which you import the data must already e!ist.
2. (dding ( )e* Mail!ox
)dding new mailbo!es to the mail e!change is deffinitely one of the most common tasks you will

$. (he 5ew Mailbo! window displays a summary of the information and settings that will be applied
for the new account. /lick the 5ew button to create the new mailbo!
=. On the Summary page you will see if the new+mailbo! command was successful and the cmdlet
used to create the mailbo!. /lick ;inish and youre done>
+. ,emoving a Mail!ox
4emoving mailbo!es is somewhat simpler, as there are no settings or user information to input. 1hen
you remove a mailbo! the associated user account in )ctive %irectory is also removed.
,ou can specify if you want the mailbo! permanently removed in which case the data is deleted from
the mailbo! server. Otherwise the mailbo! data is retained for a period of thirty days ?default@ and then
deleted. 3ere are the steps-
*. Open the !change Management /onsole and e!pand the 4ecipient /onfiguration, then click on
Mailbo!
". Select the mailbo! that you want to remove
6. /lick 4emove under the name of the selected mailbo!
9. /lick ,es in the warning pane

-. %onnecting a Mail!ox
)t some point you may need to reconnect a disconnected mailbo! to a )ctive %irectory user account.
;or e!ample, a mailbo! from a departed employee that will now be used by a new employee. (o
connect the mailbo! follow these steps-
*. Open the !change Management /onsole and e!pand the 4ecipient /onfiguration then click
%isconnected Mailbo!
". ,ou will be presented with a list of all disconnected mailbo!es for the local server. /lick /onnect
under the mailbo! you want to reconnect and the connect mailbo! wi2ard will open
6. )ssuming you are reconnecting a user mailbo!, click 7ser Mailbo! then click ne!t. 5ote that the
associated account must be in the same forest ad the server from which the mailbo! is being
reconnected
9. On the Mailbo! Settings pane, select the user that you want to connect the mailbo! to
:. Set the alias for the mailbo! and assign any re.uired mailbo! policies, then click 5e!t
<. On the /onnect Mailbo! pane review your configuration settings and click /onnect
$. (he /ompletion pane will indicate if the mailbo! was connected successfully, if so click ;inish to
close the wi2ard
.. /isa!ling a Mail!ox
,ou may be re.uired to disable a mailbo! if you want a user to retain a )ctive %irectory account, but
either temporarily or permanently remove their use of the mailbo!. (o disable a mailbo! follow these
steps-
*. Open the !change Management /onsole, e!pand the 4ecipient /onfiguration and click Mailbo!
