In what ways does

your media product

use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real
media products?
Genre Research
My media product falls into the genre of psychological thriller. This
genre has been very popular over the 40s, 50s, and 60s, as the
media has spared a fascination for the psychotic, glamouri!ing
serial illers and maing them more appealing to "atch and analyse
from behind a cinema or television screen. #sychological thrillers
play on the fears of the audience, such as isolation and the breaing
do"n of society, "hich enhances the popularity as the audience can
handle seeing the darer side of the human mind, and "atching their
fears on a screen, rather than facing them in reality. The love of this
genre implies the audience "ant a thrill "hilst vie"ing these media
products, and they see ne" "ays to have fear induced "ithin them.
Character
Research
$ psychological thriller typically has a main character that
is, most of the time, the iller or the person to be feared.
This character is usually isolated, introverted, mentally
damaged and a sadomasochist, due to their bac story or
current situation "ithin the film. The other characters "ithin
the film usually begin strong minded and invincible,
maing them appear as if nothing can harm or affect them,
but over the course of the film, you see their character
become broen do"n and "ea due to the main characters
actions. This also plays on a fear that the audience have,
as society doesnt lie to believe that bad, or dar, things
"ill ever occur "ithin their life, but this sho"s that it can.
My Media Product
Through%out my media product, conventions of society are played "ith, due
to the strong female lead and the "ea male victim. These roles are not
typical, as there is a strong sense of dominance "ithin male roles through%
out different media products, and the female is al"ays the calmer, reserved
character. & believe my media product challenges these conventions, as it
sho"s that physical strength "ithin the male character doesnt al"ays over%
rule the physical, mental or emotional strength of a "oman.
'ue to the main character "ithin my media product (race going through
severe bullying rituals every day at school, her vengeance is fuelled by her
physical, emotional and mental damage, caused by the characters "ho
bully her. The bullies "ithin (race are all male, leaving the female lead
some"hat undermined by the male dominance. This is sho"n through a
course of flashbacs, "here you can see the female leads motives for
revenge.
& believe my media products also develops certain forms and conventions of
psychological thriller products, as typically the main character is male, and
there are very fe" female leads "ithin products glamouri!ing serial illers,
yet my media product has a very strong female lead, pushing the strength
of females to become a norm "ithin media.
