Nicole Tizzard Voice Over

My name is Nicole and I will be discussing the conventions used in music videos. I have
selected five music videos, in which I will use the conventions and discuss them further. My
five videos are:
urn ! "llie #oulding
Neon $ights ! %emi $ovato
&oar ! 'aty (erry
est Thing I Never )ad ! eyonce
*+u,er ass ! Nic-i Mina.
The first convention used in each of these videos is that the artist a,,ears in all five videos.
This is because it would enhance viewers and fans to watch the video, -nowing that the
artist will be a,,earing in the video. +o therefore, the artist is using their own fame and
image to ,romote their song.
/nother convention used in each of these videos is that the song will be the soundtrac- to
the whole video0 it will start and end when the music starts and ends. This is so that the artist
is able to li, sync to the video, ma-ing it entertaining as well as giving an o,tion to ,rovide a
conce,t to the music video.
/nother convention is that the artist will usually li, sync along with the lyrics. This is because
they want to show that it is them singing, which would increase viewers and sales. /lso, this
,rovides an as,ect of realism to the music video, this is so that the audience can feel
connected to the video and feel close to the artist.
/nother convention covered in all five videos is that the artist will ,erform throughout the
video0 this can be dancing, ,laying an instrument or gesturing. This is because they are
trying to ma-e the video lively as without the artist doing some form of ,erformance this
would be very boring to watch. This means that the video is entertaining and not dull.
/ convention commonly used in music videos is that there are usually more than three
different locations, which may change with each verse. This is because this usually matches
the beat and creates a lively atmos, here, as well as ma-ing the video more entertaining.
This would be very boring if the audience were to watch the artist ,erforming in the same
location throughout the whole video.
/nother convention is that the costumes will match the locations and will often change when
they change. This is because this would loo- slightly odd if they were to wear the same
clothes in each location. /s well as this, this can also create an as,ect of realism to the
music video.
/ convention commonly used in music videos is that there will usually be sections of the
video that are filmed in the studio, most often the ,erformance ,art. This could be because
more effects can be added if it has been shot in a studio, for e1am,le using a green screen
to create an abnormal effect behind the artist. /s well as lighting can be mani, ulated also
many different camera angles can be used.

/nother convention commonly used in music videos are that there will usually contain some
-ind of narrative, often intercut with ,erformance shots. The story line of the music video will
usually lin- in with the lyrics of the song this is because this gives the video more of a
meaning and will relate better to the audience as they may have suffered the same
e1,eriences e.g a brea- u,, this can also ma-e the video more interesting and a,,ealing.
Music videos will often contain a range of camera movements to create a dynamic loo- most
often trac-s, cranes and whi, ,ans. This can also create a more e1citing vibe to the video as
the audience are having to fully focus on what is ha,,ening during these camera
movements. Therefore, meaning that the video will not be dull however having a lively
atmos,here.
/nother convention commonly used in music videos is that the video will contain mostly
close u,s for the li, sync, mid2long shots for the ,erformance and e1treme close u,s for
cutaways. 3lose u,s are mainly used so that we are able to see factors such as facial
e1,ressions on the artist, however, long shots are used for the ,erformance ,arts as there
are often bac- u, dancers without this we would not be able to see the ,erformance as
clearly.
/nother convention also used in music videos is that there are usually high angles to create
a vulnerable or se1y loo-, or low angles to create a dominant loo-.
/lso there will be a wide range of different shot ty,es2angles in each location to allow for
dynamic editing.
