1 System Overview
1 System Overview
1.1 General
Tellabs 8600 managed edge system is a managed MPLS access solution aimed at deployment
of mobile transport networks, and Ethernet and IP VPN services as well as broadband service
aggregation for Internet services. The system is especially designed for the service provider
environment with carrier class functionality, simultaneously supporting both connection-oriented
(MPLS) and connectionless (IP) operations. The use of IP/MPLS technology with enhanced quality
of service features enables differentiated services in which the service quality can be predened
for all trafc types and the availability of service can be protected with options built into the
system. The quality of service is guaranteed with DiffServ and DiffServ-aware MPLS trafc
engineering already in the access part of the network. The service speeds are exible ranging from
1 kbps to 1 Gbps. The connectivity services such as intranet, extranet, Internet access and voice
communications are implemented as Ethernet PWE3 or IP VPN according to [RFC2547bis].
The boundary between mobile and wireline services and networks is disappearing. From the cost
point of view it makes sense to use the same network for all services. Tellabs 8600 platform has
a native support for services such as any-to-any IP VPN, Ethernet and ATM, all of which can be
end-to-end provisioned and managed. Additionally the same platform can take care of the Internet
trafc aggregation, which is one of the most rapidly growing business in terms of bandwidth.
1.2 Tellabs 8600 in Managed RAN Transport Application
For the mobile radio access networks (RAN) Tellabs 8600 managed edge system offers the only
future proof transport solution in the market that caters the whole network technology evolution
from TDM to ATM and eventually to an all IP RAN phase. As shown in the gure below the
platform is positioned to cover the whole transport network all the way from the cell sites to the
edge of the mobile core. Throughout all the evolution phases trafc grooming, service quality
and transport can be managed and optimized end-to-end across the same Tellabs 8600 network.
Even though 3G is the primary driver to implement the Tellabs 8600 system, the same platform
thanks to exible MPLS technology and Tellabs 8600 intelligent design can be responsible of
the access aggregation for 2G and 2.5G networks and services. Tellabs 8600 platform offers a
unique opportunity for a mobile operator to broaden the service portfolio and increase revenue by
offering advanced business or residential services, such as managed WiFi access, IP VPNs, business
critical Ethernet or Internet access. Introducing services is extremely fast and cost-effective as
all the service intelligence is in-built to the system. Tellabs 8600 system can be regarded as a
real long term investment as it allows the network convergence already in the access, where the
network investments are the most remarkable.

1 System Overview
Fig. 1 Tellabs 8600 Position in RAN
Tellabs 8600 system is able to cover the whole RAN network from the cell site to the mobile core.
The gure above illustrates the typical roles and locations of the elements in the network, which are
RNC/BSC sites (Tellabs 8660 edge switch)
Access aggregation, i.e. hub sites (Tellabs 8620 access switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch, and
Tellabs 8660 edge switch)
Cell or base station sites (Tellabs 8620 access switch)
MPLS-enabled multitechnology and service support
Tellabs 8600 system can simultaneously take care of mobile trafc aggregation of 2G, 2.5G and
3G trafc even though they are based on various protocols. Flexible equipping and multiservice
interfaces of Tellabs 8600 system enable building the network in the most economical way. Tellabs
8600 system can optimize the bandwidth use in the network even by cross-connecting ATM VP/VC
connections. All the incoming trafc can be mapped to the needed trafc classes before it enters the
MPLS network. Overbooking, which is essential for lower priority and bursty data services, can be
used across the network. Finally, utilizing the MPLS PWE3 tunnelling ATM, TDM, and Ethernet
trafc can be carried through the Tellabs 8600 network. Synchronization can be arranged to cell
sites using various methods from SONET/SDH to packet synchronization.

2.1.1 Baseboard
Tellabs 8620 access switch is a stand alone device and uses a baseboard architecture. This means
that the functionality has been integrated into a single main baseboard. Thus, there are no separate
line cards. Interfaces locate on modules and are front access type.
2.1.2 Interface Module Slots
There are 2 slots, M0 and M1 for interface modules (IFMs). The operator can choose the media type
according to his needs. IFMs are not of hot-insert type.
2.1.3 Cooling
The main cooling method is convection. Fresh air is taken from the left side of the enclosure and
blown through the board and module assembly. Outlet air leaves the enclosure on the right hand
side. Forced cooling is needed to dissipate generated heat load and to maintain components within
their operating limits.
The fan module, located on the left hand side, contains three parallel fans. The baseboard is able to
control and monitor the operation of the fans. Rotation speed is adjusted according to temperature
inside the enclosure, and in case of failure in one fan, the other two will maintain adequate cooling
for a limited time.

20
2 Network Element Overview
The air lter is located in front of the fan modules. It prevents dust from entering the enclosure and
keeps IFMs clean in order to maintain normal convection efciency. An empty IFM slot should be
shielded with a cover plate.
The fan module and air lter can be replaced on the y without disturbing data trafc through the NE.
The rotation speed control of fans is based on temperature values measured from the baseboard. Fan
speed is adjusted by three steps, 0%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the maximum rotation speed. In the
normal temperature range from -5 C to +45 C fans are running continuously. When the measured
value exceeds +67 C the fans speed up to maintain the required operating temperature. This will
happen at room ambient between +35 C and +40 C, depending on equipment furnishing and
installation environment. The warning of high temperature occurs when the measured temperature
exceeds +81 C. This will happen in room ambient between +50 C and +55 C. If the warning
occurs and the equipment is not used in high ambient temperature, it may be advisable to change
the air lter.
The fans are shut down when the measured temperature value from baseboard is +15 C or below.
They are started up again when the temperature reading is raised up to +58 C. This will happen
in ambient -15 C or below. At start-up the fans are running until the equipment is booted up and
able to monitor board temperatures.

2.2 NE Powering
In Tellabs 8620 access switch with AC power feed the AC mains input socket is on the backside
of the enclosure. A separate power module has an isolated AC/DC converter to create supply
voltages needed to operate the NE.
Tellabs 8620 access switch with AC power feed must be connected to a wall socket-outlet
with protective earth contact.
The DC power module consists of one xed DC-DC converter card an two hot-pluggable power
input modules which are front accessible.
AC and DC power feed features are the following:
Over-current protection (fuse)
EMI ltering
Surge protection
Hold-up time provider
Tellabs 8620 access switch must be disconnected from the mains supply before removing the
cover as high voltages are present inside the case.

22
2 Network Element Overview
2.3 NE Synchronization
Tellabs 8620 access switch has an option for common timing generator. It is especially needed when
any SDH interface is in use. The generator locates on a Timing Module and the timing reference
signal is distributed to every IF on a NE via baseboard.
Timing Module provides an SDH equipment clock (SEC) complying with [G.813] Option 1 and
[GR-1244-CORE] Stratum 3 generator. Typically it is synchronized with a clock derived from
any of the following input signals:
n-port STM-n/OC-n IFM
n-port E1/T1 IFM
Station Clock Interface
2-port optical Gigabit Ethernet IFM
It is possible to congure the Station Clock Interface to G.703 2048 kHz synchronization clock
mode, DS1 or E1 framing mode.
The selected reference signal must be originated from an equipment having at least the SEC quality
clock, for example, the reference signal quality must be as dened in [ETS 300 462-3] and [EN 300
462-5-1]. This implies for instance that a 2048 kHz signal, which complies with [G.703] jitter and
wander requirements, cannot necessarily be used as a reference.
Tellabs 8620 access switch can be equipped with one Timing Module. When it has been installed,
the NE has one station clock interface, i.e. one input and one output port.

Tellabs 8620 access switch can optionally be powered with either AC or DC power supply. The
operator is able to choose the needed module type according to his need.
4.1 AC Power Supply Module
4.1.1 Overview
Tellabs 8620 access switch has a separate power supply module with 90 - 264 Vac mains input. It
supplies four output voltages (3.3V,5V,+/-12V) which are stabilized and galvanically isolated from
the mains. The power supply has an active step-up type power factor correction which operates
as pre-regulator for the actual converter. The power supply module has a metallic top cover and
insulating bottom plate.
4.1.2 Interfaces
A mains input connector locates on the backside of the enclosure. There is no mains switch at all.
The power supply input is protected against over-current with fuses. Those are on the primary side.
4.1.3 Operation
The mains voltage is fed through the input lter and fuses to the rectier. The input lter also
includes the inrush current limiter and over voltage protection. The rectied voltage is fed to power
factor correction circuit (PFC), which forms a 400 Vdc voltage for power stage converter (forward
type). The pulse width modulation (PWM) circuit controls the power transistors and it protects the
converter from short circuits.

4 Power Modules
4.2 DC Power Modules
4.2.1 Overview
Tellabs 8620 access switch DC48 has a power supply module and slots for two power input
modules on the front plate. The nominal input voltage is -48 Vdc. The power input modules have
lter and protection circuits and provide battery voltage to the power supply module. The power
supply module has two DC/DC converters, one for 3.3 V output and one for 5 V and 24 V output.
Additionally there are +/-12 V auxiliary output voltages. All outputs are stabilized and galvanically
isolated from the input.
4.2.2 Interfaces
Input connector, ON/OFF-switch and input fuse are located on the frontside of the power input
module. Output voltages 3.3 V, 5 V, +/-12 V and I2C-bus are connected from the power supply
module to the basecard through the backplane board.
4.2.3 Operation
The input voltage is fed through the input lter and fuse to the input capacitors. The power input
module also includes the inrush current limiter for the capacitors and transient over-voltage
protection. Redundancy can be realized by using two power input modules in the enclosure. There
is no active current sharing between the two power input modules. However, the current will be
normally divided rather equally between the two power input modules. One power input module is
able to supply the whole current to the Tellabs 8620 access switch when needed. All outputs of
the power supply module have current limit circuits. The 24 Vdc output is for cooling fans. The
basecard controls fan rotating speed via the I2C-bus and monitors the alarms. Fan driving circuits

5 Timing Module
The optional Timing Module is a Synchronous Equipment Clock (SEC) generator with a station
clock interface. Station clock interface supports E1 G.703 2048 kHz Synchronization Interface or
interface with Synchronization Status Messages. It is equipped on CDC or Tellabs 8620 access
switch.
There are two Timing Module types:
ETSI SEC Timing Module supporting only E1 G.703 2048 kHz Synchronization Interface
ANSI Stratum-3 Timing Module supporting both E1 G.703 2048 kHz Synchronization Interface
and E1 / T1 Synchronization Status Message Interface
The SDH synchronization function is specied in [EN 300 462-5-1] and [G.813]. The functional
modelling is specied in [ETS 300 417-6-1] and [G.781]. STRATUM-3 generator is specied in
[GR-253-CORE] and [GR-1244-CORE].
The module has the following main functional blocks:
Temperature compensated SEC oscillator with PLL and holdover logic
Station clock interface with PLL and Framer
Reference clock selection logic
Clock monitoring logic
The SEC clock is distributed via backplane to each card where an interface module with an
SDH interface is able to use it as TX reference. In opposite direction, the recovered line clock
can be transferred to Timing Module and depending on conguration, SEC is able to use it as a
reference. Monitoring logic takes care that the selected reference clock is valid. It also monitors the
operation of both PLL and other available reference clocks set on the fallback list (contains clock
sources/priority order selected by the user). If all the clock sources fail, SEC will enter into holdover
mode and maintain frequency and phase drift within specied limits.
The station clock input/output interface is on the front plate of Timing Module. Depending on
the user needs, either coaxial or differential cabling can be used with a corresponding connector,
i.e. SMB or D-sub.
