Subject: We are battle weary
Dear friends and prayer partners:
This is one of those times when we feel a need for an extra measure of
your support. As I'm not feehng particularly eloquent tonight, I'll
just make a list of the main things that are weighing on us and hope
that the bare facts speak for themselves.
1) Jim is experiencing the usual pre-board meeting pressure: i.e.
preparing to leave us and the country for a month; preparing for board
meetings with new agenda items arriving regularly via e-mail that
require careful consideration and feedback . He is helping coordinate
the preparations for PBT's first New Testament dedication to take place
immediately after his return to PNG. Not only does this include
logistics for a number of people coming from the States, it involves
making sure the folks in the village do their part. At present that
means clearing an airstrip (by hand) that has been closed for quite some
time due to neglect and preparation for other aspects of the celebration
such as food and music, program, etc. Some of the people involved are
experiencing interpersonal conflict and some suffering firom moral
lapses. This is not helping them work together toward a common goal.
2) A new wave of criminal activity has begun. Last week the vehicle
belonging to one of our translation teams was broken into while it sat
in front of the PBT office. They stole the baby's car seat, of all
things. The house of one of our support teams was burglarized during
the morning while no one was there, with many items stolen. Last night
a family fi'om New Tribes Mission, who are fiving next door to one of our
guest houses, experienced a home invasion much Hke we had last year.
No one was hurt and they were able to chase the burglars away, but the
family is greatly traumatized at the moment. (They've only been in the
country 3 months.) We personally don't feel very threatened as we now
live in Fort Knox, but when it happens to friends, it is still draining

and stressful.
3) Jim mentioned in our last prayer letter about Maikel, the long time
Mend and co-worker of John and Bonita Pryor, who died. Another young
man from this village, Moses, who is also a dear friend of theirs has
been very sick and at times we thought close to death. He is finally
doing a little better, but the medical people at the government hospital
say there is nothing more they can do and are sending him back to his
village. Also, some of you may remember an article in a past newsletter
about Margaret, the woman who works for us here at the house. She is a
Christian and I have seen her grow greatly in her faith since coming to
know her. She has a hard fife. Her husband is an alcoholic and a
gambler. He can't keep a job because he can't stay sober and he is
violent when he's drunk. She complained of a painful breast lump on
Friday and I insisted on taking her to the doctor thinking she had a
boil or an infection under the skin and worried about how sick she would
be on Monday if she didn't get started on antibiotics. I came away from
the Dr's office in shock. He is convinced it is a tumor (cancer) and
has set up a consultation with a surgeon on Wednesday to see about
having it removed. There's no way to have a biopsy done in this
country, so he is recommending having it removed immediately. Needless
to say, she is frightened as well as in pain.
A number of our teams (both support and translation) are feefing wrung
out and stressed. Many beheve it has to do with the spiritual battle
connected with the completion of the New Testament in the Kire language
and our efforts to get it into the hands of the people, as well as our
efforts to see God's Word in the hands and hearts of the other language
groups with whom we work. Just as Hur and Aaron held up Moses' hands in
the battle against the Amalekites, we're asking that you do the same for
all of us here through your prayers.
Godbless you for your faithfulness and protect you and your families as
you pray for us.
Love to you all, Cindy (for Jim, Michael, David, & Keren)
