Our School
Name: IES Xelmirez I
Type of school: Public Secondary School (IES)
Number of students: 1000 students approx.
Number of teachers: 90 teachers approx.
In 1984 the building of the IES Arzebispo Xelmrez
I moved to the current location, just in the very
centre of Campus Vitae of the University of
Santiago.
It is placed in a privileged green area, very close
to the historical centre and the business district of
Santiago. It has a wide variety of facilities and
public services which can be used both by teachers
and students.
Founded in 1845, IES Xelmrez I was the only Secondary School
in Santiago for over a century, so it is the oldest secondary school
in Santiago and the second oldest in Galicia.
It takes its name after the first Archbishop of Santiago de
Compostela, Diego Xelmrez. (1070-1140).
Many distinguished Galician characters from the literary,
cultural and political world, such as Valle-Incln, Castelao,
Granell, Murgua, Pondal, Montero Ros..., studied in this school.
Throughout its history, our school has been located in many
different places in Santiago.
Two of the most notorious ones were set where the University
Rectorate and the Autonomous Galician Government are
located nowadays.
