WELCOME TO SPAIN!

GUTIEREZ:

Good morning, my name is Valery Gutiérrez and she is my partner Mari Ángel Calderón, today we
have the pleasure of being your tour guides

CALDERON:

In this tour of Spain we will see from Spanish history to a wonderful presentation of the typical
dance of Spain, flamenco.

GUTIEREZ:

Without further ado, let's begin by enriching ourselves with a bit of Spanish history

CALDERON:

Spain has been the scene of a varied and rich history. The first modern humans settled in its
territory more than 35,000 years ago.

GUTIERREZ

The Roman conquest began in 218 BC. C. and began a profound process of cultural assimilation
whose repercussions we continue to feel today. After the fall of the Western Empire, the territory
of Hispania was conquered by Germanic tribes (Visigoths, Sueves and Vandals) and later by the
Arabs.

CALDERON

The Muslim presence in the peninsula extended until 1492 with the fall of the Nasrid kingdom of
Granada. The marriage of the Catholic Monarchs led to the dynastic union between the territories
of the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Aragon.

GUTIEREZ

Spain, after the discovery and conquest of America, became the main European power and formed
a great empire that spread over four continents. The Spanish presence in America forged strong
ties between both shores of the Atlantic, making Spanish the common language of more than 500
million people.

CALDERON

Knowing all this, we also see it necessary to know a little about the geography of this beautiful
country, through the hand of our teacher Valentina Cervantes

CERVANTES

Good morning, today's class will focus on the geography of Spain, Spain is a country on the Iberian
Peninsula of Europe, it includes 17 autonomous regions

Spain is located in southwestern Europe and borders France (to the north) and Portugal (to the
west). Most of its territory is a peninsula, but it has two large archipelagos. Off the coast of
Catalonia and the Valencian Community, in the Mediterranean Sea, are the Balearic Islands. The
Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, at a distance of about 1,500 kilometers from the
coast of Andalusia, in the south of the peninsula. Spain also has two autonomous cities: Ceuta and
Melilla. They are located in the north of the African continent and are perfectly connected by
ferries with the Andalusian coast.

GUTIEREZ

Finished the geography class, the patriotic symbols of Spain want to show off

IVAN

This here is the Spanish flag, there are several theories about the meaning of the colors of the
Spanish flag, but the most popular is the one that says that red represents the blood shed by the
Spanish during their conquests and in defense of the homeland , while yellow represents the
riches obtained in their conquests.

SOFIA

Each part of the shield has a meaning referring to Spanish history. The crown that is part of the
Spanish flag, popularly known as "the stamp", symbolizes the Spanish monarchy. The columns on
each side with the motto "Plus Ultra" means "More Beyond" in Spanish and represent the columns
of Hercules. At the top of each column is a crown that represents the historical past of the Holy
Empire and kingdom of the country. In the central part of the shield you can see an image of the
barracks that symbolize the medieval kingdoms of Spain. The castle is the first barracks and
symbolizes the kingdom of Castile. The crowned rampant lion represents the kingdom of León, and
the bars of Aragón represent the crown of the province of Aragón.

Finally, the chains represent the kingdom of Navarre, the pomegranate the kingdom of Granada,
the three fleurs-de-lis in the center of the shield symbolize the arms of the branch of the Spanish
dynasty, and the Anjou of the House of Bourbon, the branch Spain of the House of Bourbon
started with the reign of Felipe V in 1700.

CALDERON

Let's not forget the currency, which as a curious fact before the euro was the passenta

SELCHEA:

You are right, on October 19, 1868 a Government Decree established the peseta as the basic unit
of the Spanish monetary system, its history accompanied the Spanish for more than 130 years.

On January 1, 2002, euro banknotes and coins entered circulation, coexisting with pesetas until
February 28, at which time the euro became the only legal tender.

In order to facilitate the substitution of pesetas, a period was established for citizens to exchange
their pesetas for euros: until June 30, 2002 , the exchange could be carried out at the Bank of
Spain

GUTIERREZ
And from the hand of our chefs we have these exquisite meals

GOMEZ AND ARJONA

(they talk about food and its preparation)

CALDERON

Now we present Miguel Guevara who wants to tell us a little about the official language of Spain

GUEVARRA

Good morning, now I will briefly explain the language used in Spain. Several vernacular languages
are spoken in Spain. Castilian or Spanish, the official language throughout the country, is the
predominant mother tongue in almost all the autonomous communities of Spain and is spoken by
98.9% of the Spanish population. Six of the nineteen cities and autonomous communities of Spain
also have, along with Spanish, other official languages in their respective communities.
Bilingualism in different degrees and in different communicative situations between Spanish and
another language is a common practice by many of the Spaniards who reside in one of these
autonomous communities.

GUTIEREZ

Leaving the language aside, we present the main sport in Spain

JOHN

Soccer, as we could imagine, is the most practiced sport in Spain. According to the 2019 Sports
Statistics Yearbook published by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the king of sports has
1,063,090 federative licenses in our country, which represents an increase of 3.4% compared to
the 1,027,907 of the previous year.

Men hold 90% of the chips, while women account for 10%. More and more women in Spain
practice football, but this phenomenon is still not reflected in the licenses, since it is difficult for
them to take the step of competing.

For this reason, the difference in licenses between men and women remains abysmal. In any case,
football is the national sport and the matches of the First Division of the Spanish League, the
highest category of Spanish football, bring together millions of people in the stadiums and in front
of the television every day.

CALDERON

Now our father par excellence will tell us a little about religions in Spain

CALED

Practically 98% of Spaniards are Catholic, although not all of them actively participate in the rites
of the religion. The remaining 2% is divided between the Jewish and Islamic religions that still
persist in Spanish lands.
During the Middle Ages, Christianity, Judaism and Islam coexisted as religious options without
distinction, but since the time of the Catholic Monarchs and the Inquisition, Christianity became
the official religion of the Spanish. The liberal constitutions of the 19th century established
religious freedom, but during the conservative periods, the Catholic religion became the official
state religion.

School instruction is a clear example of this. Religious education is a subject in schools and,
together with the subject of ethical values, is averaged at the end of the course and is taken into
account in the numerical weighting to request aid and scholarships.

Respect for all religions and freedom of worship in Spain is widespread, although the influence of
the Catholic Church is still very important.

CALDERON

Oh! What a surprise it seems that the time has come to listen to the interview with Sara Baras,
flamenco dancer

NATALIE

Good morning everyone, today I am with Sara Baras, Spanish dancer and choreographer, who has
given us a little of her time to get to know her better.

LARA:

It is a pleasure to be with you today

NATALIE

First of all, I would like to know how did you start in the world of dance?

LARA

I was eight years old when my family moved to nearby San Fernando, the hometown of my
mother, who opened a dance school there and made me the most sought-after student. It wasn't
long before he was part of Los Niños de la Tertulia Flamenca, a group with which he toured all the
flamenco festivals in Andalusia and even danced before Queen Sofía.

NATALIE

I understand that debut was at the Alameda theater

LARA

Yes, I acted right away with the greats like Camarón de la Isla, Tomatito, Manuela Carrasco,
Pansequito

NATALIE

Tell me about your company, what are you looking for with it?
LARA

Shadows, offers us a journey through time, colors, silence and bustle, the crowd and loneliness,
light and shadows.

NATALIE

I understand, I would like to talk a little more but it seems that the public wants to see you dance

LARA

It would be a pleasure
