French Poodles Toy Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"DAWN" SOCK & SWEATER YARN
2 ozs. Lt. Gray will make 1 Large Poodle
1 oz. will make 2 Small Poodles
and
"STAR" SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY COTTON, Article 50.

Steel crochet hook No. 6
125 inch length of heavy Wire
118 inch length of heavy Wire
210 inch lengths of heavy Wire
Gray crepe paper for large Poodle
3 pipe cleaners for small Poodle
2 yds. of fine Wire
LARGE POODLEBend heavy wire as illustrated belowfigures 1-2-3-4-5 and twist fine wire tightly where top of legs and body
meet illustration No. 6.
Cut Gray crepe paper in one inch bias strips. Wrap around each leg until they are one inch in circumference. Wrap head, then neck
until it is 2 inches in circumference and body until it is 3 inches in circumference.
FEETWith Black "Star" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton ch 2, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join or turn this or following rounds.
Place a marker at beginning of each round.
Next 4 Rounds1 s c in each s c, join last round, cut thread leaving a length for sewing. Place a foot on each leg and sew to leg.
NOSE AND HEAD SECTIONSWith Black ch 4, d c in 4th st from hook, 8 d c in same space, join but do not turn.
2nd RoundCh 3, 1 d c in each of the next 9 sts, join, cut thread.
3rd RoundAttach Gray, ch 3, 1 d c in each st, join.
4th RoundCh 3, d c in next d c, * 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, repeat from * all around, join.
Next 2 RoundsWorking in d c, increase 7 sts evenly spaced, ch 3 at end of last round and turn.
Next 3 Rows1 d c in each st, ch 3 to turn all rows, cut yarn leaving a length. If necessary place a little cotton in nose. Place
section on head having opening at neck edge. Sew last row together.
With Gray wind entire body tightly, keeping yarn very close together and leaving about inch of each foot free.
SMALL POMPONS FOR HEADWind Gray over a 1 inch cardboard 100 times, tie one end using 3 strands of yarn, cut opposite
end and comb (all pompons are worked in same manner). Work 2 more pompons in same manner. Place one on each side of head
and sew in position through crepe paper, tie ends together.
EARSWind Gray over an 8 inch cardboard 18 times, cut both ends and tie one end. Divide in 3 sections and braid loosely. Tie
other end, trim and comb ends. Place on top of head and sew at center.
LARGE POMPON FOR HEAD
Wind Gray 180 times over a 1 inch cardboard. Sew to top of head on top of braided ears. Sew remaining small pompons at
back of neck below large pompons.
POMPONS FOR LOWER END OF NECK AND FRONT LEGS Wind Gray 150 times over a 1 inch cardboard. Make 3 more
pompons in same manner. Make 2 more pompons (100 times over a one inch cardboard). Tie one large pompon where neck joins
body and another on front of neck. Tie a small pompon on each side between these, a little lower down. Tie a large pompon where
each leg joins body section. Make 4 pompons (60 times over a ? inch cardboard). Tie 2 on each leg about I inch from foot.
Make 3 pompons (150 times over a 1 inch cardboard). Tie one on each hind leg where leg meets body and tie one on body for
tail. Make 4 pompons (60 times over ? inch cardboard). Tie 2 on each leg about 1 inch from foot. Trim and shape poodle as
illustrated. With Black embroider eyes as illustrated. Tie with bows if desired.
SMALL POODLEJoin 2 pipe cleaners together and bend as illustrated, figure No. 7. Bend another pipe cleaner figure No. 8.
Twist fine wire tightly where top of legs and body meet figure No. 9.
With Gray wind entire body very tightly. Starting at top of leg and working downward to about 1/16 inch from end, then wind
upward. Wind Gray 9 times over center part of body and 5 times over neck. Wind enough Gray over head to cover entire section.
With Black "Star" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton, embroider nose and eyes in Satin Stitch.
SMALL POMPONS FOR HEADWind Gray 40 times over a ? inch cardboard. Sew to one side of head. Work 2 more pompons in
same manner. Sew one on opposite side of head and the other at back of head.
EARSCut 6 strands of yarn 6 inches long. Divide in 3 sec-tions and braid loosely. Tie each end, trim and comb ends. Place on
top of head and sew at center.
LARGE POMPON FOR HEADWind Gray 80 times over a inch cardboard. Sew to top of head on top of braided ears.
POMPONS FOR FRONT LEGSWind Gray 40 times over a ? inch cardboard. Tie Pompon to top of leg where leg meets body.
Make 3 more pompons in same manner. Tie one to other leg and tie remaining pompons to top of body at lower end of neck at
joinings.
HIND LEGSWind Gray 40 times over a ? inch cardboard. Tie to top of legs where leg meets body. Make one more pompon in
same manner. Sew to top of opposite leg.
TAILWind Gray 80 times over a inch cardboard. Tie to body.
POMPONS FOR LOWER PART OF LEGSWind Gray 20 times over a inch cardboard. Tie to front of leg about inch from
end. Make another pompon in same manner, tie in back of leg. Finish other legs in same manner. Trim and shape poodle as
illustrated. Tie with bows if desired.
