The talk was packed with anecdotes, as lively as her journeys were colour- ful, and delivered in a beau- tifully clear Welsh that the many learners were able understand very well. At the age of 12 her family moved to Guyana, but was driven away after a short time by an epidemic of ty- phoid. Heledds first trip alone was to a Kibbutz in Is- rael where she worked pick- ing, among other things, avocados. The next visit she told us about was to China. With an excellent ear for languages, she was able to communi- cate the nuances of pronun- ciation of Mandarin. She clearly has another gift be- ing able to make (and meet) friends in foreign places. While sailing down the river she caught sight of an old school mate on the bank and this was only one of several coincidences dur- ing her time there teaching English as a foreign lan- guage. Heledd regularly visits Burkina Faso in West Af- rica and with Criw Coda Ni is fundraising for Christian Aid to help improve the liv- ing situation there. Codi Ni raises funds for projects, such as well building, which Heledd feels privileged to see the results of. More recently, on honey- moon, she went with her husband, Rhys, to Machu Picchu, wept at the sight of it and then later, on visiting the Amazon river, spotted a leopard in a nature reserve that no-one had seen before. Heledd was given the hon- our of naming him/her Arancaya a composite of Welsh and Spanish connec- tions. The evening was such a delight that many present would surely like be a fly on the wall wherever she goes next. Visit the website for information on forthcoming Castle talks. Golf day ONCE again, Cadwgans Charity Golf Day in aid of the Cardigan Castle restora- tion project has been a great success, raising thousands of pounds. Visit the website (www.cardigancastle.com) to see picture of the day, as well as information on the winning teams. The teams enjoyed the fan- tastic surroundings of Car- digan Golf Club in Gwbert and its beautiful views out to the sea. The teams played alongside rugby legends Robert Jones and Brynmor Williams, representing the Thomas Carroll group, who also donated a golf voucher to the evenings auction. The auction, which fol- lowed the round of golf, was great fun, with competing bids for the many popular items. The evening then came to an end following an entertaining sing-along where everyone joined in. Dylan Thomas was the days main sponsor, and Cadwgan staff are very grateful for their support. We would like to thank eve- ryone who was involved in making the day a success the numerous sponsors, the teams, the golf club staff and the volunteers who helped both with the plan- ning and on the day itself.
