Purple Line Meeting Comments May 2014 | Page 1
Purple Line Public Meetings | May 2014
There were 45 public attendees.
Summary of Presentation Questions
During a presentation given toward the beginning of each meeting, attendees were given remote
response cards. Using these, attendees were able to answer questions that were asked during the
presentation, and an immediate summary of their responses was shown to the entire group. Below is a
summary of the responses for all three meetings combined. Of the 45 people who attended:
64% had been to an Indy Connect meeting before
66% drive to work, 16% bike to work; only 3% take transit to work
45% use IndyGo at least once a month, 44% do not use public transit in Indianapolis
More frequent service, new routes within Marion County and more crosstown routes were
ranked highest as changes that would make it easier for attendees to use IndyGo.
88% had heard about the new Downtown Transit Center (Opening Fall 2015).
28% live near the Purple Line alternatives, 45% visit places in the study area (healthcare,
recreation, museums, etc.)
65% of people indicated that they would prefer that the Purple Line have direct access to
Downtown Indianapolis.
74% said they do not mind transferring between lines, as long as the delay isnt too long
Work, shopping/dining, and parks/museums/etc. were tied for the destinations where people
most want to go.
65% of people agreed that station spacing should be a compromise between access and
distances appropriate for increased travel speed.
At each of the three meetings, the majority responses were similar. Responses that varied include:
The western meeting attendees indicated a desire for more crosstown routes and routes
outside of Marion County
Attendees at the central meeting had the highest number and percentage of people who live
near the Purple Line study area
Attendees of the central and western meetings desired direct service to Downtown. Attendees
of the eastern meeting were split on desiring direct downtown service or crosstown service.

Public Mapping
Attendees were asked to put sticky dots on a board to indicate where they live and where they go
(work, play, shop, etc.). 41 people added yellow dots to indicate where they live, and 86 green dots
were added to indicate where people go (people were allowed to place more than one green dot).
Patterns in the map indicate that:
Most of the meeting attendees live in the middle or eastern half of Marion County. Most of the
attendees live within 1/2 mile of the corridors being studied, but some were from up to three
miles north.
The green dots were placed mostly along 38
th
Street, along Meridian Street, or in Downtown
Indianapolis or central Lawrence. A few were placed in the Castleton area. This indicates a
strong preference from among the meeting attendees to reach destinations along 38
th
Street as
well as within downtown Indianapolis and jobs in Lawrence.
These results will be factored into the evaluation of the Purple Lines routing alternatives.

I like the Route 39 L route down Meridian, across 1/2 38
th
Street is preferable because
transfers will be less frequent Im concerned about security waiting for transit at stations or
stops. Station could be empty or nearly so. (Pauline Spiegel)
Bus service to Butler University. (Gloria Eley with IDEM)
How will you get choice riders?

Conversations
In general, comments were split on cross-town v. downtown preferences for service.
Preference for using Post Road to reach the Financial Center
Complaint that there are no Pendleton Pike routes right now
Complaint that the current bus should pick up at the opposite side of the Financial Center
Interest in establishing a westside north-south corridor, connecting to the Purple Line.
Questions about payment assurance how do you keep people from riding without paying if the
stations arent enclosed/secured?
Councilor McHenry attended. She inquired about IndyGo shelter service in western Indianapolis
and provided addresses for areas that could use a concrete pad or similar waiting area surface.
