Lower Marsh Market
Fishtail or Snorkel Hood?
Today, I was at Waterloo Station and it was
snowing heavily. Horribly cold. I felt like an Italian
immigrant with cardboard shoes and paperclothes.
Some action was necessary, I didn't want to end up
like Roald Amundsen in South Pole (especially
being at South Bank).

I knew what I needed. A parka was my solution.
But then, the big question was: a fishtailed one?
Or maybe the snorkel version? Incredibly
challenging cultural and symbolical decision to be
taken (amidst a snow storm).
Finally, with my last drops of energy I messaged
Crispin (my trusted reference when in London). He
wrote me back: "Go at Trussons', Lower Marsh,
behind Waterloo St".

London - East End
At Home
Well, I guess that to be invited at home by Gilbert
and George, that would be a very nice thing. But,
at the same time, I wouldn't know what to say (I
guess).
There I went. A very nice shop. They had only one
parka, and my decision was (hencefore) quite
easy

Alessandro Scandurra: the one I've bought, it is a
different one. It has the tail, but just a bit. Not as
big as the one in the image... (ok to look funny
and nerdy, but there is a limit...).
And, more important, it has a majestic snorkel
hood...

We made a big point not to become friends of
anybody," says Gilbert, when I ask if they have
befriended neighbours like Tracey Emin and the
Chapman brothers. Why? "It's purer." Entirely
without friends? "Almost entirely," says George.
Their friendlessness, incidentally, is of a piece
with their kitchenlessness. "We used to have a
stove, but it was taken away." Why? "Because it
wastes so much time, shopping and washing up,
disposing of waste. We keep our brains for the
more important things. We only have an electric
kettle.
Nowadays, Gilbert and George are feted elder
statesmen of the British art world, strolling their
manor in distinctive tweed suits. "We are still
here in the East End of London, but we are
universal." Why do they dress so smartly? "We used
to say because we never wanted to be the artists
their mothers would be ashamed of, but it didn't
work out quite like that."
Are their mothers ashamed of them? "No, they're
very proud." says George, quickly. "We don't
alienate anyone. The suits are very good because
they are odd. We always get a table at a
restaurant anywhere in the world. We're never
searched at airports. Even boys on bicycles with
crazy dyed hair will screech to a halt and say,
"Great suits, guys!' They enable us to get away
with a lot."
Thanks to Alessandro Scandurra for the image!

Then of course, one of the nicest things when you
go to see an exhibition at Barbican, it is the

Kyur8
Some days ago, Alessandro Mininno gave me the
link for this interesting phone app: Kyur8.
It allows you to transform your images into
webzines. Even in its early stage, it is quite
impressive on what you can do.

The Lewis Chessmen
The Lewis Chessmen (or Uig Chessmen, named
after the bay where they were found) are a group
of 78 12th-century chess pieces, most of which are
carved in walrus ivory.
Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the
Outer Hebrides, Scotland, they may constitute
some of the few complete, surviving medieval
chess sets, although it is not clear if a set as
originally made can be assembled from the pieces.
They are owned and exhibited by the British
Museum in London, which has 67 of the original
pieces, and the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh,
which has the remaining 11 pieces.

Cradle to Grave
Cradle to Grave explores our approach to health in
Britain today. The piece incorporates a lifetime
supply of prescribed drugs knitted into two lengths
of fabric, illustrating the medical stories of one
woman and one man.
Each length contains over 14,000 drugs, the
estimated average prescribed to every person in
Britain in their lifetime. This does not include pills
we might buy over the counter, which would
require about 40,000 pills each.
