Summary of Personality Disorders
Personality disorders, formerly known as character disorders, are characteried to two general
feat!res" chronic interpersonal diffic!lties and pro#lems with one$s identity or sense of self. Personality
disorders stem largely from the grad!al de%elopment of infle&i#le and distorted personality and
#eha%ioral patterns which res!lt in persistently maladapti%e ways of percei%ing, thinking a#o!t, and
relating to the world.
'n (SM)'*)+,, the personality disorders are coded on a separate a&is. +hese are separately
classified !nder A&is ' along with psychiatric syndromes and A&is '' along with mental retardation
which are regarded differently. (SM)'*)+, defined personality disorders #ased on fi%e criteria"
Criterion A, B, C, (, and -. +hese diagnostic criteria essentially feat!re a personality disorder as an
end!ring pattern of inner e&perience and #eha%ior that de%iates markedly from the e&pectations of the
indi%id!al$s c!lt!re. +he pattern classified in Criterion A m!st #e manifested in at least two of the
following areas" cognition, affecti%ity, interpersonal f!nctioning, or imp!lse control while pattern in
Criterion B m!st #e end!ring and #e infle&i#le and passi%e across a #road range of personal and social
sit!ations. Pattern leading to clinically significant distress or impairment in f!nctioning falls !nder
Criterion C. .n Criterion (, the pattern is sta#le and of long d!ration, and its onset can #e traced #ack
at least to adolescence or early ad!lthood. /aslty, on Criterion -, the pattern is not #etter acco!nted for
as manifestation or conse0!ence of another mental disorder.
Many people meet the criteria for more than one personality disorder which also incl!des those
from different cl!sters. +here are three cl!sters of personality disorders which are gro!ped #ased on the
similarities among the disorders 1(SM)'*)+,2. Cl!ster A incl!des paranoid, schioid, and schiotypal
personality disorders, Cl!ster B incl!des histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and #orderline personality,
while Cl!ster C incl!des a%oidant, dependent, and o#sessi%e comp!lsi%e personality disorders.

Antisocial
People with this disorder lack moral or ethical de%elopment. +hey are !na#le to follow appro%ed
models of #eha%ior. .ther characteristics of people with this disorder are #eing deceitf!l and shameless
in manip!lating others. Antisocial personality disorder is more common in males than in females.

Borderline
'mp!lsi%eness, inappropriate anger, drastic mood shifts, chronic feelings of #oredom, and attempts of
s!icide are se%eral characteristics of people with #orderline personality disorder. +his disorder is more
