WORKING WITH THE READER
Summary:

The story is about the changing relationships between the two American children and an Aboriginal boy as they make their way
through the Australian desert.

Chapter 2: The next day, as the children are gathering food, they discover that a sixteen-year-old Aboriginal boy is watching
them. Mary is afraid of the black boy because of her South Carolina upbringing and because the boy is naked. However, Peter
soon becomes friends with him when he starts sneezing and the bush boy copies the sounds he makes. Talking with their
hands, the children ask the boy to take them to a place where there is food and water.

FIRST SESSION (SEE SYLLABUS) - Discussion:

Recycle what students read on chapter 1. How much do they remember?

Chapter 1: Two American children, Mary and Peter go to visit their uncle, Keith, in Adelaide. On their way they get lost in the
Australian outback after a plane crash.
They dont know where to go and how to find food in the desert. At night, strange animals are interested in them but dont attack
them. On the following day, they climb a mountain and Mary, the elder child, realises they are far away from the sea.
Write the following phrase on the board: At home in Charleston, South Carolina, no black person came near white
people. (It is son page 12-lines 1 and 2).
Students work in small groups. Ask them : What does it mean?
Elicit ideas.
Tell them that, years ago, in South Carolina and in many other places, no black person came near white people. They were
treated in a different way.
Ask them to discuss in their groups about this policy. Have they heard or read about it? Do they know the meaning of
Apharteid?
After some minutes of discussion, elicit answers.

Now, tell your students that the bush boy feels Peters clothes. Why do people of different places wear different clothes?
Students discuss in groups. Elicit answers.
Pinpoint that Peter talks to the bush boy with gestures.
Ask students to keep working in their groups. One plays the role of Peter and ask his/her partners for different things using
mimicry. Can the others guess?
You can demonstrate the activity before they start.

SECOND SESSION (SEE SYLLABUS)

Write and group work:

Divide students into three groups.
Group 1 will write Marys thoughts about the bush boy.
Group 2 will write Peters thoughts about the bush boy.
Group 3 will write the bush boys thoughts about Mary and Peter.
Once they finish, have students read their characters thoughts aloud.
Ask students to predict what will happen: What will happen to the children? Elicit ideas but dont confirm any answer.
Finally, ask students how much they remember about chapters 1 and 2. You can use the following examples:
- Whose legs hurt? Why? (Peters legs. They were bitten by insects)
- What happened to the animals in the dark? (They began to move)
- Was Mary a good sister? (yes, she loved Peter very much)
- Did they find food? (yes, they found a tree with round balls of fruit on it)
- Was the bushboy wearing clothes? (No, he was naked).
By the year 1950 the United States of America was divided between black and white. Schools,
restaurants, trains and buseseven drinking fountains cannot be shared by both races.
Apartheid: social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by white
minority governments in South Africa from 1948 to 1994.
If time available teacher can work with the extra-activities at the back of the book.
