- identify key elements in read text about things around the house that dont

MATERIALS: textbook, exercise from student activity book, cassette, cassette recorder,
model text, pictures of things around the house
ORGANISATION: frontal, pair work, individual
Lesson development
SPEAKING AND WRITING ACTIVITY: Lets remember the use of DO or MAKE in
sentences. Remember that we use DO for housework and MAKE for food or drink.
Practice: Pupils are given the following exercise to solve by filling with the correct verb:
do or make.

They can work in pairs to get the correct answers:

SPEAKING ACTIVITY: Situation: my baby niece started to talk and now she wants to
know everything about the household items that she sees. Answer her questions about
each of the following. The teacher shows pictures with the respective household items
and gives the pupils a model.
Ex: a coffee machine
What is this?

Its a coffee machine.


What is it for?
Its for making coffee.
Pupils do the same, in pairs, for the following: a washing machine, a kettle, a vacuum
cleaner, a juice extractor.
PRE LISTENING ACTIVITY: Listen to Kate and Liz trying to solve a puzzle. Say which
household items they mention ( they all end in er).
LISTENING ACTIVITY: The pupils listen to the tape in order to find the correct
answers. If necessary, the teacher will play the cassette for two times.
POST LISTENING ACTIVITY: The pupils give the correct answers:
- freezer
- vacuum cleaner
- dishwasher
Listen again and say for what these objects are used:
- freezer- keep food fresh
- vacuum cleaner- clean carpets
- dishwasher- washing up
SPEAKING ACTIVITY: Pupils are encouraged to answer the following questions about
other household items:

Correct answers: A washing machine is used for washing the clothes.
A hairdryer is used for drying your hair.
A camera is used for taking pictures.
An iron is used for ironing clothes.
A walkman is used for listening to music.
PRE LISTENING ACTIVITY: Sometimes the things that we buy have different
problems. You will hear a man complaining about something. Listen and find the answers
to the following questions:
a. What did he buy?
b. When did he buy it?
c. What is the problem?
d. Is it still under guarantee?
LISTENING ACTIVITY: Pupils listen to the tape and try to find all the correct answers.
If necessary, the teacher plays the cassette two or three times.

POST LISTENING ACTIVITY: Pupils give the correct answers to the questions asked at
the beginning:
a. He bought a TV.
b. He bought it three weeks ago.
c. It makes a funny noise and he cant hear anything.
d. Yes, it is.
PRE READING ACTIVITY: The people in the following dialogues bought different
objects and now something is wrong. Read the texts and find out what objects they
bought and what the problem is.
READING ACTIVITY: The pupils read the text (roles) and find the correct answers and
complete the table
DIALOGUE 1:
ANNA: Im very upset.
JEN: Why? Whats the matter?
ANNA: I bought a washing machine two weeks ago.
JEN: And?
ANNA: Well, its leaking and I had a lot of water in my bathroom yesterday.
JEN: What is the guarantee for it?
ANNA: It has a year guarantee.
JEN: In this case you should go to the store from where you bought it and solve the
situation.
ANNA: Will you come with me?
JEN: Yes, of course. Lets go now.
DIALOGUE 2:
TOM: Hi, Mark! How are you?
MARK: Im not so good.
TOM: Why? Whats the matter?
MARK: I bought a new calculator for my Math classes yesterday.
TOM: And?
MARK: It doesnt work. All the numbers on the screen are foggy.
TOM: Is it under guarantee?
MARK: Yes, it is. It has got a 2 months guarantee. Will you come with me to the library
to solve this problem?
TOM: Of course. Lets go.
