SESSION 6 EDUCATION SYSTEM
TOPIC EDUCATION SYSTEM IN SOUTH KOREA
The South Korean educational system is divided into three levels: six years of primary
school, followed by three years of middle school and then three years of high school.
Kindergarten is optional in South Korea and most parents prefer to keep their little ones at home
as long as possible. Korean kindergartens are expected to start teaching basic math, reading and
writing to children, including education on how to count, add, subtract, read and write in Korean,
Primary school consists of grades one to six (age 8 to age 13 in Korean years). The
primary curriculum consists of nine principal subjects: moral education, English, Korean, social
studies, mathematics, science, physical education, music and arts, usually all presented by a
single teacher. Some parents send their children to private schools after hours, where English
may be better taught. In Korea, most of the primary teachers are working for public primary
schools.
Upon completion of primary school, students advance to middle school, which comprises
grades seven through nine. Most students enter at age 12 or 13 and graduate at age 15 or 16. The
transition to 3 years of middle school can be difficult because studies are taken far more
seriously. While elementary school instructors teach all subjects, in middle school, students have
different teachers for each subject.
The final 3 years of school education take place at high schools. High schools in Korea
teach students for three years, from first grade (age 15-17) to third grade (age 17-19), and
students commonly graduate at age 18 or 19. It is a commonly known saying in South Korea that
'If you sleep three hours a night, you may get into a top 'SKY university;' If you sleep four hours
each night, you may get into another university; if you sleep five or more hours each night,
especially in your last year of high school, forget about getting into any university.'
Accordingly, many high school students in their final year do not have any free time for
holidays, birthdays or vacations. Many high school students seem to prefer staying with friends
and studying, rather than taking a break. Thats why South Korean education is best in world.
