AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 Essentials: Autodesk

Official Training Guide

Description

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 Essentials is intended for first-time users of Civil 3D to learn basic skills and
become productive at an entry level. It contains explanations of the use of fundamental Civil 3D
functions and how they relate to the completion of land development projects. Although the book is at a
basic level, it still presents a considerable volume of new concepts and information for the students.
For this reason, there are many sidebars and notes throughout the book that explain the reasons why
things are done and how they relate to the real world. Instructors are encouraged to include this
information in their lectures to provide some framework for the students to better understand the
concepts they are presented with. AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 Essentials is also a great resource to aid in
preparing for the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 Certified Associate exam.
The book begins with two indtroductory chapters. Chapter 1 is a tour of the user interface which will
enable the student to become familiar with the environment they will be learning in and ultimately
working in. This chapter is extremely important as it will give them the tools to operate the software
with ease and efficiency and to avoid distraction while learning the more difficult concepts in later
chapters. Chapter 2 is a demonstration and discussion of the importance of Civil 3Ds dynamic
environment. Again, this is a very important chapter because it emphasizes the importance of using
Civil 3D as a modeling and design tool, rather than a drafting tool. One of the primary goals of this
book is to produce Civil 3D users that strive to get the most out of the product; Chapter 2 lays the
foundation for ensuring that this happens.
The remaining chapters (3-18) lead the student throught the completion of a small residential land
development project. As the students progress through the design, they are presented with
explanations and discussions of the key Civil 3D features that are required for each part of the design.
The students are also given the opportunity to utilize those functions for themselves in the form of
hands-on exercises. At the end of each chapter is a section entitled The Essentials and Beyond
which provides an additional exercise that gives students yet another opportunity to practice what they
have learned, and in many cases, apply it at a higher level.
The aligning of Civil 3D features with the completion of a project is 100% intentional. To new students
of Civil 3D, the functions of the software and the tasks that are performed with it are extremely foreign.
By encouraging students to relate what theyre doing in the software to things theyve seen in the field
or learned in other classes, the understanding and retention of this material will be increased tenfold.

Class Information

Suggested Duration 3 days
Objective To provide new AutoCAD Civil 3D users an understanding of the
softwares core functionality and features so that they can create,
edit, document, and present their first model. Users will have a
solid grounding in the software so that they can immediately be
productive using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Who Should Attend New AutoCAD Civil 3D users or other Autodesk software users
who want to learn the core features and functionality of AutoCAD
Civil 3D.

This course is designed to present a basic overview of Civil 3D for those unfamiliar with the software.
After completing the class successfully, students will posess the knowledge, skills, and understanding
of key concepts needed to be productive with Civil 3D at an entry level.
