MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS | HUDSON SALARY GUIDE 2012 1 UK
INTRODUCTION
The guide will show you how salaries have uctuated across the marketing and communications profession
with market overviews and salary information for each industry sector. The salary data has been researched
thoroughly by our consultants, and is based on candidates disclosure of salaries, advertised salaries and job
offers by clients. They also take into account current market conditions and forecasts.
As we work with hundreds of businesses across the UK, we are able to forecast how remuneration packages
for professionals in the sector will look in the coming months. It is important to note that salaries are
inuenced by company size, location, sector, hiring prole and benets packages this is in addition to
qualications, skills, experience and job remit. We havent been able to accommodate all of these variables in
the gures presented, therefore please use this publication as a guide to current salaries only.
If youd like to speak to us about what youve read in this booklet or have a general enquiry regarding
recruitment or careers in marketing and communications, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Youll nd our
contact details on the back page of this guide.
We look forward to hearing from you.

COMMERCE & INDUSTRY
The commerce and industry sector
experienced a somewhat turbulent 2011.
The rst half of the year was buoyant, but
this gave way to a stagnant and sporadic
H2. This second six months was
particularly notable for clients hesitance
in the face of an uncertain economic
climate. As a result, the duration of typical
recruitment cycles increased signicantly
and clients expectations of candidates
were raised. Where, in years gone by, an
individuals potential might have
compensated for a perceived skill
shortage, recent assignments suggest
that employers are using far stricter
selection criteria at the moment.
In spite of this, there was an unfaltering
demand for digital and ecommerce
professionals, along with acquisition,
retention and proposition managers. The
bigger names in the telecommunications
and utilities sectors, in particular, faced
up to tougher competition and reduced
marketing budgets. Companies continued
to innovate and opt for smarter and more
cost-effective means to engage with
potential employees, and it is expected
that this trend will continue well into
2012.
LONDON AND
THE SOUTH
FINANCIAL SERVICES
2011 started positively for the nancial
services market, following a successful
2010. Recruitment was consistent in
retail, corporate and investment, and
more temporary professionals than usual
were taken on across the retail banking
space. Marketing and communication
posts in nancial services are highly
vulnerable to changes in the wider
market, recruitment slowed as the year
progressed and market uncertainty
emerged. By H2, recruitment levels were
down across the board for temporary and
permanent workers. As we head into
2012 with continuing uncertainly, we
believe the employment market will
reect this turbulence.
Where we have seen consistency in the
market is in the digital, internal
communications and product space.
Digital professionals are being recruited
consistently in the nancial services
sector and candidates with these skills
are able to command a decent uplift in
salary when they move to new company.
Internal communications professionals
especially those with change
management experience continue to be
sought after, and this is especially true in
a temporary capacity. Candidates with
specic product experience will always be
in high demand in this sector.
6 MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS | HUDSON SALARY GUIDE 2012 LONDON AND THE SOUTH
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Current market uncertainties have not
had the same impact on the professional
services space. Indeed, we witnessed an
uplift in the recruitment of people for
xed-term contract roles in comparison to
past years. There is still a particularly high
demand for strong business development
managers and bid managers, with a
particular call for junior and mid-level
candidates.
Salaries for senior level roles have mostly
stagnated over recent years, but a clear
talent shortage in junior to mid-level
candidates has meant a small increase in
wages compared to recent years. As
companies look to increase their
competitive edge through 2012, they will
need to increase their salary and personal
development offering.
PUBLIC SECTOR &
NOT-FOR-PROFIT
There have been a lot of cuts and
redundancies across the public sector
especially across government
departments. This has created a surplus
of internal/stakeholder communications
candidates whose roles have not been
absorbed in other sectors. Overall,
salaries have been affected and more
clients are opting for xed-term contracts
rather than day rates.
The not-for-prot, membership, housing
and education sectors remain more
stable. In these environments there has
been a stronger demand for marketing
candidates with a commercial
background personnel who can drive
products or services and focus on return
on investment, allowing organisations to
survive in a more competitive market.

SALARY TABLES
THE MIDLANDS
AND NORTH
THE MIDLANDS AND NORTH 20 MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS | HUDSON SALARY GUIDE 2012
UK MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS | HUDSON SALARY GUIDE 2012 21
In 2011, the economic climate in the
Midlands and North of England continued
to be challenging for marketing and
communications professionals. The retail
industry suffered in particular, with a lack
of consumer disposable income hitting
the bottom line. This, coupled with
restructures and mergers for some of the
larger employers across the region, has
left the employment market in a state of
uncertainty.
Businesses are trying to strike the right
balance between a drive for prot and
investing in traditional and digital
marketing channels to engage with their
customers. While the recruitment market
has picked up year on year, hirers have
remained frugal and cautious about
permanent headcount plans. At the same
time though, they have been anxious not
to be left behind with advances relating to
social media and mobile marketing
companies have recognised that social
media and digital marketing via
computers and smart phones can be a
cost-effective and engaging way to retain
customers and acquire new ones. As a
result, there has been a continued
appetite for digital and e-commerce
professionals.
THE MIDLANDS
AND NORTH
There has also been a demand for
candidates in the elds of market
research, analysis and insight for
consumer and business services sectors
this seems to be part of a push to
ensure the right customers are being
targeted, at the right time, and through
the right channel or mix of channels.
Internal communications personnel also
remain a key target, as businesses look to
retain and engage staff in support of their
sustainable growth plans. This has
created a requirement for permanent and
interim personnel with these skill sets,
who can work with commercial marketing
and human resources colleagues.
As we move through 2012, we need to be
conscious that candidates will think long
and hard before they commit to a career
move. Therefore, to secure the best
talent, organisations across all sectors
will need to demonstrate sustainable
growth plans, as well as committed
headcount plans and robust, innovative
and engaging recruitment strategies.

SCOTLAND 36 MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS | HUDSON SALARY GUIDE 2012
COMMERCE & INDUSTRY
We continue to see steady growth in
marketing and communications
recruitment activity across a range of
sectors, and commerce and industry can
be highlighted as an area that should
experience signicant growth through
2012. Utilities and FMCG companies are
particularly active in hiring new talent to
drive growth in targeted areas and
business essential roles. In-demand skills
include digital marketing, brand and
product marketing.
The manufacturing and IT sectors are
hiring commercial marketers typically
those with a breadth of business-to-
business (B2B) marketing experience
as they continue to maximise existing
client pools and seek out new markets.
Their preference appears to be for a
broader B2B marketing skill set, however
digital expertise also continues to be
highly sought after. We expect this trend
to continue in 2012, with companies
looking to integrate more digital activity
into their marketing strategies to respond
to cost and customer experience drives.
SCOTLAND
Unsurprisingly, construction and related
sectors are still nding the market
difcult, with only the most essential hires
being made.
In the private sector, companies continue
to take a cautious approach to growth
and are managing costs tightly. We
expect the numbers of interim
opportunities to grow in 2012, as more
and more companies appreciate that they
can bring in high calibre, interim
marketing talent without having to commit
to permanent headcount.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
The nancial services sector continues to
be a dominant employment market for
marketing and communications
professionals in Scotland.
There is major demand for interim
resource. Indeed, the sustained increase
in demand for high calibre contractors
has resulted in talent shortages,
particularly in areas like internal
communications and product, driving up
day rates. There was limited growth in the
permanent opportunities market through
2011, and we envisage this trend will
continue in 2012. With that said, there is
still a demand for commercially-focused,
revenue-generating marketing
professionals who can improve product
performance and drive customer
acquisition.
Throughout 2011, we saw an increase in
the demand for candidates with an
agency background, with organisations
seeking to enhance their in-house
marketing capability and reduce
marketing agency costs. Typically, these
candidates have strong customer-centric
experience, they have worked on high
volume campaigns and have the breadth
of multi-channel experience.
As digital and social media continued to
grow, many clients recognised that they
needed to bring in experienced resources
or invest in up-skilling current marketing
team members. Clients are actively
seeking candidates with knowledge and
experience of social media, web analytics
and other emerging digital technologies.
Many nancial services companies that
are seeking out the best senior talent are
opting for Hudsons search and selection
activity, which utilises the extensive reach
UK MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS | HUDSON SALARY GUIDE 2012 37
of our global database and network.
Following the high levels of recruitment
activity in Scotland over recent years, we
envisage that there will be a continued
demand to seek out a new candidate pool
for mid to senior marketers across the UK
and overseas.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Through 2011, a number of professional
services companies were keen to invest
in marketing and communications after
reassessing their marketing and business
development functions. Many recognised
they needed to bring in the best
commercial thinking talent to develop a
competitive edge, retain business and
attract new contracts; and they were
prepared to offer very competitive
salaries to acquire high calibre
candidates.
We predict that the growing demand for
permanent business development and
tender managers will continue through
2012. This is as a direct result of the
increased competition between local and
national rms.
The most buoyant marketing and
communications roles in the professional
services sector were permanent, junior to
mid-level positions (salary ranges from
25,000 to 35,000). We have not seen
an increase in the demand for interim
contracts in this area, which bucks the
trend in other sectors, though the full
impact of public sector austerity
measures may well change this in 2012.
It has started to become a challenge to
nd candidates of the right calibre for
new positions, with the sustained growth
in demand over the last year now
outstripping supply. This has resulted in
more active headhunting and networking
activity.
PUBLIC SECTOR &
NOT-FOR-PROFIT
As expected, we have seen a signicant
reduction in the amount of permanent
and interim opportunities for marketing
and communications professionals in all
areas of the public sector. Not-for-prot
organisations have also been heavily
impacted by cuts as a result of the
reduction in allocated funding to the third
sector. Naturally, these organisations
have had to limit their headcount numbers
to overcome this loss.
There has been continued demand for
permanent and interim candidates in
specialist areas, however. The candidates
with skill sets in digital marketing, PR and
internal communications will continue to
be highly sought after through 2012.
Restricted budgets mean that many
organisations have been focusing on
more cost effective marketing activity and
are therefore maximising the use of
digital media.
As the public sector continues to go
through a period of unprecedented
change, both culturally and structurally,
many organisations will need to invest in
employee engagement activity.
