Chapter 1 Safety
CAUTION
The FBC1 is designed to clean FC/PC, SC, and ST connectors only. Thorlabs
is not liable for damage caused in an attempt to apply this device to other
applications.

WARNING
Although the FBC1 is deemed safe, improper usage can still inflict injury to
others.
1.1. Notes on Usage
Do not attempt to disassemble the unit as this can cause damage to the
device.
Do not reuse the cleaning cloth as this will eliminate its cleaning ability.
Do not touch the cleaning cloth as this will contaminate it.
Do not pull the cleaning cloth; only handle the FBC1 by the case.
Do not use the cleaner when the cloth is empty, as this can damage
your fiber connector.
1.2. Long-Term Storage
Do not expose the FBC1 to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or high humidity.
The cover on the guide cap should be closed at all times when the device is not
in use.

Chapter 2 Operating Instructions
CAUTION
Be careful not to slant the FBC1 while inserting it into the connector.
Do not overly exert force during insertion as this may cause damage to both
the connector and the FBC1.
If step 3 (pushing the case to clean the connector) is difficult, remove the
FBC1 from the connector and ensure there is no sizable debris inhibiting the
cleaning process.
2.1. Cleaning FC/PC, SC, or ST Bulkhead Connectors
Step 1: Remove Guide Cap from the device.
Step 2: Insert the tip of the cleaner into the bulkhead connector.
Note: The FBC1 can either be used in Standard Mode or Extended Mode. To use
extended mode, pull the tip outward and while simultaneously pushing down on
the lock button, as shown in Figure 1.

Step 3: Push the case to start the cleaning process. A click indicates the end of
the cleaning process. Close the cover after each use. An example of the cleaning
process is pictured in Figure 2.

2.2. Cleaning an FC/PC, SC, or ST Fiber Endface
Step 1: Open the cover on the guide cap.
Step 2: Insert the fiber connector onto the guide cap.
Step 3: Push the outer shell to start cleaning the fiber endface. A click indicates
the end of the cleaning process. Close the cover after each use. An example of
the cleaning process is pictured in Figure 3.

2.3. Identifying Remaining Life
The FBC1 contains an indicator to indicate the amount of remaining cleaning
cloth. When the indicator window appears red, and no cloth is visible on the
nozzle end, the cleaner is empty. It is not possible to reload the cleaner. The
indicator windows location is pictured in Figure 4.

Chapter 3 Regulatory
As required by the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive)
of the European Community and the corresponding national laws, Thorlabs offers
all end users in the EC the possibility to return end of life units without incurring
disposal charges.
This offer is valid for Thorlabs electrical and electronic equipment:
Sold after August 13, 2005
Marked correspondingly with the crossed out
wheelie bin logo (see right)
Sold to a company or institute within the EC
Currently owned by a company or institute
within the EC
Still complete, not disassembled and not
contaminated
As the WEEE directive applies to self contained
operational electrical and electronic products, this end of
life take back service does not refer to other Thorlabs products, such as:
Pure OEM products, that means assemblies to be built into a unit by the
user (e.g. OEM laser driver cards)
Components
Mechanics and optics
Left over parts of units disassembled by the user (PCBs, housings etc.).
If you wish to return a Thorlabs unit for waste recovery, please contact Thorlabs
or your nearest dealer for further information.
3.1. Waste Treatment is Your Own Responsibility
If you do not return an end of life unit to Thorlabs, you must hand it to a
company specialized in waste recovery. Do not dispose of the unit in a litter bin
or at a public waste disposal site.
3.2. Ecological Background
It is well known that WEEE pollutes the environment by releasing toxic products
during decomposition. The aim of the European RoHS directive is to reduce the
content of toxic substances in electronic products in the future.
The intent of the WEEE directive is to enforce the recycling of WEEE. A
controlled recycling of end of life products will thereby avoid negative impacts on
the environment.
