Sculptor's Corner: Why We Are Here
From humble beginnings at Lake Atasca in what is now northern Minnesota
the Mississippi River travels through the very heart of our country. This is a
major flyway for migrating birds and the source of game and wildlife through
the ages. Traveling through the plains and sandstone bluffs of ancient
geology, the River defines our geography and our human endeavors along its
way. Human history along the river reaches back into the misty stories of

early civilizations.

Our beautiful Wisconsin River, originating and ending within the state of
Wisconsin, travels through the northern lake country on down past Portage
where early travelers came from the Fox River bringing their canoes west. It
meanders through farmland and forested hills inviting the spirit of adventure
and exploration with camping and campfires on sandy islands.

PIG IN THE PARK II
Last year, people came to Pig in the Park for the food and stayed for the music. This year, the food at the
Mississippi River Sculpture Park will be even better, and the duo of Suzanne Shaw and Shane Hazen will
again compete for your heart. They've already won ours by donating their music to entertain us. Thank you
Suzanne and Shane!

Dine with the statues at the park on St. Feriole Island on Saturday, July 10, from 5pm until dark, rain or
shine. We will feature shredded pork sandwiches, homemade coleslaw, beans & dressing. Cost for the
dinner is $8 for adults, and $4 for children three to twelve. Children under three can eat for free. Pop and
bottled water will be for sale, but you can bring other beverages. Schwann's ice cream wagon will attend, with
desserts for sale.

Two raffles are new this year, with tickets available that night. A 50:50 raffle gives one lucky $1 ticket holder
half of the proceeds. We'll also raffle off fresh meat from chef Dale Klemme's larder. The winners of this one
will be able to pick up pork chops, bacon and pork ribs at the Eastman locker. (INSERT PRICE FOR

keeping you abreast of activities at the Park, and find out about volunteer opportunities, like helping out at
events (most of which are free to the public). In this first year of the Friends' program, we're kicking off the

That's a lifetime guarantee!

Our first goal is to complete Phase I of the Park by casting and installing the sculptures of Emma Gib Beag
and John Lawler. Step one is to raise the balance of funds needed for installation of the remarkable sculpture
of Emma Big Bear by the artist Florence Bird. The Sculpture Park Board has already raised half of the
$80,000 need to bring Emma to the Park, making our target $40,000 in 2010.

Geocaching in the Sculpture Park

Tom Nelson identifies himself and Bob Helgerson
as "groundskeepers," the guys who care for the
Sculpture Park lawn and keep an eye on the
sculptures. But they've also added something to
the park, and with it, one more activity that
visitors can try. It's geocaching, what Nelson
describes as treasure hunting using a GPS.

Coordinates - latitudes and longitudes -- are
posted on the official website, http://www.geocaching.com. Once the correct spot is found, the geocacher
looks for the hidden container. Read more...
