Philosophy and Science, what is the connection?

The connection between science and philosophy has endured for thousands of years. In
present-day conditions it has not only been preserved but is also growing substantially
stronger. The scale of the scientific work and the social significance of research have
acquired huge proportions. or e!ample" philosophy and physics were at first organically
interconnected" particularly in the work of #alileo" $escartes" %epler" &ewton"
'omonosov" (endeleyev and )instein" and generally in the work of all scientists with a
broad outlook.
*t one time it was commonly held that philosophy was the science of sciences" their
supreme ruler. Today physics is regarded as the queen of sciences. +oth views contain a
certain measure of truth. ,hysics with its tradition" the specific objects of study and vast
range of e!act methods of observation and e!periment e!erts an e!ceptionally fruitful
influence on all or nearly all spheres of knowledge.
,hilosophy may be called the -science of sciences- probably in the sense that it is" in
effect" the self-awareness of the sciences and the source from which all the sciences draw
their world-view and methodological principles" which in the course of centuries have
been honed down into concise forms.
*s a whole" philosophy and the sciences are equal partners assisting creative thought in
its e!plorations to attain generalising truth. ,hilosophy does not replace the specialised
sciences and does not command them" but it does arm them with general principles of
theoretical thinking" with a method of cognition and world-view. In this sense scientific
philosophy legitimately holds one of the key positions in the system of the sciences.

3an philosophy develop by itself" without the support of science4 3an science -work-

that it is characterised by their ever deepening interaction4

I agree with you. Science without thought is bad science. )ven *lbert )instein
knew the solution to the general relativity problem = years before he was able to
describe it in math. It was the philosophy of science that solved the problem and it
took = years working with (arcel #rossman a ,5$ in math to come up with the

without ,hilosophy is just plugging and chugging into equations with mindless
work that may or may not be correct.
Science is the turning of ,hilosophy into understanding reality. >e can only do so

I believe the origin of philosophy was from the very beginning of the 3osmos.
great astronomers" philosophers always ga?ed the sky and the stars beyond" and
formulated hypothesis without any e!ternal aids and have proven to be true. *n
e!ample is ancient astrology where the period of planets" eclipses occurrences are
valid even till today.
>e and the world we live in is the tiniest speck in the 3osmos. In the @ltimate
te!ts books on vedantic literature reference is made to the 3osmic Total mind and
living beings are the limited mind a part of IT. If the universe is seen from the
microcosm to the macrocosm and vice versa D i.e" particles to sub atomic levelsE"
we see a very large picture beyond comprehension to the common man. In the
atomic level science and man have shown limited but formidable progressF
destructive and constructive. In the 3osmic level our limitations are seen. .The
vedantic te!ts refer this as an illusion of the Total (ind that Sees and the Seen as
the 6bject and a debate is made on >hich came first. It concludes that the
@niverse is just an )!pression of the Seer.
It is the firm belief on the higher @nseen force which makes man to contemplate

things and transforms to a higher level.

*ctually philosophy is a non-mathematical e!pression of truth. or a modern researcher
it is science.
If one is able to e!press his scientific findings in a simple way which common intelligent
people from any discipline in the society can understand then he is honored by the society
with a nice title.
Somehow in each areas of science dominated by groups of intellectuals decide and award
this recognition. Though what is prevailing now is the best thing we can think offF
,hilosophy sometimes gets undermined with the nature of scientific work reported and
being accepted.
6ne cannot e!pect true philosophy and true science every time and everywhere but surely
it motivates even an average individual to seek higher goals" and in the process
encouraging creativity which I think ,hilosophy drives scientists to the very limits of
human endeavor.

>hy is man made limited in this limitless space4 >hat is the capacity in man to

*re all human minds capable in unison to understand these intricacies or one master

simple or blind faith in accepting the same said by a master scientist which now is
through a collective body. @nfortunately for the majority it is #reek and 'atin including
many of those who advocate it.
Till all the scientists understand wholeheartedly" then the natural way is to accept the

>hile the debate goes on for the greatest philosopher" the few smart ones around have
their own thinking and become philosophical within their limitations" and the eager
people around the world really appreciate their thoughts which is indeed philosophical.

Simple birth of any species is due to and for happiness. The event makes everyone happy"
and the manner in which it takes place is a study undertaken by few we call scientists out
of curiosity and knowledge and to be of service to all.
)veryone knows that what all has been studied and understood by science Fso far is very
remarkable and astounding" but from a higher standpoint it is indeed superficial. or the
common man simple fact beyond the happy event has no meaning" and neither the
probing scientist can ensure the happy event to take place. +ut the scientist does help to
monitor the events and even warn and give remedies to ensure the event is indeed a
happy one. +ut the secrets of birth and death remain still very elusive.
This is where the philosophy begins of a scientist who is helplessly trying to probe the
unknown. To probe the known is what we all know is not science and is called
technology.
So the helplessness of a scientist initially is the root cause of philosophy. The less
talented pray to a higher force" and the scientist assuming a role of never dying spirit
pursues further. This )#6 is a natural gift given to man which makes him to do wonders
and probe the unknown and makes life worth living and is not mere birth and death.
+ut when the )#6 goes too far assuming additional roles of invincibility F &ature does
get offended as some of the scientists channeli?es their energy to destructive purposes
also. The present day science does both these things and commerciali?ation adds a
different color camouflaging the true value of science.

The cause of creation including the vast universe what we see including the living and
non-living wonders have been beyond the reach of man for ages and till now. The
arguments get subtler and subtler as one digs deeper into the cause and is beyond all the
philosophies as to what scientists can imagine leave alone prove.
The present rules of science support only proper hypotheses validated by e!periments or
logical reasoning done with the help of mathematics" and through other recogni?ed
methods.
5owever the cause of creation and its vastness and all those unknowns canIt be e!plained

If philosophy is the source and cause then science is the result and action. The very award
of a degree namely ,h$ is for a recognition to all scientists by the society which acts as
an inspiration to all scientists added with a higher position in the strata of society.
,hilosophy being so abstract has any scientist questioned the very title4
If any scientist argues that philosophy is not the cause but only ones intelligence and hard
work is the cause called philosophy then the arguments will tow a different line.
If many shares the above view we can perhaps have a separate session like abstract
philosophy versus concrete philosophy F scientific philosophers versus the traditional
philosophers etc.

The heart is the source of life" one with the qualities of love" courage" inspiration"
emotion" contentment and is philosophical. The mind on the other side manifests" wills"
gets ignited" acts" recogni?es and is basically restless and science is one its useful
outcome..&o heart means is a mindless person.
*ctually the heart we are talking about is one of the compartments in our mind filled with
love and compassion. 5eartlessness is often referred to as a wicked and vain person.
>hen the active mind recogni?es this love and compassion" it acts in a creative manner
without any bias. In all these consciousness is the common factor.
Sundaresan Muthuswamy 8 C.11 8 0.2 8 Indian Institute of Science
Truth in the individual level is what one thinks" talks and acts do not cause conflicts in
any way. The individual can be ignorant or intelligent it does not matter.
The truth in worldly actions be it science" literature" politics or governance should follow
a well laid out procedure which are wisely done with strict rules and are to be followed.
In Science the term physics and mathematics are the key words which all of us have no
doubt. 5owever in worldly matters as subjective influence comes into the picture
especially the leaders that are chosen the meaning of truth often gets distorted.
5owever in the @niversal level the ultimate truth is that one that does not change in all
periods of time that is past" present and future.
That is why the worldly truth is often referred to as relative reality both from physical
e!istence to the mental plane of e!pression in man.
Truth is beauty and beauty is truth" and anyone who really understands this statement will
be closer to truth.

,hilosophy is the science of thought while modern science is the science in action
&o thought means no action hence no science. Thoughts are intrinsic while science is
e!plicit. &o proofs are required in philosophy which is a thought procedure.
Just carried away by science alone means wonderfully drifting in the oceans of

3reativity is one of the e!pressions of philosophy. 3reative ideas can strike the mind only
once to a philosophical mind. 3reative ideas when once written can be read any number
of times and it will look always beautiful. Science also the outcome of philosophy is
beautiful only when created and attracts the mind initially after which it is taken for
granted and the mind waits for another wonder to be created.
&atures 3reation is different from manIs creation and will make him wonder all the time
and is always beautiful. 5ence the 3reation by &ature can always be considered as a

I should agree with what you have nicely said. This mind of ours is really mind boggling
and to talk of the mind we really can talk for ages. *ctually most of us write our inner

>hen a man thinks consciously" his thoughts are directed mostly on what he has already
e!perienced and physically conceived. Then when he sets to write and talk about it and
share with others it is close to the scientific conferences" discourses" reporting" debating
etc. This is the way the world functions and transactions done. This means that creative
thoughts which has already been created is shared with all. *ll that has been thought and
created is a thing of the very near and distant past. The beauty of all the new things
created can definitely be admired and adored but the moment it is put into action it is a
past matter.
5ence all that is created is a thing of past and is within the field of consciousness very
aware in man. +ut when man reflects on what all is done and that e!ists not by thinking
alone but with newer thoughts from his deeper consciousness with a sense of probing
then he progresses further and such thoughts are indeed philosophical and tend towards
newer truth.
,hilosophical mind is one thing while philosophical thoughts is another thing. >hile the
philosophical mind is the e!isting man itself the philosophical thoughts seem to come
from nowhere and give us continually greater insights of human e!istence and &ature

Some further thoughts .-
Thought is considered as knowledge which is in reality a ocean of knowledge in the field
of consciousness. The mind which is pure by itself has the greatest capacity with a
wonderful trait to think and think. >hen the minds frequencies occurring during the
quietest moments consciously or unconsciously arising has the ability to tune with the
ocean of knowledge and be in communion with it. $epending on the particular
knowledge the individual is well versed or blessed with his mind system naturally seeks
information in this ocean. >hen successful the flow of thoughts pour into ones mind
overwhelming him and e!citing him" the mind then thinks and action starts. )very field
of knowledge has its own frequency to be tuned which various individuals in various
fields benefit.
(ere thinking without proper tuning is only pastime for the individual.
The scientist who is ever alert and dedicated with a proper mind instrument tuned to
perfection makes headway in the field of research.

sweet golden fruit. 5ow does this happen and this happens even after the raw matured

with other frequencies they are sometimes the carrier of sub frequencies. This corrupts

Hou have given a nice practical view which I fully accept and respect. >e all are still
trying to get some answers on the mysteries of life. *ll what has been e!pressed by me is
not mine but only the inner thoughts which echo time and again in response to the
questions addressed in this thread. In fact I have become a little more wiser in this
process of understanding myself and &ature.
Today morning a thought came to me that when man can make so many wonderful
electronic gadgets which can record and play live videos using various transmission
methods" including computers etc which is real" then how can nature and its ways lag
behind4 Hou touch anything" and man cannot proceed after a certain point be it life or

and is impossible to man to understand how &aturesI Intelligence is stored and put into

- .. In a word " in one word" I am a PrealistQ.-
This line That I am so and so..... is worth being reflected back. (ansI ego is the one
responsible for growth and motivating factor that does wonders and that is reality no
doubt. Science is the outcome and thinking or inventions though originating from a mans
mind is close to philosophy. The word I I I is really lost in the multitude of this creation
and is very impermanent" but when when inquires deeply the real meaning of I I I within

(any a times I used to feel the striking contrast that e!ists between the language of an
intellectual and the raw e!pressions of a person living in the rural regions be it a farmer"
an elderly village women or those to whom education was only a thing of past that
perhaps had been a necessity as a matter of routine and that which could not be avoided.
Then inevitably there happens to be a comparison between intellectual wisdom versus the
raw e!pression of the ordinary. It suddenly dawned to me the world order has been going
on socially in a clustered way with each types or groups of people getting together and
e!pressing themselves. The very intelligent have a mathematical e!pression while to the
ordinary it is just plain language in what they are familiar.
)ven though science is really very diverse and its quality and e!pression had changed
over the agesF now it is plainly a language of the very high intellectuals with the most of
the commoners being left out. It has become very discrete and isolated" mathematical in
many ways" and reference made to on only recogni?ed literatureIs that are being
considered as standard.
It is like one who has dug deep into an area of interest keeps digging further and in doing
so many also are being carried along. Similarly there are so many pits of knowledge
being dug which are all discrete and different from each other. >e are always at the
mercy of &ature as it is a great leveler in time and space.
The journey of digging in to unravel the mysteries is indeed e!cellent" involving great
effort and time" but to the the &ature it is really an amusement as it has really infinite
things in store.
The procedure of digging would have differed in course of time" but the spirit of science
and philosophy would not have changed from ages. 'ots of holes have been dug in the
meanwhile. Some have been death traps in the form of modern warfare" and on some
there had been no takers. Science on very specific areas can always be talked to any
length by a practicing individual the e!perience varying on the variety and degree of
pursuit" but the underlying philosophy is always the same" that man always tries to pursue
the path of e!cellence
.&o single individual can ever e!perience the entirety of science and its depths" but by
partaking in it F he definitely can understand the underlying philosophy.
or this the views e!pressed by great scientists alone need not necessarily be taken as
authority. In fact a simple villager who has no bias would e!press his inner feelings that
sometimes would be more close to the raw truth. 5ence the meaning and feeling of
philosophy e!pressed by unrecogni?ed non- intellectuals can also have a deeper meaning
Science and philosophy is actually the very life we all breathe and live in" and to talk
about it is always fascinating and endless.
