INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

The experiment pertaining to Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) discussed
its current-voltage characteristics.

In this experiment, a methanol solution was added to a direct methanol fuel
cell, which is connected to a multidecade resistor. We are tasked to observe the
relationship between the current and voltage as well as the voltage and power as
we decrease the value of the resistance from infinity to zero ohms. After
recording the data, we observed that as we decreased the value of the resistance
from infinity to zero ohms, the resulting voltage decreases meaning that they are
directly proportional and the resulting current increases as the resistance
decreases thus they are inversely proportional. We also computed for the resulting
power of the DMFC and plot the results.

Based from results, the highest voltage has a zero current; this is because
the resistance is very high that it makes the circuit open. Also, the lowest voltage
has the highest current because the resistance is zero making the circuit short.

Analyzing the graph, we realized that in the current-voltage graph, as the
voltage increases, the current decreases. We also observed that the current starts
to drop rapidly at the point where maximum power occurred.

Comparing the PEM fuel cell and the direct methanol fuel cell, we observed
that the DMFC did not go through electrolysis unlike the PEM fuel cell where
electrolysis happened. Another difference between the two fuel cells is that
PEMFC uses hydrogen for power while in DMFC; methanol in liquid form reacts
with water to create carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and electrons. The hydrogen ions
travel through a thin plastic film polymer and react with oxygen that creates
electricity. In PEMFC, solar cells are used to give power to the electrolysis process
while in DMFC, solar cells are not connected because it does not require
electrolysis, it does not require hydrogen storage tank or reformer. Also, DMFC
has a simpler design, with the potential for low-volume, lightweight packaging.
