Peninsula Sport Primary and Secondary Championships The 2014 Peninsula Track and Field Trials are the largest athletics championships in Far North Queensland, with over 1000 athletes competing over two days.
And whilst the championships are not a Cairns Athletics run event, it is without a doubt that the club is a major contributor supplying equipment, photo finish and officials.
Some may ask why go to the trouble, given it is not our event, as the combined man hours required from a small group of club members would run into hundreds of hours?
The answer is simple by supporting athletics in the region we allow for more school based athletes to experience an international quality facility, in a competition being run by qualified track and field officials. Obviously not all will join the athletics clubs within the region, but some will from this experience and that helps grow the sport. With growth comes more funding, securing of facilities, and better opportunities for our club athletes.
And looking at the medallist within the two days of competition, our club has grown a strong group of athletes, with over 18 of our athletes medalling in the top school based competition in the region.
So we take the good with the bad. It was fantastic to see many of our athletes make their way through at least three rounds of qualifying to simply make it to Peninsula Trials, and as noted above over eighteen of them medalling.
And by running the canteen for the competition the club was able to generate sufficient income to cover over half of the seasons hire costs of Barlow Park.
However, once again the running of the canteen was left to the same small group of volunteers. Cairns Athletics are extremely grateful to following volunteers, led by our canteen coordinator Raelene Henery and our two spring chickens Audrey and Connie, Tracey Bretz, Trudy Watson, Dianne Porter, Ruth Phillips, Cathy Marino, Julie Dalton, Sue Slatcher, Junko Godwin, Yumi Taylor, Vince Slater, Hiromi Yamanak and Scott Henery.
And without some of our athletes coming in to assist in the canteen over the two days, including two taking a sickie from classes on Monday, and a couple doing shifts in between competing in their events, it would have been a struggle to keep up with the hordes of hungry spectators, so again our gratitude goes to our athletes who assisted in the canteen; Jane Rhodes, Noah Watson, Ceiridwen Vaughan, Llewellyn Vaughn, and Theo Watson.
And finally to our officials who assisted on the track and field and photo finish, our wouldnt be able to contribute to the sport as we do without you volunteering their time over the two days of competition; Sue Slatcher, Kevin Cull, Mal Frape, Rob Murchie, Jim Orchard, Richard and Jean Lendon, Rob Brennan and Heather Vaughan.
2014 Peninsula Trials Medallist Congratulations to all of our athletes who made it through three separate carnivals to qualify for the Peninsula Championships. Simply making it to the top school based completion in the region is a great achievement.
And the following athletes* have taken it to the next level, making it into the top three, and in many cases qualifying for the Peninsula Team to compete in Brisbane in the Queensland School Championships.

2015 Club Captains Nominations are now open for the 2015 Cairns Athletics Club Captains. For 2015, we are calling for written nominations for athletes in the following groups:
Junior Club Captain: Those athletes that are 12 or 13 years old as at the 31st December 2014 are invited to nominate for the Junior Club Captain
Senior Club Captain: Those athletes 14 years old and over as at the 31st December 2014 are invited to nominate for the Senior Club Captain
Nomination forms will be available at the Registration Desk and should be lodged personally by each interested athlete. Nominations close on Friday 19th September.
Committee Positions As briefly discussed at the break at club on Sunday, supporters of Cairns Athletes are asked to start considering how they might be able to assist their club in 2015.
There will be quite a few positions vacant in 2015 as some committee stand down from their positions.
On the positive side of things this should be seen as an opportunity for an injection of fresh ideas and enthusiasm for the club, but dont sit back and think someone else will fill these roles, because on the negative side of things if these roles arent filled the club will struggle to operate in 2015.
If you think you might be interested in joining the committee in 2015 please have a chat to either Tracey Bretz or me on what roles will need filling, and the tasks involved. This will also give the opportunity to work with the volunteers currently in those roles to provide a seamless transfer for the 2015 season.
ANQ Track and Field Championships This is the last competition on the club season, and one which is worth planning for now.
Accommodation can be a bit scarce in Townsville over these dates, so make the bookings now.
ANQ Track and Field Championships will be held from the 3 rd to 5 th October, 2014. Online nominations are now on the ANQ website, www.athleticsnorthqld.org.au and links.
