This document describes a method and apparatus for reconnecting a rotating motor to a motor drive. The motor is excited to induce a back electromotive force (EMF) to determine the motor's speed and direction of rotation. The motor drive is then reconnected to the motor based on the determined speed. A positive feedback loop is used to continuously increase the back EMF as the motor is excited, allowing the speed to be accurately measured. Current flowing through the motor is controlled using first and second regulators whose outputs are separated in phase by approximately 90 degrees.
