ABOUT DREAM CARVER
Dream Carver is a 55-minute bilingual musical based on the childrens book
of the same name written by Diana Cohn and illustrated by Amy Cordova.
It is the story of Mateo, a young boy in Oaxaca, Mexico whose father has
taught him to carve small wooden toys in the traditional way. One night,
Mateo dreams of fantastic, brightly colored animals that dance and sing,
led by a charismatic quetzal. When he awakes, he is impelled to carve his
dream animals into life.
Dream Carver features a variety of colorful handcrafted puppets, including
large-scale, full-body hand puppets, rod puppets and black-light puppets.
The set is a multilevel environment that evokes a pastoral Mexican
landscape and captures the essence of the books illustrations.
The show features a cast of puppeteers whose credits include Avenue Q,
The Pee-wee Herman Show and The Muppets. The message of the show is
delivered in fve original songs that encourage young audiences to think
creatively, try new things, and follow their dreams.

A Seminar for Teachers
and Teaching Artists
On a Saturday in late April 2013, Deborah Brzoska met with
teaching artists and teachers from four Nebraska communities for
The Arts are About Ideas! During this full-day professional development
seminar, K12 teachers and teaching artists from Crete, Macy, Madison
and Lincoln uncovered new ways to use the arts to enhance learning
across the curriculum. Brzoska demonstrated how integrating art
encourages higher order thinking, creativity, and an open-minded
exploration of ideas. She also illustrated how these new methods relate to
state and national efforts to develop common core standards. Teams of
artists and teachers shared effective residency strategies, and planned
new arts integration lessons for 13/14.
Brzoska is part of a teaching artist cadre affliated with the Kennedy Centers
