Ever since its initial steps in the fifties
as the construction division of Snam ,
the pipeline com pany of the Eni G roup
in Italy, Saipem has pursued
a system atic grow th strategy, based
on the developm ent of internal assets,
expertise and skilled resources, as w ell
as on the acquisition of other players
w ith their ow n asset bases, such as
M icoperi in late eighties, and m any
others.
In the last decade, Saipem has
continued its grow th by acquiring
Bouygues O ffshore and Sofresid in
France, M oss M aritim e in Norw ay, IDPE
in India and Snam progetti in Italy,
and by carrying out a m ultibillion
investm ent program into the expansion
of its offshore construction and drilling
fleets. Since the year 2000, Saipem s
m arket capitalization has grow n m ore
than sixfold and its revenues tenfold.(*)
The organizational integration of
this considerable asset base, nam ely
the netw ork of engineering centres,
fabrication and support yards in several
continents as w ell as the offshore
construction fleet, has been com pleted
gradually over the years - m ost recently
w ith the creation of a unified Business
Unit Engineering & Construction,
an entity w ith over 30,000 em ployees
(excluding corporate and BU Drilling
staff) from over 100 nationalities,
w ith over 60 perm anent establishm ents
and num erous project execution centres
around the globe, and w ith yearly
revenues exceeding 10 billion /y;
all held together by outstanding project

Both Snam progetti and Saipem draw
their roots m ore than fifty years ago
from the design and laying of com plex
oil and gas transportation system s.
Born at the tim e as divisions of Snam
S.p.A . (today Snam Rete G as S.p.A .),
follow ing their rapid grow th also
outside of Snam s m ission, they w ere
shortly thereafter spun off in order to
becom e m ajor independent players.
The oil and gas transportation system s
business, how ever, rem ained one of
their core activities and one of the
foundations of their subsequent
expansion.
In oil and gas pipelines both
com panies had full EPC capabilities,
although to a different degree:
Saipem s prim ary focus w as on
construction and related technologies
(such as w elding, etc.), w hereas
Snam progettis w as on engineering
and procurem ent services. For years,
therefore, Saipem and Snam progetti
com bined forces on the largest w orld
oil and gas transportation system s,
under a variety of EPC contractual
form s, m ostly w ith Saipem as the
leader.
In addition, the acquisition in 2002 by
Saipem of Bouygues O ffshore s.a.,
w ho at that tim e also ow ned the
engineering subsidiary Sofresid, had
brought to the new G roup num erous
active engineering resources,
specialized know -how , local presence
in certain key m arkets, extensive
references as w ell as som e ongoing
flagship projects in new m arkets.
Today, follow ing the full integration
of these constituent com panies,
Saipem is one of the leading full-
service engineering and construction
general contractors, w orld-w ide, in
pipeline system s as w ell as in m any
other oil and gas m arket segm ents.

To date, Saipem has designed
over 60,000 km and laid alm ost
100,000 km of land pipeline
system s, utilizing its ow n equipm ent
and assets, in alm ost every corner

The Italian oil and prim arily gas
transportation and distribution
netw ork (see separate story) - in
itself alm ost 40,000 km of
pipelines.
The gas supply system into Italy -
trunklines to bring in gas from Algeria,
Libya, Russia and the North Sea.

pipelines in every possible
physical environm ent: deserts, frost
lands, sw am ps, prairies, virgin
forests as w ell as densely inhabited
areas.

developm ent and utilization of the
m ost m odern design, diagnostic and

The developm ent of proprietary
tools and m ethodologies, such as

- of TA P, an advanced G as
Transportation technology for high
throughput pipelines at high
pressures, based on the application
of X100 high strength steel.
A com m ercial application of this
concept, extensively tested in a
three years long program at the
dem onstration plant in Sardinia,
has the potential of further reducing
large volum e gas transportation
costs over very long distances.

has thus perform ed num erous
projects on EPC or EPC S basis, as w ell
as m any other engineering-only
contracts, for a broad array of

Follow ing the m ore recent integration
of Snam progetti into Saipem , m ost of
the oil and gas transportation system
capabilities of Saipem w ere
concentrated in Fano, in order to
create a global centre of excellence,
specialized in all aspects of onshore oil
and gas transportation system s design
and execution: engineering,
procurem ent, construction, project
m anagem ent, R& D . In addition, the
Fano centre continues to be active in
several broader aspects of the
upstream w orld, beyond pipelines and
associated system s.
Today, several m ultibillion upstream
and generally pipeline-based
integrated projects, w orth billions of
Euros, are being designed and
executed under the leadership of the
Fano centre.
This centre continuously operates in
alignm ent w ith other Saipem
engineering centres w ith pipeline and
upstream capabilities, such as M ilan,
Italy and Paris, France, as w ell as w ith
m any regional centres, in order to
design and build large oil and gas
transportation and upstream system s
jointly.
The Fano centre also provides the
technical support and the
technological guidance to Saipem s
regional offices, in their efforts to
design and execute sm aller projects
autonom ously.

40 oil pum ping stations, for a total capacity exceeding 2,100 M W .

This track record com es in addition to
the integrated upstream projects, such
as the ones illustrated in the flagship
sections of this brochure, and those
presented in the parallel U pstream
brochure.
The Fano centre's total personnel
exceeds 1,100 em ployees, at the tim e
of w riting, of w hich alm ost 900
(including over 500 graduate
engineers) focus entirely or m ostly
on onshore activities and on
adm inistration.
To accom m odate the grow th, in 2008
the Fano centre has expanded its
facilities by adding a new office
building. Today, therefore, the centre
can house easily its perm anent staff
as w ell as dedicated project task
forces, w hich often include C lients
representatives, O w ners engineers
and occasionally subcontractors.

The pipeline w ill have a capacity of 670 m illion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

This 420 km 42gas transm ission pipeline, including m ainline valves and associated facilities, w ill

The oil and gas tw in onshore pipeline system in the harsh subarctic environm ent of Sakhalin Island in the
Russian Far East is a m ajor com ponent of one of the w orlds biggest integrated oil and gas projects. The
pipeline connects the Piltun-A stkhskoye and Lunskoye fields landfalls in the N E of Sakhalin Island to the
LN G Plant & O il Export Term inal in the South.
The design, carried out at Saipem s high value engineering centres in Italy, France and Russia, as w ell as the
construction activities conducted in a very rem ote area, required overcom ing significant challenges:
construction under extrem e clim atic conditions w ith tem peratures often below 45C and perm afrost
several m eters deep, across varied terrains; m ountains w ith steep slopes; sw am ps; ponds; crossing m ore
than 1,000 lakes and rivers; seism ic zones; forests and unexploded ordnance.

This 571 km , 10 loops pipeline is one of the pivotal com ponents of W estern A ustralias energy
infrastructure: it provides gas for approxim ately 30% of the states electricity needs.
Built in a w orld record tim e in nine m onths only under a LSTK contract, at a rate of 6.5 km a day, the gas
pipeline runs from N orth to South across W estern A ustralia.
Its route takes it across a diversity of terrains: sem i-arid plains, m ountains, rocks, 26 rivers, fields, deserts,
rich fauna, sw am ps, intensely cultivated farm lands and urban peripheries, as w ell as environm ental
protected aboriginal sites. This project follow s others built by Saipem in W estern A ustralia in earlier years;

The route for this gas pipeline, running from Rum uji to the Bonny N atural G as
Liquefaction plant, is located 70% in a sw am py environm ent and it is covered by dense
tropical vegetation. It also includes the crossing of the 6.2 km w ide Bonny river.
The construction w as executed under challenging geotechnical and environm ental
requirem ents, arising from the peculiar characteristics of the area: topography, geology,
soil types, sw am p areas, tropical vegetation and river crossings. A particular additional
challenge w as to secure unstable excavations, m ade in very perm eable sands subject to
seepage pressures. D eveloped dedicated laying barge for sw am py environm ents.

This 635 km 24oil export pipeline from Karachaganak Processing C om plex in N orth
W estern Kazakhstan to Bolshoi C hagan and to A tyrau on the C aspian Sea w as
executed under challenging logistics in a very rem ote and clim atically inhospitable
environm ent: extrem e conditions, due to snow and frozen terrains, as w ell as frequent
crossings of m ountains, lakes and rivers. The EPC project package included a gas
re-injection unit together w ith a gathering and re-injection pipeline netw ork, a gas
processing and oil condensate stabilization plant, a fuel gas sw eetening plant and all
associated pum ping stations and m etering facilities.

Several techniques are norm ally used
to back fill the excavated trenches. In
som e cases, in the presence of likely
seism ic fault locations, a special
proprietary design and construction
m ethodology are im plem ented to
safeguard the pipeline integrity in the
event of an earthquake.
The reinstatem ent process is typically
a series of steps: initially, the
restoration of drainage patterns and
landscape profiling, follow ed by
erosion control m easures and
structures, including slope breakers;
finally, a biological reinstatem ent,
involving the seeding of the right
of w ay, to prom ote a rapid return
of vegetative cover, via sow ing
of seeds by m anual crew s or
m echanical spreaders m ounted on
tractors; on a larger scale,
by hydro-seeding and aerial seeding
from a helicopter.
The exam ples show n here illustrate
the successful reinstatem ent
procedures at the Sakhalin II O nshore
Pipeline Project in far-eastern Russia.
For this one and for other analogous
efforts on the sam e project, the
Russian Federal M inister of N atural
Resources has given to Saipem the
Best Environm ental Project of the
Yearaw ard in 2008.

Snam (Societ N azionale
M etanodotti) w as founded in 1941
to exploit industrially the new ly
discovered gas fields in N orthern Italy:
a w artim e pipeline to bring gas to
M ilan (13 km M ilan ring) w as the
first such industrial achievem ent.
A fter the w ar follow ed a rapidly
grow ing netw ork: 257 km in 1948,
over 700 km in 1950, gradually
form ing a capillary system reaching
alm ost 40,000 km in 2009.
Today this is ow ned by Snam Rete
G as S.p.A ., the largest pipeline
operator in Italy and one of the
largest ones in the w orld, a com pany
form ed in the current shape in 2000.

In order to m ore effectively m anage
this com plex job of planning,
designing and building large-scale
pipelines, from the very beginning
Snam set up tw o new com panies
w hich, over the years, w ould forge
strong independent identities, and
later achieve a significant international
standing:
Snam M ontaggi in 1955 - renam ed
Saipem in 1957;
Snam Progetti in 1956 - later
renam ed Snam progetti and
incorporated into Saipem in 2006.
O ver all these years, in highly
com plem entary w ays, through
num erous large and challenging
projects, Saipem and Snam progetti
have cooperated in designing and
building m ajor offshore and onshore
trunkline system s to bring grow ing
gas supplies into Italy:
From Russia, N orw ay and the
N etherlands, since the 1970s,
including long pipeline stretches
through A ustria, G erm any and
Sw itzerland;
From A lgeria, from 1980s.
From Libya, starting in early 2000s.
The creation of this com plex dom estic
netw ork and international supply
system required overcom ing
num erous technical challenges.
For the onshore pipelines,
in particular, this m eant crossing rivers
and steep m ountain slopes, inserting
pipelines into existing tunnels,
developing new designs to protect
from geohazards and landslides as
w ell as restoration system s for the
protection of the environm ent, etc.
O ften, these pipeline projects w ere
also integrated into m ore com plex gas
transportation system s, w hich
included com pression stations,
upstream and dow nstream processing
plants, etc.
