Staff Picks: FRIDAY (1995, 35mm)
Staf pick of Ilyas!
When Craig manages to get fred on his day of, his friend
Smokey urges him to get high and kick back and enjoy the
lack of responsibility. Over one long day Craig deals with the
madness that surrounds him - his father hassling him from the
toilet, massive neighborhood bully Deebo looking to deck him,
and his not-girlfriend constantly calling and hanging up. With
Smokey in trouble for indulging in the weed that he was sup-
posed to sell, Craig is liable by default and must help him fnd
the money to pay for it. Ice Cube co-wrote as well as starred in
this comedy that put a light spin on the hard-hitting dramas of
the early 1990s.
ON THE WATERFRONT (1954)
Author Anne Helen Petersen (Scandals of Hollywood) joins
us to introduce a screening of ON THE WATERFRONT, a
classic that puts the full talent of Marlon Brando on display. He
stars as Terry Malloy, a lowly errand boy who once was a boxer,
trying to remain silent after witnessing a murder by the mob-
afliated union boss. But when he gets closer to the dead mans
sister, his feelings of guilt overwhelm him and he is persuaded
to do the right thing. Filmed on location including the docks
of New York and New Jersey, ON THE WATERFRONT
was considered to be an allegory to the controversial naming
names that director Elia Kazan had done in the 1950s.
Cinema Cocktails:
DEATH BECOMES HER (1992, 35mm)
Helen (Goldie Hawn) was once engaged to the successful plastic
surgeon, Ernest (Bruce Willis), until Madeline (Meryl FUCK-
ING Streep) swooped in and wooed Ernest away with her glitzy
celebrity lifestyle. After a nervous breakdown involving cats and
cake frosting, Helen vows her revenge to destroy Madeline and
win Ernest back. But this might prove to be more difcult than
she frst thought. You see both the ladies secretly discovered the
whacked-out sex goddess, Isabella Rosselini, who sells them a
potion to eternal youth and beauty, but what they didnt learn
is that eternal youth also means you cant die. Robert Zemeckis
(Back to the Future) directed this whackadoo dark comedy and
threw in every visual trick in his bag.
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO
MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948)
One of the top comedy teams of the last wazillion years embark
on a zanied-up tour of some non-Transylvanian destinations,
where they nevertheless run up against the most hair-raising as-
sortment of quasi-human creaturoids to ever spook up the silver
screen. I mean, sure, yes...they meet Frankenstein. But along
for the rampaging ride is none other than Lon Chaney as the
original Wolfman and the mega-menacing Bela Lugosi as the
Mighty Mayor of all Monsterdom: Count Dracula himself!
ABCs OF DEATH 2 (2014)
Tis movie is the follow-up to the most ambitious anthology
flm ever conceived with productions spanning from Nigeria to
UK to Brazil and everywhere in between. It features segments
directed by over two dozen of the worlds leading talents in
contemporary genre flm. Te flm is comprised of twenty-six
individual chapters, each helmed by a diferent director assigned
a letter of the alphabet. Te directors were then given free rein
in choosing a word to create a story involving death.
CANDYMAN (1992, 35mm)
In Bernard Roses stunning adaptation of Clive Barkers short
story, Tony Todd introduced a new horror icon to the pantheon
Candyman. Te ultimate boogeyman, Candyman is the
murdered son of a slave, his hand replaced with a hook and
his soul flled with hatred. Transformed into something larger,
Candyman becomes the focus of a young grad student (Virginia
Madsen) and, if shes not careful, the instrument of her doom.
CREEPSHOW (1982, 35mm)
Tis timeless 80s collaboration between zombie-meister Rome-
ro and money-liker Stephen King is arguably the most beloved
horror anthology of the last 50 years, a collision of top notch
Hollywood stardom and gut-munching comic book craziness. A
tribute to the old EC horror mags, this flm genuinely captures
everything that parents didnt want their kids to see in those
pages and throws it on the screen with conscience-free abandon.
AGFA Presents: DEATHDREAM (1972, 35mm)
Grieving parents Charles and Christine Brooks cant help but be
delighted when their son Andy, reportedly killed in Vietnam,
suddenly returns home. Tey dont mind that he looks sullen
and refuses to socialize. Even as he kills the family pooch with
his bare hands in front of the neighborhood children, they try
not to make a fuss. Andy ventures of at night and his vampiric
behavior increases, tearing the family to bits. DEATHDREAM
stands out as a truly chilling horror/drama with one of the most
haunting endings youll ever see.

sugar levels up, well be putting on a special ALL-SPOOKY

all-you-can-eat sugary cereal!
HALLOWEEN III:
SEASON OF THE WITCH (1981, 35mm)
One week before October 31, a mysterious corporation unveils
a series of adorable monster masks that are secretly devised
to transform children faces into a mass of gore and crawling
insects. Te one man sworn to stop the massacre is none other
than Tom Trill Me Atkins of NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
and MANIAC COP. So what if it has nothing to do with the
masked maniac that founded the famous series?
Video Vortex: HAUNTEDWEEN (1991)
Tickets only $1! Hosted by Matt Desiderio (Horror Boobs) and
Mike Hunchback (Seminal Psychosis). Bring your tapes! Well be set
up for a tape trade, with rare VHS tapes also available for sale.
Tis is the only slasher in history to combine Little Richard im-
pressions, a Danzig-meets-Morrissey theme song, Foot Locker
SLAM FEST! t-shirts, and a gore-soaked haunted house on
Halloween. In 1970, grade-schooler Eddie Burber impaled a girl
in his familys Halloween spookhouse. Twenty years later, the
bros of Sigma Pi fraternity re-open the house for a fundraiser.
Big mistake. Because grown-up Eddie dons a hobo mask and
turns his vengeful wrath on the customers of the haunted house.
HOCUS POCUS (1993, 35mm)
Tere have never been more fabulous witches than Bette Midler,
Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, which makes it hard to
remember that theyre the villains. Especially when Midler sings,
because she really can put a spell on you. But angsty teenager
Max (Omri Katz) and adorable little Dani (Tora Birch) are
worthy heroes, and how could you not root for a talking cat
named Tackery Binx? Mix all of these elements together, and
youve got a potion for a Halloween classic.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1986)
Rick Moranis is mild-mannered Seymour Krelborn, a down
on his luck employee at a plant shop in skid row whos in love
with Audrey (Ellen Greene), the unlucky in love girlfriend of
the most sadistic dentist in town. But everything changes when
he fnds a strange and unusual new plant that will only grow if
given a diferent sort of plant food people!
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2:
FREDDYS REVENGE (1985, 35mm)
Upon its release, audiences mistook this movie for another
quickie cash-grab sequel. Little did they realize that its actually
the single most powerful cinematic depiction of a young man
coming to terms with his latent homosexuality. Rather than
erections and/or rubdowns, said yearnings are incarnated as
none other than Freddy Krueger. Te horribly scarred, child-
murdering hero of the 1980s insists on coming out of our
hero at only the most inopportune times.
THE THING (1982)
Kurt Russells beautiful beard captains an all-star cast in John
Carpenters monster masterpiece of aliens, paranoia and sub-
zero temperatures. Twelve men have just discovered something.
For 100,000 years it was buried in the snow and ice, now it has
found a place to live...inside, where no one can see it, or hear
it...or feel it. THE THING is the ultimate in alien terror and
arguably John Carpenters greatest masterpiece.
