Well Control
The Basic Concept, in 5 Minutes
1. While drilling, mud is used to "sit on the formation pressures
encountered

2. Some formations encountered have abnormally high pressure

3. The BOP is used to temporarily retain pressure in the well.

4. .while mud is mixed to a heavier density to "sit on " the higher pressure
encountered

5. Need to pump the heavier mud down to the bottom of the well to "sit on"
the pressure while at the same time allowing only some of the light mud
out of the well bore

Overview of Drilling the Well
1) Wellheads
Due to the unconsolidated formations on the sea bottom the foundation for the
subsea BOP stack must be constructed in progressive manner. The tool used to
buildup the foundation are successive strings of casing attached below the subsea
wellhead. The table below identifies the typical casing strings and holes drilled in
order to run these casing strings :

2) Installation Of 30" Casing
The drilling process begins with installation of the 30" casing. There are 2 basic
methods to spud a well - drill-in or jet-in the 30" casing. The method depends upon
the operator's drilling procedures and the hardness of the shallow formations.
a) Drill-In 30" Casing-
In areas with hard, shallow sediments, a 36" hole is drilled and the 30" casing is
run and cemented. The first step in the drilling process is to set the temporary
guide base (TGB) this is some times called the mud mat. It has a large under
surface to help support the weight of the 30" casing and serves as an
attachment point for the guidelines. After setting the TGB on the rigs spider
beams and attaching guidelines, the TGB is run and landed on the seafloor with
drillpipe and a J-slot running tool. A utility tool or more often soft rope is then
used to center the 36'" bit between the guidelines while lowering it to the sea
bed. Drilling is conducted with returns to the sea floor. The 30 casing is made-
up with the 30" wellhead housing on the top joint. As the 30" casing is run
through the permanent guide base (PGB), supported on the spider beams, the
30" housing is landed in the PGB and latched into it. The PGB and 30"
structural pipe are then lowered on drillpipe to the ocean floor where the casing
Subsea Engineers Handbook Section 1
In-Spec Inc. 1999 7 Overview of Drilling the Well
is stabbed through the TGB and run in the hole until the gimbal on the PGB
bottoms out on the TGB cone. The 30" casing is then cemented with returns to
the sea floor.
b) Jet-In 30" Casing-
In areas where shallow sediments are soft, such as the Gulf of Mexico, the 30"
casing is jetted in place. Generally, 150 to 300 ft of 30 casing is made-up with a
30" wellhead housing welded on the last joint. The 30" cam actuated or
threaded running tool is made-up with all plugs removed into the 30" wellhead
housing. A bumper sub is usually placed directly above the 30" running tool.
The 30" pipe is lowered through both the PGB and mud mat located on the
spider beams. The 30" housing is landed and locked into the PGB. The PGB is
picked up so the mud mat can be attached with 4 - 8 ft posts to elevate the 30"
wellhead out of the jetted cuttings. Guidelines are attached to the mud mat and
threaded through the PGB guideposts. With this assembly still resting on the
spider beams, a jetting string is made-up and run inside the 30" casing. The jet
string consists of a mud motor backed up with stabilizers and drill collars. The
bit is usually located 12" to 18" up inside the bottom of the 30" casing.
c) Mud Mat-
After the jetting string is run inside the 30" casing and the 30" housing running
tool is engaged, the entire assembly is run to the sea bed to begin the jetting
operation. The jetting operation is stopped when the mud mat lands on the sea
floor and positive string weight is observed. The 30" housing running tool is
then released and retrieved along with the jetting string. Cementing is generally
not required as formation friction is sufficient to keep the 30" casing in place.
3) Installation of 20" Casing and High Pressure Wellhead
Drilling the hole for the 20" casing begins with running a 26" bit through the PGB
and into the 30" casing.
a) Drilling Without Returns to the Surface-
Drilling returns are usually taken onto the ocean floor unless conditions dictate
that returns must be conducted up to the rig. The bit is guided into the 30"
casing by a utility guide frame or with rope and shackles. In areas susceptible to
shallow gas, the hole may be drilled initially with a small diameter pilot bit and
then enlarged to 26". With a smaller diameter hole, less gas is allowed to
escape if it should be encountered.
b) Drilling With Returns to the Rig-
In situations requiring returns to the surface, such as when drilling on a multi
well template, a 30" pin connector is used. This is also called a 30" latch head.
The 30" pin connector connects on to the bottom joint of riser and is lowered on
Subsea Engineers Handbook Section 1
In-Spec Inc. 1999 8 Overview of Drilling the Well
to the 30" wellhead where it latches. Dump valves are usually placed on the 30"
latch head to allow flooding of the riser if it should be loaded with gas during a
kick. Due to the lack of suitable foundation under the 30" casing, the well can
not be closed in if a kick is encountered. The diverter is closed and the well
allowed to flow until it depletes itself. Diverting a kick is probably one of the
most dangerous operations on a drilling rig. An alternate action is to disconnect
the pin connector rather than attempting to divert the kick. The 26" hole is
displaced with gel-water and the bit pulled after the hole has reached the
required casing depth.
The 18 " 10,000 psi or 15,000 psi well head housing is installed on top of the
20" casing. The wellhead is designed with load rings to land on and ribbed
extensions to centralize it in the 30" wellhead. The wellhead is designed for the
required number of casing and tubing hangers to complete the well. Most
systems allow the use of 3 or 4 hangers. The upper connection of the wellhead
housing is designed to latch the connector of the subsea blowout preventer
stack. The Cameron wellhead and connector system use an AX gasket profile,
while the Vetco system uses the VX connector gasket and Dril Quip uses the DX
gasket. None of the gaskets are interchangeable.
The wellhead and 20" casing are lowered to the sea bed as an assembly with
the wellhead running tool on drill pipe latched into the wellhead. The shoe of the
20" casing is guided into the 30" wellhead with breakaway guide arms or with
rope and shackles. As the 20" high pressure wellhead lands in the 30" housing,
it latches in place becoming rigidly attached to the 30" wellhead housing. The
20" casing is cemented in place with returns taken to the sea floor.
After the 18 " wellhead is landed and cemented in place, the subsea BOP
stack can be run and drilling the 17 " hole for 13 5/8" casing can commence
with the protection of a BOP stack.

SMS-700 Subsea Wellhead System
18-3/4 - 15,000 psi version shown
ABB Vetco Gray engineers have developed a family of exceptional subsea wellhead systems designed for
high pressure, critical service, and deepwater drilling and production applications. Using state-of-the-art
engineeringtechnology, computer modeling, andrigorous testing, both inthelaboratory and inthe field, these
wellheads are designed to be simple, reliable and safe. Major emphasis was placed on an uncomplicated
system with passive load transfer, pre-energized all-metal sealing, single-trip weight-set operation,
redundant damage-tolerant seal systems, elimination of all running threads, and maximum operational
flexibility for bothdrilling andproductionprocedures.

An integral load shoulder in the wellhead housing and one on the
hanger bear on each other to distribute the extreme load. These
high-strength materials then redistribute the load over a wider 360
contact area to the H S service material of both the hanger and
housing. The hanger can simply land upon a conventional angular
shoulder and support the rated load. The MS-700 is certified at 7.1
million lb. capacity, that corresponds to 3.0 million lb. casing weight
and 15,000 psi full bore pressure. The hanger-to-housing interface
has been successfully tested to 8.0 million lb.

ReliableMetal Seals
The MS-1 Seal is fully pre-energized with drill pipe weight to over 15,000 psi and does not use pressure
energization to maintain the seal.
Both the wellhead housing and each hanger have a sealing area of parallel wickers, or V-grooves. After
the seal is positioned, it is set by forcing the energizing ring between the metal U seal, expanding it into
the wicker profiles. This expansion causes the wickers to bite into the softer metal of the seal, and imparts
energy into the hanger neck and housing body to preload each wicker interface higher than the rated
pressure. The biting action can fully seal, even with serious damage to both the seal and wickers. In
essence, a 1 inch wide band of wickers offers multiple independent metal seals which together form the
primary all-metal seal. This action yields a long term seal that cannot lose elastic energy due to
temperature extremes or exposure to corrosive fluids.
Intensive testing has validated that housing and hanger
wickers can withstand multiple seal settings and retractions
without impairing their sealing ability. The MS-1 seal
provides 1.0 million pounds of casing lock-down capacity to
counter thermal and pressure-induced upthrust loads.
To date, over 400 MS-700 Wellhead Systems have been
installed worldwide, with 98% of the seals setting the first
time.

The standard latch, rated for 2.5 million lbs. upward capacity, is used on
the 16-3/4" and standard 18-3/4" MS-700 wellhead systems, meeting all
load conditions for these applications. A bulk rubber O-ring is used to
ensure concentricity of the latch and achieve full capacity under all
conditions. This design can be disassembled in the yard for re-use of the
HP and conductor housings after plug and abandonment recovery.
The subsea releasable latch, rated for 4 million lbs. upward capacity, is
used on the latest generation high capacity 18-3/4" HC MS-700 and
SMS-700 wellhead systems. This design has been upgraded to meet
the demanding load requirements of the deepwater market. The bulk
rubber O-ring ensures that the latch reaches full rated capacity.

As drillingandproduction operations havemovedtoever deeper waters, theextremeenvironmental loading conditions have
led ABB Vetco Gray to develop the patented Tapered Socket wellhead interface. This design eliminates fatigue of the 20"
casing string by transmitting all axial and bending loads directly into the conductor housing. Introduced in 1991, the tapered
socket design has been proven to be technically superior in adverse
conditions, and has helped our customers meet the demanding
requirements of deepwater and applications.
One more pull on the drillstring releases the tool for
recovery to the surface, leaving the wellhead rated for maximum bending
loads andready for completion.
TLP Spar
When the High Pressure (HP) housing and 20" casing string are run, the
housing lands out and latches into the internal profile of the conductor
housing. At initial contact of the housings, full engagement is achieved at
the upper socket. As the rig slacks weight off the drillstring, the weight of
the 20" casing string displaces the HP housing downward until contact
occurs at the lower socket. The tapered socket interface design of the
housings provides highbendingloadcapacity for most applications.
For high current conditions or deepwater service, the Bootstrap tool may
be usedtofurther improve fatigueresistance. After thecasingis cemented
and the running tool is released from the housing, two simple overpulls of
the drillstring actuate the Bootstrap tool. The tool bootstraps the two
housings together with 1.2 million pounds of force to achieve full surface
contact at both tapered sockets, ensuring that all bending loads are
transmitted directly into the conductor housing and carried fully by the
conductor string.
A key feature of the tapered socket interface is the multi-step high-
capacity housing latch. These designs use a multiple step design to
achieve high capacities while using a minimum amount of space. The
standard latch can be retracted for disassembly of the wellhead after the
HPhousingandconductor housing have beenpluggedandabandonedas aunit.
To help meet the demanding requirements of the deepwater market, ABB Vetco Gray incorporated the features of the
standard latch into a high capacity releasable design which can be retracted and recovered subsea. This feature gives our
customers the capability to recover HP housings after they have been bootstrapped and improves flexibility during
abandonment operations.

CasingHangers
The standard casing hanger family consists of a range of hanger sizes which interface to the 18-3/4" High
Pressure (HP) wellhead housing. The most common sizes are 13-3/8", 9-5/8" and 7", with other casing sizes
available. The hanger transfers casing weight and pressure test loads into the HP housing, allows cement
return flow-by during cementing, provides external seal surfaces for the MS-1 seal, internal seal surfaces for
tool, tubing hanger, andtieback interfaces.

The ABB Vetco Gray 16" Below Mudline hanger system was
originally introduced in 1981 to provide a contingency back-up for
the 20" casing string. The system has been through a series of
improvements since that time to meet increasing requirements from
the field, culminating in the two versions now available. The 16"
casing system has seen widespread use for exploration,
deepwater, and shallow flow applications to provide an
intermediate casing string after the 20" casing has been run.
ABBVetco Gray alsomanufactures casinghangersin 20, 24 and 26 sizes with either anMS-1metal seal or
a high integrity bulkrubber seal. These casing hangers are used when additional casing strings are required
by well conditions, as well as for the containment of Shallow Water Flow(please see page 11).These casing
hangers are run below the wellhead housings to isolate different zones in a formation. Proper placement of

The Wear Bushing Running
and Retrieval Tool is a spear-
type tool which is used to run
and retrieve wear bushings
and nominal seat (bore)
protectors, with the added
capability to test the BOP
stack in one trip. The design
uses tapered casing slips
which expand and grip the
bore of the wear bushing as
the stem is pulled. A spring
preloads the slips to ensure a
positive grip when a wear
bushing is run down the riser
and through the BOP stack.
The casing slips are easily
changed on the rig to outfit
the tool for either the wear
bushing or the nominal seat
protector profile.
The Clean and Flush

MUDLINE
ShallowWater FlowOptions
ShallowWater Flow
Shallow Water Flow (SWF) is a geological phenomenon which is encountered more frequently as operators increasingly
explore the deepwater environment. These SWF zones are typically several hundred to several thousand feet below
mudline. Penetration of these pressurized zones can seriously de-stabilize the well foundation, impact cementing
operations, and cause breakdown of the near-surface strata.
The four systems below show different options within the MS-700 product family for containment of shallow flow. The
equipment shown in each configuration offers different operational and functional advantages for sealing SWF zones.
ABB Vetco Gray offers custom-designed wellhead systems based on these components to meet the requirements of
single or multiple zone applications.
The gives
the operator efficient shut-
off control of the conductor
housing ports following
cementing of the 20"
casing string.
Flow Sleeve The design
offers an alternative to the
flow sleeve. The ball
valves are manually
closed with the ROV
following cementing of the
20" casing.
Ball Valve
The design
uses an MS-1 seal and casing
hanger below mudline to seal
the shallow flow zone. The
lower section of the 20 casing
penetrates the SWF zone and is
landed and cemented. The High
Pressure housing joint has a
20 Seal Stab at the lower end
which stabs into the top of the
20 hanger with elastomer lip
seals, effectively resulting in a
continuous 20 casing bore.
Split 20" Casing The
design adds an additional low
pressure conductor housing and
short conductor string. The
primary conductor housing is run
and cemented, with the cement
shoe just above the SWF zone. A
24" or 26" intermediate casing
string and hanger are then run to
penetrate and seal the shallow
flow zone with an MS-1 metal seal
or high-integrity bulk rubber seal.
Nested Conductor Housing
Because deepwater exploration and shallow water flow
phenomenon are new problems in the frontier stages of
understanding, these disciplines are customer driven
and have evolved rapidly.
ABB Vetco Gray has taken a broad approach to solving
these problems, branching out from just manufacturing
equipment to working with our customers to understand
the geology and to develop advanced new technologies
based on requirements from the field.

HighPressure/ HighTemperatureApplications
The MS-700 Family of Subsea Wellhead Systems incorporate a number of features, as well as optional
equipment, tomeet the difficult conditions of HighPressure/HighTemperature(HP/HT) critical service.
As drilling in many regions has reached deeper and older reservoirs, more wells have been completed
which have both high pressure and high temperature requirements. This has led to a variety of increased
technical requirements in designing wellhead equipment for this application. The MS-700 wellhead
system has a number of features as well as optional equipment to meet the difficult conditions of HP/HT
service.
The high production temperatures in this application have created
reliability problems for many annulus seal designs. The MS-1
annulus seal is uniquely suited to HP/HT wells, with 100% all
metal construction and multiple sealing wickers providing the
temperature and well fluid resistance to ensure the highest levels
of reliability in this service. The MS-1 seal has been qualified for
use in 15,000 psi systems with continuous temperatures of 350
deg F.
The high well pressures have led to significant increases in
casing weights and loads to handle the high pressures. The
frequent presence of H2S in these older reservoirs requires lower
casing grades which increase casing weights further. ABB Vetco
Gray has responded by developing the HCCH casing hanger,
which is available in 7-5/8" and 9-5/8" sizes. This special casing
hanger transmits axial loads through split load ring directly into an
internal profile of the HP housing, thus allowing higher casing
loads for the 13-3/8" and 10-3/4" casing strings.
A 4-hanger version of the MS-700 High Pressure (HP) Housing is
used in HP/HT applications to accommodate the additional
casing strings used to reach the deep reservoirs. This gives the
customer greater flexibility in changing his casing program to
meet unexpected downhole conditions. The 4-hanger housing
also allows use of a casing hanger Lockdown Sub. In contrast to
the HCCH hanger which transmits loads downward into the
housing, the Lockdown sub carries upward loads due to thermal
expansion of casing subjected to high well temperatures. This
design eliminates cyclic loading of sealing elements due to
temperature fluctuations to further enhance the reliability of the
seal in corrosive environments for long term production
applications.

High Capacity Casing Hanger (HCCH) was developed by ABB Vetco Gray
to accommodate higher casing load requirements of deep, high pressure
and sour gas wells. Available in 7-5/8 and 9-5/8 sizes, these casing hange s
t ransmit axial loads through a split load ring directly into an internal profile
of the High Pressure housing.
4-Hanger MS-700 Wellhead System can be used in HP/HT applications to accommodate the additional casing strings
required for deep wells. This system also allows for greater flexibility in the casing program to meet unexpected downhole
conditions.
A may be used in the 4-Hanger MS-700 wellhead system. In contrast to the HCCH hanger, the Lockdown
Sub carries an upward load to combat upward movement of the casing due to thermal expansion. The design of the
Lockdown Sub eliminates cyclic loading of the sealing elements due to temperature fluctuations and further enhances the
reliability of the seal in corrosive environments for long term production applications.

MS-700TiebackSystems
The , which locks and seals the
tieback casing strings to the subsea wellhead, permits wells
to be completely drilled from a floating vessel and then tied
back to a platform, reducing the time it takes to get production
on-line. An added benefit is that the casing strings are hung at
the mudline, thereby reducing the load and weight
requirements of the platform.
As drill ing activity in the environment has moved
from predominantly exploration to production capabil ity, ABB
Vetco Grays MS-700 wellhead system has evolved to
accommodate production equipment more directly, easily and
economically. The tieback systems take full advantage of the
features found in the MS-700 wellhead by provi ding:
Ametal-to-metal pre-energized seal system ideal for
applications where long term, gas-tight, high-pressure
sealing is required.
Stab-type operation with the field-proven, award-
winning, industry standard alignment features.
MS-700 Tieback System
deep water
In addi tion to the standard tieback equipment, several options
exist to tailor the tieback system to meet specific applicati ons.
Two of the major options are the Big Bore 20 Tieback
Adapter and the Full Bore 20 Tieback Adapter.
In situations where the drilling program requires a larger
through-bore, these options allow the 13-3/8 casing to be
drilled out through the 20 tieback connector. The full bore
option, with a through-bore of 18-5/8, also allows for the
retrieval of the subsea casing strings.
