Any operation carried out on a well during or at the end of its productive
life, which alters the state of the well and/or well geometry, provides well
diagnostics, or manages the production of the well.
Types of well Intervention?
 Pumping
 Slick line
 Snubbing
 Work over
 Coiled tubing
 Wire line
What is Coiled Tubing?

“Continuously-milled tubular product that is

straightened prior to being inserted into the wellbore
and is recoiled for spooling back on to the reel.”
Application of Coiled Tubing?
 Mechanical  Work over (Pumping)

 Cementing  Removing sand or fill from a

 Fishing wellbore
 Perforating  Fracturing/acidizing a formation
 Logging  Unloading a well with nitrogen
 Scale removal (mechanical)  Gravel packing
 Cutting tubular (mechanical)  Cutting tubular with fluid
 Running a completions  Pumping slurry plugs
 straddles for zonal isolation  Zone isolation (to control flow
 Drilling profiles
 Setting a plug or packer  Scale removal (hydraulic)
 Removal of wax
 Hydrocarbon or hydrate plugs
Coiled Tubing Unit:
The coiled tubing unit is comprised of the complete set of equipment
necessary to perform standard continuous-length tubing operations in
the field.

The unit consists of five basic elements:

 Reel
 Injector Head
 Control Cabin
 Power Pack
 BOP
Reel:
❑ For storage and transport of the CT
Reel Consists of
 Reel drum
 Reel drive and brake system
 Level wind assembly
 Depth counter
 Lubrication system
 Reel swivel and manifold
Injector Head
 To provide the surface drive force
to run and retrieve the CT

 The equipment that performs

these operations is grouped into the
following systems:

1- Drive and brake system

2- Chain assembly
3- Traction and tension system
4- Guide arch system.

areas
well control
drive chain traction and tension
injector motion and direction
reel motion and direction
engine remote control
system monitoring.

Instrument scanning
Power Pack
o Prime mover is usually an
engine
o Provides hydraulic &
pneumatic power
through a system of
pumps, valves, and lines
to operate the CTU.

Stripper
The stripper provides
the primary operational
seal between pressurized
wellbore fluids and the
surface environment
❑ It is physically
located between the
BOP and the injector
head.
❑ The stripper provides
a dynamic seal
around the CT
during tripping and a
static seal around the
CT when there is no
movement.

Blowout preventer
The BOP is used to contain wellbore pressure. A CT BOP is
designed specifically for CT operations

The four BOP rams, from top to bottom and their associated
functions are:

Blind ram - seals the wellbore when the

CT is out of the BOP
Shear ram - used to cut the CT
Slip ram - supports the CT weight hanging
below it
Pipe ram - seals around the hanging CT

Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA):
Coiled Tubing BHA includes:
 Connectors
 Check Valves
 Disconnects
 Circulation valve
 Nozzles
 Quick Connects.
Connecter
The main function of a connector
is to attach the CT string to
various down hole tools. It must
mechanically hold and seal on the
CT string and provide a
threaded connection to connect
down hole tools below it
Check valves

 The function of a check valve is to

prevent wellbore fluids from
entering the CT string, while
allowing fluid pumped through the
CT string to enter the wellbore.
Disconnect tools
 A disconnect in a CT BHA
provides a means of releasing
from the lower BHA in a
controlled manner
Circulation valve

 A circulation valve in a CT BHA

provides a means of opening
circulation ports in a controlled
manner. Circulation ports can be
used to provide additional flow
area (and therefore allow higher
pump rates) in many types of
applications
Quick connects

 A quick connect is a tool designed to assist

with making up tool strings, where it is
difficult to rotate the tools to engage the
threads.
Centralizers

Centralizers are fitted to or are included in a

CT tool string to help keep the tool or nozzle
away from the tubular wall; that is, the
