Integrated Leadership Camp

*he +ee,end of 27-29th July this year +ill foreer be etched in the minds of the -.
participants +ho attended the !nte'rated /eadership (amp or'anised by the (o-curricular
)nit of !nstitut Per'uruan #ultan $bdul %alim, Kedah.*he t+o-day t+o ni'ht camp, held at
Perimbun Resort, Kedah, some 2. miles a+ay from the city centre, +as a compulsory
actiity for all presidents and secretaries of the arious clubs in !nstitut. *he ob0ecties of the
camp +ere to instil leadership 1ualities and improe team+or, amon' participants. $lthou'h
the students +ere accompanied by seeral teachers, all actiities +ere conducted by youth
leaders from a local uniersity. 2ost of the students, +ho are in !P", +ere ery e3cited
throu'hout the 4--minute 0ourney to the campsite. )pon arrial, they +ere immediately
+his,ed off to the seminar room +here they +ere 'ien a briefin' on the rules and
re'ulations at the campsite by the facilitators. *hen, they +ere put into 'roups of fie and
as,ed to erect their o+n tents. /uc,ily for my 'roup, +e had the President of the #couts
(lub +ith us. !n no time, he had instructed us on ho+ to put up the tent. )nfortunately, some
of the other 'roups +ere stru''lin' +ith their tents and seein' their dismal efforts some of us
decided to help them. $pparently, this +as the first test of our team+or, s,ills and
fortunately, many of us passed +ith flyin' colours. $fter dinner, +e had a 'roup dynamics
actiity, +here +e had to come up +ith names, lo'os and 0in'les for our 'roups. 5ell, +ith
names li,e the 6lyin' Potters and 6oreer Dumble dores, and 0in'les ran'in' from pop roc,
to 0a77, the students of !P" #ultan $bdul %alim proed that they are indeed a creatie lot.
*he second day of the camp started off +ith an early mornin' e3ercise session at -.8.am.
*he t+o ener'etic facilitators, *im and $shraf, too, us throu'h a ri'orous e3ercise routine.
2any of us +ho barely e3ercise ,ne+ +hat to e3pect oer the ne3t fe+ days 9 muscle
cramps. $fter the one-hour aerobic session, +e 0o''ed throu'h Perimbun to+n, +hich +as a
pale shado+ of its daytime hustle and bustle. *he early mornin' e3ercise +as ini'oratin'
and refreshin'. 5e had enou'h time for a 1uic, sho+er and brea,fast, before +e too, part
in more 'roup actiities. *hese actiities +ere physically and mentally challen'in'. &ne of
the actiities +as basic surial s,ills. 5e had to start our o+n fires +ith only t+o
matchstic,s and coo, lunch for the 'roup members. )sin' +ater from the sli'htly muddy
stream nearby, +e had to coo, not only rice but also fish and e'etables. $s no soap +as
made aailable to us, +e learnt to +ash the coo,in' utensils usin' ash. /ater in the
afternoon, +e had actiities li,e flyin' fo3 and abseilin'. *hrou'h these actiities, +e learnt
to trust each other and to 'ie moral support +hen it is most needed. *he hi'hli'ht of the
camp +as a ni'ht hi,e in the surroundin' 0un'le. *he facilitators led us deep into the 0un'le
and made us sit all by ourseles. *he half hour spent alone +as aimed at ma,in' us brae
and resilient. *hou'h many of us +ere initially hesitant and sceptical about this actiity, it
+as indeed an insi'htful e3perience. &n the final mornin', +e had a hearty brea,fast, +hich
+as follo+ed by a feedbac, session. Durin' this session, +e +ere 'ien the opportunity to
oice our feelin's and opinions re'ardin' the camp. 2any of the participants 'ae
constructie feedbac, on +hat the camp had tau'ht them. 5e learnt about the importance of
team+or,, consideration, tolerance and understandin'. 2ost importantly, +e learnt that 'ood
leadership is responsible leadership.
