Que. 1 The purpose describes the task of a technical product solution-neutrally:
Kind of product = f (purpose)
Provide the purpose of the technical systems in the table below.
PRODUCT PURPOSE
Car (not race car or special purpose car)
Lawn mower
Telephone
Power outlet
Drilling machine
Copier
Thermos bottle
Ball bearing
Que. 2 Under which category can one place the strength of a material when considering the
main engineering requirements of materials?
A. Economic requirement
B. Fabrication requirement
C. Aesthetic requirement
D. Service requirement
E. None
Que. 3 During forging the material is mainly subjected to compression forces. Which property
will determine the suitability of your material for the forging process?
A. Ductile
B. Hard
C. Tough
D. Stiff
E. Malleable
Que. 4 For the construction of platform for a gari production plant, it was recommended
that square-sectional cold rolled steel should be used as horizontal frames. There
are two materials. St37-2 and St50-2, of that sectional type. Deduce the cost-
strength relationship and determine the more suitable material on that basis.

Que.5 A two cylinder two-stroke petrol engine has a cylinder bore of 100mm and a
piston stroke of 130mm. The engine develops 53kW at 2500rpm when coupled to
a dynamometer. At the same speed and with the fuel shut-off', the engine required
a 9.3kW to motor it (to overcome friction) During the test when 53kW was
developed the engine used 18.5lit/h of No.3 diesel fuel. The fuel contained 30MJ
of heat per litre. Calculate:
i. Engine indicated power.
ii. Indicated mean effective pressure.
iii. Net engine efficiency.
iv. Indicated thermal efficiency, and
v. Rejected heat.
