V. DRILLING WORKS - SOIL SAMPLING AND FIELD TESTING
V-1. Drilling and Soil Sampling
Drilling totally 03 boreholes BS1, BS2 and BS3. Borehole location were given by
Client and shown in Appendix 1 Boreholes location plant drawing.
Boring work was performed using rotary drilling rigs of XY-1 (Made in China).
The rotary drilling with bentonite flushing method shall be used for this purpose.
Borehole diameter is 110.0mm.
Undisturbed samples were collected from borehole and all strata encountered.
Undisturbed samples were taken by using thin-walled sampler of 80.0mm diameter and
0.50m length. It is performed by driven or hydraulic pressure methods. The interval of
sampling is 2.0m, starting from a depth of 1.0m. Immediately after removal from the
hole, the obtained sample was visually examined, identified, described according to the

trimming from the top and bottom ends of the tube and carefully sealed with paraffin
wax and labeled.
Disturbed samples collected in all strata of boring. Disturbed samples were
accomplished using split-barrel sampler of Standard Penetration Test. The average
interval of sampling is 2.0m. After removal of the sample from the borehole, sample
is measured and visually examined, packed, marked and stored in thick plastic bags
and identified and described in borehole log.

V-2. Standard Penetration Test SPT
The purpose of the test is to determine stiffness or compactness of the soil layers by
measuring N-value and to obtain the representative samples of each layer.
The test shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D1586 (Standard Test Method
for Penetration Test and Split Barrel Sampling of Soil).
Type of China equipment shall be used for this test.
The penetration resistance is expressed as the number of blows of a 63.5kg hammer
freely dropping 76.0mm to force the standard split-spoon sampler to penetrate 45.0cm into
soil. The number of blows for each 15.0cm penetration is recorded. N-value is recorded as
total of blows of 30.0cm last penetration.
The test is performed at 2.0 meter intervals of depth.
The samples obtained in the split-spoon sampler shall be inspected on soil type, color,
and other descriptive items and labeled, preserved in polyethylene bags (disturbed
samples).

VI. OBSERVATION OF GROUND WATER LEVEL
After at least 24 hours from the time borehole was completed, underground water level
was measured and recorded.

VII. LABORATORY TESTINGS
Laboratory testings shall be basically carried out in accordance with ASTM Standard.
They are grouped as follows:
- Visual and hand examination of samples
- Soil classification tests.
- Soil strength tests.
- Soil deformation tests.

VII.1. Visual and hand examination of samples
After being opened, the samples shall be examined visually and by hand for
preliminary description and selection of appropriate laboratory test.

X. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
FINAL REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION
PROJECT: DETAIL DESIGN OF 20.000T SKID WAY USED FOR BIEN DONG AND OTHER OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS PROJECTS

NAM BO GEOLOGY CORPORATION LABORATORY LAS XD 423 Page 10

- Based on the above- mentioned data the investigation was executed all works as the
contract document, we would like to had some conclusions:
- The relief of site is flat and the site is wide and nearby the national road, so it is
suitable to carry out construction works and to transport equipment and material.
- The sedimentary soil detected in the area consists of sand, the engineering condition
is high loading.
- Layer 1 is very weak loading capacity so it is not useful for all construction projects.
- The others layer: 2, 3, 4, 5 have the capacity loading is change from medium to high.
- Arcoriding to the loading of the project which choose layers FAT CLAY-CLAY (CH)
(layer 3), CLAYEY - SILTY SAND (SC-SM) (layer 4) or SAND (layer 5) to the main
foundation of the project.
