What a wonderful week

we have had! I love the

beautiful fall weather,
crisp mornings and lower
humidity. With such
wonderful fall
days it is a
great oppor-
tunity to get
outside. Yes-
terday, we did
just that as
we celebrated
Walk to
School Day.
Many of our
families took advantage
of the nice weather and
walked to school. How-
ever, for most of our stu-
dents, walking or biking
to school is dangerous.
In an effort to allow all
students the opportunity
to participate we had a
Walk AT School event.
Students spent 15
minutes walking in the
bus loop following their
related arts classes. It
was a fun time to get
some fresh air and exer-
cise.
In case you were won-
dering, International
Walk to School Day is a
global event that in-
volves communities from
more than 40 countries
walking and biking to
school on the same day.
It began in 1997 as a
one day event. Yester-
day, thousands of
schools across America
- from all 50 states, the
District of Columbia, and
Puerto Rico - participat-
ed.
I hope you will take time
to get outside and enjoy
the beautiful weather or
maybe visit the State
Fair. Whatever you de-
cide to do, I hope you
have a wonderful week-
end.

absences.
Morning announce-
ments begin at 7:40
am. Students arriving
after 7:45 am are
counted tardy.
All early dismissals
must be called from
class before 2:15 pm.

. The Cognitive Abilities Test
(CogAT) will be administered in
District Five to all second and
fourth grade students. Fourth
graders will be testing on se-
lected days during the weeks of
October 21 and October 28.
Your childs homeroom teacher
will notify you of specific testing
dates. Fourth grade testing will
be done in our computer lab.

Second graders will be tested
October 28-30, 2014 in their
classrooms.

CogAT is a norm-referenced test
that measures important verbal,
non-verbal and quantitative rea-
soning skills such as the ability
to comprehend problem situa-
tions, detect similarities and
differences, make inferences and
deductions, classify and catego-
rize objects, events and other
stimuli, create and adapt prob-
lem-solving strategies and use
familiar concepts and skills in
new contexts.

The State of South Carolina has
established three dimensions of
giftedness as criteria for place-
ment in the academically gifted
program. In order to qualify for
placement in gifted/talented
programs, a student must meet
the eligibility criteria in TWO
out of the following three dimen-
sions: Dimension A-Aptitude,
Dimension B- Achievement and
Dimension C- Academic Perfor-
mance. The CogAT Aptitude test
will be administered to grades 2 and
4 to fulfill the requirements of Di-
mension A- Aptitude. Students may
be eligible for placement on the
basis of aptitude scores alone if
they score at or above the 96th na-
tional age percentile on the compo-
site score.

Please ensure that your child is here
on testing days and is on time.
Please do not schedule any appoint-
ments for your child prior to 11:00
on testing days. Also please do your
best to prepare your child by having
your child get a good nights rest
and a nutrious breakfast on these
testing days.

Is It a Cold or the Flu?
The cold and flu are both
respiratory illnesses, but
they are caused by dif-
ferent types of viruses
with different symptoms.
Use this chart to learn
the difference between the two.

Remember: prevention starts
with handwashing!

Here are a few simple
handwashing tips to
make sure your hands
are clean and stop the
spread of germs:
Wet hands under running
warm water
Generously apply soap
and rub to make a lather
Spread soap all over your
hands especially between
fingers and around nails
Wash hands for 15 seconds
or the amount of time it
takes to slowly sing the
ABC or Happy Birthday
song
Rinse hands well under
warm, running water.

Dry hands with a paper
towel
To avoid getting sick, wash
up quick!
