DRUG ME DOWN

An original screenplay by
<SOPHIE DUNSBY and MICHAEL EGBE>

EXT. MARSH LANE EVENING

17 yr-old student Katherine is running along the
marsh pathway, clearly out of breath, the sounds
of her heavy breathing and other surrounding
sounds dwindle as a voice over of her parents is
heard

KATHERINES MOTHER (voice over)
I cant even recognise you anymore. Youre never
home, you dont eat right, youre a complete mess
at school What are you doing with your life?

KATHERINES FATHER (voice over)
Katherine, whats going on?

The voice over of her parents continue from
snippets of talks with Katherine (though
Katherines voice is not heard yet and there is
no mention of DRUGS), overlapping each other,
until theyre overtaken by Katherines thoughts

KATHERINE
I cant remember the last time my parents told me
well done. Its funny; I used to hear it
constantly. It was always well done when I got
home from school, well done when I did my
homework, well done when I got marked on a
test It was sort of their way of saying I love
you they never told me that. Not even before
everything turned into a mess.

INT. SCHOOL CLASSROOM MORNING

Scene fades from Katherine running to a
flashback; sounds of chatter are heard, normal
classroom noises, focused on Katherine sitting
alone with a pile of textbooks and writing notes.
She doesnt notice a disheveled, scruffy-looking
18 yr-old CLAY - standing near her, until the
scruffy teen shoves her books off so he can sit
on her desk

KATHERINE
Excuse me. . . youre sitting on my work.

CLAY
What? Oh. . . Whore you?

KATHERINE
My names Katherine. . . and yes.

CLAY
(Imitates: Katherine in a high-pitched posh
voice, laughing)
You need to loosen up, Kat. Names Clay. Wanna
ditch class, meet some people?

Katherine looking unsure, Clay grabs her hand
without her decision and ditches textbooks

EXT. END OF MARSH PARK MORNING
FLASHBACK #1

Clay introduces Katherine to group of teens; all
dressed in similar style to Clay, most are
holding cigarettes. When they notice Clay with
Katherine, they give an odd look but Clay offers
her a cigarette. She shakes her head. Katherine
is clearly different from the rest of the group.
The scene is presented through actions of the
characters, while a voice-over takes place.

KATHERINE (voice over during scene)
I guess it wouldnt be fair if I blamed Clay for
the way I turned out. But it started with him.
They were the type of people I never imagined
myself being friends with. I never had friends
before, my parents had high expectations from me
so did I really have time for friends?

INT. CLAYS HOUSE NIGHT

The group of friends is at Clays house,
partying, all have drinks and cigarettes. The
music is loud; everybody is talking, generally
hanging around the house. Katherine is more
included within the group now; her style has
changed, shes laughing and joining in with the
group. The music is quieter when a friend, JANE,
asks Katherine something.

JANE
Hey. Try one.

KATHERINE
(trying to laugh it off, but looks uneasy)
What? Try what?

JANE
Its just a fag. Try it.

CLAY

Jane, she doesnt want to.

JANE
Since when do you care about anyone?
(Clay shrugging off what Jane said, no longer
paying attention)

SAM
Look! Ive got, like, three at the same time!
(shows off, everyone else laughing, Katherine
taking one that Jane is offering)

KATHERINE
Okay. . . Fine. Whats the big deal?
(looking at the cigarette, she places it between
her lips. Scene fades)

INT. SAMS HOUSE AFTERNOON

The group (except Katherine) Sam reveals a bag of
cocaine while others look on. Katherine soon
enters the room, looks nervous once she realises
what theyre about to do. The friends are all
calling Katherine closer, she looks hesitant but
she does what they say.

SEVERAL FLASH SNIPPETS OF DRUG USE (in each
snippet, one less person from the group is there,
until shes left alone)

FADE TO BLACK SCREEN:

6 MONTHS LATER

EXT. SHELLEY ROAD EVENING

Katherine is walking along Shelley road, looking
desperate. Katherine is suffering from withdrawal
symptoms: pushing people out of the way,
scratching arms, and breathing heavily. Katherine
sees Sam, and desperately approaches him. Sam is
dressed in a smart outfit armed with textbooks.

KATHERINE
(grabs arm)
You gotta get me some! Last time, I-I swear!

SAM
Katherine? Whats happened to you? Are you still.
. . on it?

KATHERINE
(ignores question)
Where is it? . . . I just want one more hit.

SAM
Sorry, Kat, Im out of that business. Youve got
to figure your life out, Im done.
(starts walking away)

KATHERINE
(following, grabbing shirt)
Please, Sam, Im begging you. Just one more!

SAM
Kat, you have to get some help. Go to the
hospital, you look really bad.

KATHERINE
I dont need any help! I just want one more hit!
Just give it!

SAM
(turns to walk away, but Katherine grabs him)
Get off of me! You druggie! Im gonna be late!

KATHERINE
(under breath: please, please. . . just one
more, please, though Sam continues to walk away)

Katherine stumbles, scratching arms, different
shots of her walking towards Glanville road,
ending up to the Marsh lane, and starts
hallucinating, and runs. Scene fades to black.
