582 HISTORY OF WARREN COUNTY.
and destroyed the power, about the year 1809. A long litigation ensued and
the case was finally decided in the Supreme Court against Haines.
John Jennings came to the township in 1810, and bought the mill and se
cured an abutment on the east side against the rugged bank, for $200, and
contracted with David Brown to extend the race for $300. Brown completed
the race, but lost heavily on the contract. The mill was idle about six years,
durincr which time the principal milling of the neighborhood was done at New-
man's^mill on the Run, and Highway's mill on the Miami. Asaw-mill and a
fulling-mill were there at an early day and carding and fulling done there
imtil about 1850.
The brickmill was built in 1825 by John Jennings, and, about 1832, was
sold by hiTTi to Stephen Cook and Jason Evans. Evans became the sole owner,
and, in 1840, sold the mills with the lands, lots, dwelling^, etc., to William
Oliphant, of New Jersey, for $14,000. It was regarded as a good sale at the
v/^time. Oliphant died, and his sons sold out and settled up and returned to
^ New Jersew.
In the year 1831, James Elliott built a grist-mill ir^ediately below
Waynesville; he also built a saw-mill andwoolen-mill, in which carding, spin
ning andfulling were done. The premises were sold to Asa Trahern, about
1842, for $5,000; it passed through various hands, and, in i860, became the
property of Sidwell Taylor, who built the present mill.
There have been long law-suits at different times with Elliott and Taylor
by theowners of the upper mills for damages on account of back-water. Cook
&Evans prosecuted Elliott for damages onaccount of, back-water, and, after a
long litigation, obtained a judgment against him, probably in1888, for $109.
The mill-power at Mount Holly was first improved by Joseph Chenoweth,
who came from Virginia about the year 1815, by putting in a dam and saw
mill. Agrist-mill was built there by John Satterthwaite about 1818. Mills
have been kept up there ever since. There is evidence to. show that Banes
improved this power very early in the present century.
About 1816, Joseph Chenoweth bnilt a grist and saw mill on Middle
Bun, some distance below where the tnmpike crosses; they were only used a
few years and were abandoned for the purposes for which they were built.
The Hisey mill property, on Cae'sar's Creek, was first improved by Benjamin
Butterworth, by building a saw-mill there about 1822. Israel Woodruff after
ward became the owner and built a grist-nnll there about 1834. The mills
afterward became theproperty of C. Hisey, but have long since ceased to be
used.
I amtmable to state whofirst improved the property on the creekat a point
called New Baltimore, but Joshua Canby was the owner in 1835, and did a
large business there with a grist and saw mill. The power is only used now
for a saw-mill, by John Stanfield, who has been inpossession for the past fifteen
years. Saw-mills have otherwise been built, one by Isaac Ward, on Neivman s
Run, near the crossing of the Tipper Springboro road, in 1816; one by Evans
&Elliott on the same stream, near the Lebanon pike, about 1848; one by San^
uel Butterworth onthe west branch of the same stream, in 1850; one byJoseph
Rogers, Sr., on IVliddle Run, about 1818, and one by his son Joseph, near the
same place, about 1823.
OFFICERS.
There are no records that can be found of township officers previous to
1816. Early Justices of the Peace, so far as can leamthem, were as follows:
JohnBuckels in 1803; I think he was a Justice un. crthe Territorial ornaniza-
tion; he settled and lived on Section 26, Town 3, Range 5; David Pngh,
1805; Jonathan Newman, 1807; John Satterthwaite, most of the time from

Mr. Allen C. Jennings
124 E. Yates Avenue
Findlay, Ohio 45840
Dear Allen:
WAYNESVILLE. OHIO 45068
July 30, 1985
I am so happy to hear from you. I was beginning to think that you were possibly
ill or some castrophe had struck.
I too have had a busy summer and it seems that summer is over. I am trying to
tie up some loose ends before my vacation which starts August 5 and I*m not sure
at this point if 1*11 finish them or they'll finish me.
I took on two free-lance research/writing jobs (historical) this summer and have
neither finished and they should've been finished by first of June. The research
is holding me up. I have run into so many dead ends. Some things just have to
come in their own time I guess.
I have been busy with a large vegetable garden and my backyard. Both have required every
bit of extra time I have but I have enjoyed them. Have also been trying to do some
research on historical varieties of vegetable, flowers and trees from this area.
I copied out the information you needed but wasn't sure I had the right Jacob since
several are listed in the book. The book should also list your father and grandfather
and again I couldn't remember names and I have your letters put away and can't
put my hands on them at the moment. I copied the line that includes John and his
son Jacob S. and Rebecca Clark Jennings Harris. Ran into a mystery. When I got the
line up as far as John and Sarah Hopkins Jennings and children the genealogy numbers
beside the names were all missing from the book. For instance Jaoob S., son of John,
is number 2027 but there is no such number. The bookruns "2021, 2022, 2033" and
John's children' numbers are 2024-2034. All pages are in book and have checked page
numbers. I am really confused. I wanted to see who Jacob S. married and follow his
line. I may unravel this yet so if I do I will send you the copies. Hope what I am
sending is correct. Please give me the info again. I also copied out William Jennings
Bryan material.
I am sorry that we can't get the family tour together for this year but I do understand
Genealogy is a time consuming project. The tour will be fine for next year. Those
who live in the Jennings houses still will welcome you and maybe by next year I'll
have even more Jennings info to share. I have the Jennings book on long term loan.
It belongs to a woman I have known all my life and we" were also schoolmates.
Take care and let me know about material if it is correct or not etc.
