NOVEMBER ~ Special Opening Month Activities
Ribbon Cutting Saturday, November 1 is our first official day open to the
public. Join us at 12 noon for a special ceremony to mark the beginning of what is sure to be
a legacy paying homage to the pristine waters of the Port Royal Sound. Our normal operating
schedule will be 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesdays thru Saturdays; but only on THIS day can you
claim to have been at the Maritime Center on its opening day! And you can visit us as often
as you like, because every day were open (not just this inaugural day) admission to the
Center is free.
Talks & Tours Thursday, November 6 will offer a glimpse of the Maritime
Centers future programming. Throughout the day, short talks will be given by area experts.
Theres a little something for almost everyone. Arrive early to guarantee a seat first come,
first serve.
10:00 a.m. Lowcountry Photography
World class photographer Eric Horan will speak about capturing all the beauty the
Lowcountry has to offer. Mr. Horan is considered one of the Lowcountrys premier wildlife
and nature photographer and offers Photography Safaris. If you cant make the talk be
sure to check out his exhibit on display in the Maritime Center.
11:00 am. 11:00 a.m. Landscape & Gardening (withaSoundMind)
Curious about landscaping and gardening in the Lowcountry? Whether its about
designing a landscape, creating buffer zones, plants native to the Lowcountry, or
gardening in general we can answer your questions. Get answers from the people behind
the Maritime Centers gardens: Michael Brock, Mark Dixon, and Laura Lee Rose.
2:00 p.m. Large Predators of the Sound
Ever been in the Port Royal Sound and wonder what was swimming right under your
feet? Wonder no more! David Harter, President of Hilton Head Island Sportfishing Club,
will discuss many of the large creatures that call Port Royal Sound home.
3:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Welcome Home Carolina Snowball
She has finally made it home! Carolina Snowball has returned to Port Royal Sound thanks
to the hard work of longtime fan Kevin Vanacore. Come enjoy Kevin tell epic tale of this
albino dolphin, how she influenced the protection of all our beautiful sea mammals and
how 50 years later she returned to the Sound.
4:00 p.m. Catch & Cook
Have you been wanting to host a seafood soiree? Learn how to collect and cook your own
seafood. Craig Reaves of Sea Eagle Market will show you exactly how to collect and
prepare some of the Lowcountrys finest foods.
Eco Tours Thursday, November 13 will be a very special day because Captain
Amber will be here with her beautiful boat, Spartina. Get up close and personal with the
amazing creatures found in the waterways of the Port Royal Sound. An abbreviated version
of her full scale tours, but still a thrill! Once again, these will be offered on a first come, first
serve basis.
Family Fun Day Saturday, November 22 will be a day to bring the whole
family to the Maritime Center and start Thanksgiving break with a bang and splash! No
turkey shoots or dunking booths, but plenty of activities including nature arts & crafts, a
display of ancient fossils found in the Sound (were talking some really old stuff!), an array of
Lowcountry animals to meet, casting demonstrations and more. And thats just outside!
Inside our classroom well have a display of model ships and visiting lecturers. And, of
course, the Maritime Center will be open, as always, 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. with free
admission.
So stop by and see us often in November. Like the waters that
surround us, theres always something new to discover!
Regular Programming
Every day at the Maritime Center will bring
opportunities to learn something new. Not just
through the main Center exhibits, but through
regularly scheduled weekly programs offered
on and off site. The November schedule is still
being finalized but the tentatively includes:

Photography Workshops
Marsh Exploration
Kayaking
Cast Netting Instruction
