Halloween! t is a time for games! fun! fortunetelling and ghost stories. "t
Halloween on #1 $ctober! millions of people celebrate a very old festival.
%or centuries! people believed that Halloween was a night
when witches walked & or flew! & and ghosts and spirits
were on the loose. What makes Halloween so special? t is
its long and colourful history. %or all the fun and games! it is
part of the history of 'ritain! reland and northern %rance. t belongs to
(orth "merica too. Halloween is a fun now! t was the other way in the past
& very frightening.
(early everyone was very much afraid of witches. "t
Halloween people believed they were at their wicked worst!
and fires bla)ed across the countryside to frighten them and
other evil spirits away.
%ire! %ew centuries ago it meant warmth and light. "ll over the
world there were fire festivals and Halloween is one of them. " fire
protected the people from the powers of darkness. %armers used to
carry torches through their property to protect their houses from the bad and
cold winter months.
n old times young girls and boys could find what their
marriage prospects were at Halloween. " girl baked a cake
with a ring! a thimble and a coin in it. *he coin meant riches
for the finder+ the ring meant wedding is going to be soon+ but poor thimble
finder would never find a wife.
