Electrical Safety for Homeowners

ELCBs/RCCBs provide protection against electric shock from leakage currents by detecting any current flow through earth conductors. They help secure equipment and humans from fires and death caused by insulation failures or using improper tools which can damage wiring. The main risks are fires from abnormal temperature increases in cables and electrocution, which can damage vital organs. Leakage current devices provide direct contact protection with 30mA sensitivity for sockets and bathrooms, and indirect contact protection as a safety net. They are also recommended for equipment safety with <300mA sensitivity to prevent sparks from leakage currents between metal parts. When selecting an ELCB, its functions and the maximum leakage current for the circuit group must be considered, as ELCBs

ELCB / RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker)

How to secure the human and equipment?

Did you know that 30% of power disturbances on the
installation is not caused by overload or short circuit, but due to
disruption of isolation? Equipment and wiring insulation is bad, or
used the wrong tool can cause damage to equipment (fire) and
humans (death).

The risk of fire.

The main result of the interference current through the conductors or other equipment
is not expected to receive a stream is an abnormal increase in temperature. High temperatures
can cause damage to the cable or even a spark of fire in the material, then burned.
The risk of death
This occurs in humans and is also called "Electrocution". Electrocution is the flow of
current to the human body, and very dangerous. Two current flow damage vital body
functions : respiration and heart rate. The study states the risk scale based on two factors : the
rated current and duration of contacts.
Type of protection provided by the device leakage current
Leakage current devices provide two kinds of security :
Human Safety :
Direct contact
Occurs when a man holding a straight wire or cable-voltage phase. Safeguards against
the risk of direct contact can be:

Phase voltage cable insulation

Crib panels, etc.

But however it is recommended that any additional security, in other words using the
device leakage current to prevent the risk of electric entry into the human body. To that end,
the IEC standard has now been set mounting device leakage current with a sensitivity of 30
mA if human security is needed. (Sockets, electrical installations etc. bathroom.). Where
leakage current device will automatically trip if the detected leakage current exceeds the
threshold of 30 mA.

Indirect Contact
Occurs when people hold the metal part of voltage due to insulation failure. The
amount of leakage current depends on the leak resistance and neutral connection. Leakage
current will return to the source through security or through the earth conductor. Therefore,
the device leakage current with a sensitivity of 30 mA is highly recommended as a safety net
of indirect contacts,
Safety Equipment
It is known that the flow of 500mA at two points of contact of two adjacent metalvoltage can cause a spark. Whatever the grounding system is used for security against fire
must be equipped with security sensitivity: IDN <300 mA.
How to choose a ELCB?
To select the device leakage current, which must be considered is the function of each
of these devices the leakage current.
ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker)
This product has only one function, to detect leakage current. There is no safety
thermal and magnetic ELCB must be protected from short circuit by the MCB upper side.
ELCB should not be installed if possible exceed 6kA short circuit. ELCB can be combined
with the tool (auxiliary) such as: OFS, MX, MN that provide long-distance signaling and trip
distance. ELCB trip has its own mechanism and can also be operated manually like a switch.
This tool is used if the security necessary leakage current at the maximum circuit group
consists of 4 circuits. To select the device leakage current, which must be considered is the
function of each of these devices the leakage current.
