NIGHT SERVICES OVER BANK HOLIDAYS

Services operated on all night routes throughout Bank Holiday periods (except
Christmas). Where a day operation was based on a Sunday service, night routes
operated as for a Saturday night/Sunday morning on the night before and as
for a Sunday night/Monday morning on the night following.
Over Christmas, no night services operated on the nights of 24th125th and
25th/26th December. On the night of26th/27th December night routes operated
a Monday nightlTuesday morning service. All other night's operations
throughout the holiday operated as normal.
On the night of 31st December 1986/lst January 1987 extra buses operated
on most night routes, with the night bus network being centred on Aldwych,
instead of Trafalgar Square. The closure of Trafalgar Square (in connection
with the New Years Eve celebrations) caused large scale diversions in Central
London. An additional service was provided on routes N18, N50, N89 and N94
from Oxford arcus to their western termini. Route N79 operated in three
sections: Lewisham & Aldwych; Aldwych & Willesden Garage and Oxford
Circus & Kensal Rise Station.

London Regional Transport

Tendered Routes

.....l1lI

Following the rulings contained within

the London Regional Transport Act 1984,
LRT were bound to continue the arrange~
ment of submitting routes which were run
ning at a loss for possible tendering, a process
which began in earnest in 1985. The trend of
nationalised companies and independent
operators gaining these tenders continued
throughout 1986 with many a new name
appearing on routes within the Greater
London boundary .
The first losses of the year by London
Buses Ltd. were of routes 127 and 127A to
London Country Bus Services Ltd. (LCBS)
and of route 200 to London Cityrama Ltd.,
from 22nd March. For the operation of the
former two, LCBS acquired twelve Atlan
teans (AN294-305) from Southdown Motor
Services Ltd. and Brighton Hove and
District. Further details on all LCBS vehicles
can be found in the af)propriate section of
this volume. Route 200 was Cityrama's first
venture into stage carriage, having previously
operated vehicles either on private contract
or guided tours of central London. Painted
in a distinctive livery of deep blue with a
white band, twelve buses were acquired
from Ensignbus Ltd. All were former
London Transport DM/DMS type (DM935,
937,952,958,985, 1017, 1773, 1811, 1813,
1831, DMS1836, 1892), suitably upseated to
H45/28D layout and fitted with full-width
two-piece RCL-type destination displays.
Routes 127 and 127A were operated from
Chelsham garage (CM), while Cityrama
operated from their Silverthorne Road pre
mises in Battersea, some vehicles displaying
the garage code "C" which denoted Clapham.
A new schoolday only route, numbered
145A, was introduced between Goodmayes
'Lord Napier' and Chingford Station on 7th
April. Operation was undertaken by the
Eastern National Omnibus Company using
three Bristol VRTs (3105, 3119, 3123) in a
new livery incorporating the "Citybus"
fieetname. Operation was initially from that,
company's Enfield (ED) depot, before
transferring to new premises in Walthamstow
(WW).
On the next weekend, from 12th April,
London Buslines Ltd. (Len Wright Travel)
began operating route 195, again using
Fleetlines acquired from Ensignbus, notably
former London Transport DM962, 1026,
1036, 1041 and DMSl869 and 1882, joining

other vehicles previously acquired for route

81, adapted to H44/27D seating. Operation
was from their Isleworth and Lampton pre
mises. On the same date, London Buses
Ltd. retained operation of routes 79A and
125.
24th May saw a change of operations on
routes 20, 167,206 and school journeys on
route 242, these being renumbered 252 and
worked by minibuses. Leyland Nationals
from Eastern National were used, vehicles
concerned being 1779, 1780, 1789, 1791,
1797, 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803, 1810, 1825,
1826, 1858, 1882 and 1915. The same com
pany took charge also of route 275, using
Bristol VRTs from the batch 3041, 3080-3126,
all in the new Citybus colours. Since these
changes, a certain amount of intermixing
has occurred, resulting in route 20 normally
being VR-worked. All operations were from
the new depot in Walthamstow.
On the same day, further north, Sampson's
Coaches took charge of routes 217B, 250
and 251. The former route was operated by
Fleetlines, again acquired from Ensignbus,
and these were former London Transport
DM1030, 1119, 1120, 1122, 1762, 1794 and
DMS1881, all in a very attractive blue and
red livery to H44/27D configuration. Routes
250 and 251 were mainly operated by ageing
Leyland Nationals, likewise acquired from
Ensignbus, some previously owned by South
Wales Transport. These were OV0558L
(B49F), HHA145L (B51F), and LWN704L,
LWN705L, NWN721M, NWN728M and
TWN738N (all B52F).
Under the same programme, West's
Coaches of Epping took control of routes
201 and 206, incorporating school journeys
from routes 20 and 167 which were renum
bered 203 and 204. Leyland Nationals in an
attractive red and cream colour scheme
were used. HVF538L, HVF544L, LWN710L,
JTH761P and NFN70M were acquired for
this purpose, vehicles being to B52F seating.
Routes 179 and 179A were kept by London
Buses Ltd. at the same time.
A week later, on 31st May, route 268 was
taken over by London Country, who used
new Mercedes Benz L608D midibuses, clas
sified MBM, with B20+6 Reeve Burgess
bodywork conversions. Operation was from
Watford garage's outstation at the Scratch
wood service area on the Ml (SW). These
vehicles were replaced in December by

Dodge midibuses, the MBD class, again

with Reeve Burgess bodywork conversions,
this time seating 25.
In the midst of west London, local route
283 was handed over to Scancoaches, trading
as Scanbus, also on 31st May. Five new
Scania K92s with Jonckheere Trans-City
B47D+22 bodies (C351SVV-C355SVV)
were used, in a striking white livery with
, bold blue lines. Notable on the 283 after this
was the mis-spelling of "Schepherds Bush"
on certain panels on the Scanias' destination
blinds.
A large allocation change occurred from
21st June. Route 263 was retained on tender
by London Buses Ltd., while route PB 1 was
taken over by North Mymms Coaches under
tender from Hertfordshire County Council.
London Country took over route 142, which
was operated by ANs and LRs from Watford
garage (GR), and route 298. This was oper
ated by Hatfield garage (HF), using ANs
purchased second-hand from the Strathclyde
PTE. Ensignbus itself started operating
route 145 from this date. They used former
London Transport Fleetlines 1020, 1069,
1074, 1101, 1114, 1118, 1424, 1793 and 2000
which had been painted into a light blue and
silver livery and numbered B21O, 211, 212,
213,214,215,209,216 and 217 in that order.
These buses were to H45/28D layout.
London Country extended its tendering
operations on 19th July by taking over route
293, being worked by Dorking garage (DS).
Again, former Strathclyde Atlanteans were
used for this service.
Eastern National replaced the VRTs on
route 193 with five 20-seat Carlyle-converted
Ford Transit 190D minibuses, registered
C600NPU-C604NPU, from 2nd August. The
vehicles were in a yellow livery with green
lower panels and back, and were operated
under the new name of "Hornchurch
Hoppa". The "Hoppa" word was to become
more familiar throughout London as the
months went by.
Stanwell Buses Ltd., trading as Westlink,
took over the operation of routes 116, 117
and 203 from 9th August. This new company
was a subsidiary of London Buses Ltd. Fur
ther south, LCBS were again extending
their operations by taking over route 197
(remodelled as routes 197,197A and 197B).
Chelsham operated route 197, while God
stone operated routes 197A and 197B. Both

66

used ANs and LRs on the routes. Chelsham

(CM) lost route 197 to Godstone (GO) from
6th September, when it retained operation
of route 403, which had become a tendered
service.
From 16th August, London Country took
over the operation of route 51 from London
Buses Ltd. Swanley garage (SJ) was re
opened for the purpose, officially operating
as an outstation of Oartford (OT). Further
second-hand AN Atlanteans were used
initially on the route, again of the Alexan
der-bodied examples, before numerous
complaints about their unreliability and
capacity for leaking in inclement weather
led to their replacement largely by standard
examples drawn from around the fleet.
LCBS retained operation of their route 493,
under tender, at the same time.
Another subsidiary of London Buses
Ltd., Orpington Buses Ltd., was formed at
this date, and started the operation of new
tendered "R" routes, using the special
liveried "Roundabout" minibuses, detailed
previously. London Buses Ltd. retained
operation of routes 229 and 261, while
Metrobus Ltd. won the contracts for routes
61 and 361. Former London Transport DMS
Fleetlines were acquired for these routes,
the buses being former DMS1898, 1922,
1960, 1977,2052, 2054, 2056, 2167, 2173,
2198, 2200, 2211 and 2243. Metrobus's
existing routes 353, 354 and 357 were now
operated under a separate agreement with
LRT, although not contracted out.
From 7th September, London Country
Bus Services Ltd. was divided into four
operating companies, and these took over
the existing tendered services as follows:
London Country Bus (North East) Ltd.:
Routes 298,313.
London Country Bus (North West) Ltd.:
Routes 142,268.
London Country Bus (South East) Ltd.:
Routes 51,493, P4.
London Country Bus (South West) Ltd.:
Routes 127, 127A, 197, 197A, 197B,
293,403.
The final "takeovers" of 1986 occurred on
27th September, when part of route 107,
renumbered 307, was taken over by Eastern
National, using Bristol VRTs, and on 25th
October, when part of route 259, renum
bered 359 , was taken over by London
Country North East. This latter was only for
a three month period, using ANs from
Hatfield (HF) and Harlow (HA), until
Eastern National were in a position to take
up the contract. London Buses retained the
operation of route 242 between Potters Bar
and Waltham Abbey.

Above: Second-hand Atlanteans were purchased for use on LRT contract services; one such example,
AN294, travels along Mitchley Avenue on one of the few Sunday journeys to Selsdon on route 127A. LCBS
acquired this bus from Southdown. Richard Godfrey

Above: Metrobus used former London Transport/London Buses Fleetlines for operation of some of their
successful London tenders. Former DMS2052 represents the new order at Orpington War Memorial in
November. Stephen Madden

Above: Sarnpsons use a variety of vehicles to operate their tendered routes. HHA 145L was acquired from

Midland Fox in 1986 to work routes 250 and 251, and is seen in Waltham Cross on the latter. John Barnacle
