Travel Information Nordhausen

1. By air (in combination with rail)

The main airports near Nordhausen are:

• Frankfurt/ Main Airport (FRA)

• Hanover Airport (HAJ)

• Leipzig-Halle Airport (LEJ)

• Berlin Airports (BER)

• Hamburg Airport (HAM)

• Erfurt Airport (ERF)

In general, the fastest and easiest way to go to Nordhausen is to take a direct flight to one of
the indicated airports and to continue by public transport. At Frankfurt airport are two
railway stations with good train links. That is why we recommend to take a flight to
Frankfurt and to continue by train.

We do not recommend taking a connecting flight inside Germany to another airport because it
will take more time.

If you are travelling to Germany by plane, please note the following guidelines, in order to
make the onward journey to Nordhausen by public transport:

Arrival times should be BEFORE:

- Arrival at Frankfurt Airport 17:30 h

- Arrival at Hanover Airport 18:30 h

- Arrival at Leipzig-Halle Airport 20:30 h

- Arrival at Berlin Airports 17:30 h

- Arrival at Hamburg Airport 17:00 h

- Arrival at Erfurt Airport 19:30 h

INFORMATION ON MAKING THE ONWARD JOURNEY WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT:

- Frankfurt - Main Airport (FRA)

Directly at the airport there are two train stations: the regional station (Regionalbahnhof) and
the main-line station (Fernbahnhof).

We recommend to take the train link via Erfurt, leaving the main line station once per hour (a
few minutes after the full hour).

There are also train links via Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Göttingen or Northeim. There are several
trains per hour.

Depending on the connections, the journey will take between 3 hours 45 minutes and 5 hours.
Costs vary between EUR 60 and EUR 75.

- Berlin airports (BER)

There are two airports in Berlin. If you arrive in Schönefeld (SXF), take a suburban train from
the airport to Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof). If you arrive in Tegel (TXL), take the bus
“TXL” to Berlin central station.

From Berlin central station, there are various train links to Nordhausen. We recommend to go
to Halle and change there to Nordhausen. There are also train links via Leipzig, Magdeburg,
Braunschweig or Göttingen.

Depending on the connections, the journey will take between 3 and 4 hours (from Berlin
central station). Costs vary between EUR 45 and EUR 65.

- Hanover Airport (HAJ)

A journey from Hanover airport to Nordhausen takes approx. 3 hours and costs vary between
EUR 25 and EUR 40. You have to change trains in Hanover central station and Northeim. On
average there is one train per hour.

- Leipzig Halle Airport (LEJ)

Going by train from Leipzig/Halle airport will take around 2 hours and 30 minutes and it costs
approx. EUR 20.

central station you change the train. There is one train per hour going to Nordhausen.

SERVICE FOR OUR INTERNATIONAL GUEST LECTURERS

On request, we will send you the railway-timetables from your airport to Nordhausen.

As there is no rail link to Altenburg airport (AOC), we would try to pick you up, if you arrive
there.

2. By rail
Nordhausen is located at the intersection of Halle - Kassel and Erfurt - Northeim railway lines.
In each of these directions there leaves at least one train per hour (from 5:00 h to 23:00 h).
There is also a railway link from Nordhausen to Wernigerode.
You can find more detailed information and timetables in the internet
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml. On this webpage you can also book
your ticket online.
On request, we will send you the railway-timetable from your home town to
Nordhausen.

General information on rail travel:

On the type of train you choose for travelling depends the time of the journey and the costs
for the tickets.

Consequently, sometimes it is advisable to take a slower but less expensive train and to ask
for the cheapest train when you buy your ticket.

For example, the Intercity-Express (ICE) is one of the fastest trains, but also one of the most
expensive. Therefore, we would recommend you to take the Intercity (IC), which is also a fast
train, not much slower than the ICE - but it is not that expensive.

There are also special offers (e.g. BahnCard, Savings Fares 25 and 50) making the journey
cheaper. Some of them are only available online, others might be available at the ticket desks.

3. By car
Nordhausen is located at the crossroads of the national roads B 4 and B 80. The B 243 goes
from Nordhausen to Seesen. The recently built motorway A 38 goes from Leipzig to Göttingen
via Nordhausen.

- Coming from the East: the best approaches are B 80 and A 38 from Halle.

- Coming from the South: the best approach is taking the A 71 and then the B 4
from Erfurt.

- Coming from the North: the best approach is taking the A 7 (Hamburg -
Würzburg) and leave at Seesen exit via the B 243 to Nordhausen.

- Coming from West: taking the A 44 to Kassel and change to the A 7 (direction
Hanover) and leave at Drammetal to the A 38 in direction Nordhausen.

- Coming from the Southwest: the best approach is after taking the A 4
(Eisenach-Ost exit) using the B 247 and B 4. Or you take the A 7 motorway till
the exit Drammetal and change to the A 38 in direction Nordhausen.
