Upgrading Disk Firmware
July, 2014
This document describes how to use the Install Disk Firmware Online wizard for your EMC
VNX system. The Install Disk Firmware Online wizard is part of the Unisphere Service
Manager (USM). The wizard checks for and downloads disk firmware updates, and then
extracts and installs the firmware files to the system. If the firmware files you want to install
are already on the storage system, the download and extract steps are not necessary.

Before you start


To install disk firmware, you need:
u

A Windows host or Windows virtual machine that is:


l

Running a supported operating system version. For supported versions, refer to


the EMC Serviceability Release Notes, which are available on the EMC Online
Support website

Connected to the Internet if you need to install the USM and/or disk firmware
updates.

Running Java Runtime Environment (JRE). For supported versions, refer to the EMC
Serviceability Release Notes.

An account on the EMC Online Support website.


CAUTION

The Online Disk Firmware upgrade is intended for systems running operating
environment software release 30 patch.509 or later. There is a risk that host writes may
not be acknowledged correctly if the upgrade is run on a system with an earlier version.
For more information about known issues with the Online Disk Firmware upgrade, refer
to the USM release notes.

Downloading and installing the Unisphere Service Manager


If you do not already have USM installed on your Windows management station,
download and install the latest version:
Procedure
1. From the EMC Online Support website, select Downloads.
The Downloads page appears.
2. In the Find a Product search field, enter your VNX model number and click Enter.
A list of the available downloads for the VNX Series appears.
3. From download list, select the Unisphere Service Manager link and save the software
to your host or management station.
4. In the folder where you saved the USM, double-click the executable (.exe) file.
5. Follow the instructions that appear.
After you accept the license agreement, the wizard verifies that the host or
management station is running the latest supported Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
version.

If the server is running an earlier version of the JRE, select Yes when asked if you
want to continue with the installation.
The installation wizard prompts you to download and install the latest supported
version of the JRE from the Oracle website.

If the server is running a later version of the JRE, the installation wizard asks if you
want to continue with the installation.
Select Yes to continue or No to quit the installation.

Upgrading Disk Firmware

NOTICE

If you select Yes, the USM may not work properly with a later JRE version. If you
select No, and manually remove the later version of the JRE, other applications that
require this version may not work properly.
6. When the installation is complete, click Done.

Downloading disk firmware packages and running the Install Disk


Firmware Wizard
Use the Installing Disk Firmware Online wizard in the Unisphere Service Manager (USM)
to install disk firmware. This wizard determines if the storage system supports a nondisruptive, online disk firmware upgrade. If so, the wizard guides you through the
necessary steps to perform the upgrade.
To upgrade disk firmware:
Procedure
1. Start the USM by doing one of the following:

Click the Unisphere Service Manager icon on your desktop, or

Select Start > All Programs or Start > Programs, then select EMC > Unisphere >
Unisphere Service Manager > Unisphere Service Manager.

Note

You must first download the firmware packages using the USM Disk Firmware Package
Download Wizard. Then, use the Install Disk Firmware Wizard to complete the
installation.
2. Download the disk firmware package by selecting Downloads > Download Disk
Firmware Packages and following the steps in the Disk Firmware Package Download
Wizard.
3. Once you have completed the download, log in to your system.
4. Select Software > Disk Firmware > Install Disk Firmware Online.
5. Follow the instructions in the Install Disk Firmware Wizard to complete the
installation.

Verifying disk firmware installation with EMC Unisphere


For each disk:
Procedure
1. Start Unisphere by entering the IP address of an SP in the storage system in a browser
window.
2. In the systems list, select your system.
3. Select System > Hardware > Disks.
4. In the Disks view, right-click on the disk name and click Properties.
5. Verify that the correct firmware revision is listed.
