1. GENERAL MP-2S
This MP-2S Overspeed Unit is the digital-type Overspeed Signal Generator that selects a machine
for input, from MODEL RD-05A Tacho Driver, MODEL FK Series and Magnetic Pickup.
This unit is mounted and used in the MP-2W Series Instrument Rack with the MP-2P Series Power
Supply Unit.
• Study all manuals associated with this unit, including the MP-2P Series Power
Mandatory Supply Unit, MP-2W Series Instrument Rack, and other manuals related to the
Rotation Detectors that are used.
• When the Protection System is designed to be used with this unit, do not attempt to
depend on a single meter for machine protection. Rather, use other meters or
Danger
machinery protection equipment to design the system.
In case machine protection is performed using a single meter, and that meter is
experiencing a problem, it may cause severe injury or damage to the equipment.
• Depending upon certain conditions, such as gear tooth size, Set gap, or number of
Mandatory revolutions, the output voltage (Vpk-pk) may change, and it is possible that high
voltage can be generated. The output voltage of the Magnetic Pickup should stay
within the input voltage range of the unit (300Vpk-pk).

3. WIRING METHODS MP-2S
• For handling weak signals, the Signal Transmission Cables connected between this
unit and the Transducer should use 3-wire shielded cables or 3-wire type instrument
Mandatory
cables for weak current meters with which each bundle of wires is shielded.
(In case un-shielded cables, or cables in which each bundle of wires is not shielded
separately, are used, the measured value may be affected by external noise.
Therefore, do not use these cable types.)
Recommended Cables
Cable Recommended Note
CVVS Recommended cabling as per API st’d 670
(3-core shielded cable)
Normal :
CONDUIT PIPE Silver-plated braid
EXCELLENT Recommended :
Copper tape shielded
(Core wire : Soft copper wire)
SHIELDED WIRE Use conduit pipe (cable rack) for wiring.
• Use different cables for Pulse Signals (Phase-maker, Revolution) from the cables for
MANDATORY
Displacement or Vibration Signals.
• Cables for Signal Transmission System should not be mixed with other cables
associated with the Control System or Power Supply System.
• Use conduit pipes or cable racks for cabling work.

the RD, FK Driver.
• It is possible that Transducer abnormality detection may be delayed by several
seconds.
• In case the Alarm is set up as “Self-Hold”, the Alarm should be reset 25 seconds or
more after the system turns on or when the Overspeed unit is inserted while the
system’s wires are live.
-10-
4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION MP-2S
• BYPASS Signal Input controls all units, except the Power Supply Unit, in the
Warning Instrument Rack.
Be careful of the movement of the contacts on each unit.
• Attempting to change the set up by yourself may cause damage to the machines.
Mandatory Contact the nearest SHINKAWA Electric Service Center for assistance.
• In case the unit is removed from the Instrument Rack, the spaces between all the
Warning contact output terminals will be open.

4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION MP-2S
• Do not attempt to change the setup of the OK Alarm Contact Output Method by
Mandatory yourself, as it may cause damage to the machines. Contact the SHINKAWA
Service Center nearest you for assistance.
• The RES Signal that is input to the terminal block on the rear panel of the Instrument
Warning Rack works on all units except the Power Supply Unit.
• It is not possible to reset the Overspeed Output being output.
• In case the Overspeed Detection System consists of three units, when the Deviation
Warning Alarm is sent out, it is possible to specify the unit that is experiencing an abnormal
condition. In case the system ‘2 out of 2’ it is not possible to specify the unit.

• In case the target moves in the axial direction by differential expansion, etc., making
Mandatory sure the sensor does not stray from the target face, add the amount the target
moves to the value D.
• Using the method to provide the circular projection or round hole on the rotating
Mandatory shaft, according to the pitch error, the eccentricity of the shaft, the vibration, or the
axial direction displacement, etc., measuring error occurs easily. Therefore, it
should not be used for the Rotation Detection target.
• If the spaces between gear teeth are uneven, it may cause incorrect operation of the
Mandatory unit. Therefore, use gears in which the spacing is even.

6. OPERATION METHOD MP-2S
2 A Trigger mode switch (SW1) is on the main board. When the switch lever is up, it indicates
the Manual Trigger mode (MANU). When the switch lever is down, the Auto Trigger mode

• In case an eddy-current type transducer is used, because of the influence of set gap
Mandatory changes or transducer frequency characteristics, etc. in a high-rotating region, it is
possible that the input waveform condition could become worse. It is absolutely
necessary to record the waveform in all rotating regions.

3Vpk-pk or less,
• If the internal noise of the input signal from the sensor (the maximum level of all rotating
regions) is 0.5Vpk-pk or more.
Setup Condition
• If Hysteresis is set up, the conditions below should be met. If the conditions are not
Mandatory met, it may not be possible to collect precise measurements.
Input Waveform
B: Max. Value of
Internal Noise
A: Min. Value of Input Signal
If the above conditions are not met, it will be necessary to make additional changes.
• Decrease the Set Gap and increase the input signal amplitude.
• Increase the target size for the Rotation Detector and the input signal amplitude.
• Try some different noise strategies to reduce the internal noise level.
The greater the conditions of 1 & 2 , the more the measurement becomes
stable. It is recommended to setup the values in the system as large as
possible.

6. OPERATION METHOD MP-2S
Input the RESET signal to the terminal block on the rear panel of the Instrument Rack.
For more wiring method details, refer to the MP-2W Instrument Rack instruction manual.
• The RESET Signal input to the terminal block on the rear panel works on all units,
Warning except the Power Supply Unit, in the Instrument Rack.
• It is not possible to reset the Alarm output being output.

6. OPERATION METHOD MP-2S
• If the rotation machine has an increasing or decreasing speed that exceeds the
Warning setup allowable difference within 5 seconds, it may possible to output the Deviation
Alarm when the speed is increasing or decreasing.
• While the Deviation Alarm outputs, the TRP Alarm and ALT Alarm are connected.
Warning
• If the Deviation Alarm is setup with the ‘2 out of 2’ system, both units send the alarm
Warning when the Deviation Alarm occurs. Even when the system is ‘2 out of 3,’ if a unit is

when the TIMER terminals on the rear panel of the Instrument Rack are short-circuited.)
2. Before the TIMER terminals are open, the measured value does not exceed the setup number of

In case the START-UP TIMER is requested when the unit is ordered, but the function is not
used, setup the START-UP TIMER Number of Revolutions at ‘0’.
Follow the warnings below and work safely.
• After the START-UP TIMER is completed, between the contact input terminals

8. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION METHODS MP-2S
In order to confirm the unit’s soundness, it is strongly recommended to check the maintenance and
inspection items in a periodical inspection. If frequent maintenance and inspection is impossible,
it must be done so at least once every three years.
• To prevent electrocution, only perform wiring work after turning off the power supply.

(2) Setup the number of revolution speed should be within the range.
(3) The unit memorizes the previous number of revolution. If the output has not

(4) The Analog output may change immediately after the On-line Test is selected.
(5) It is not a trouble or failure though normal value may not be outputted for about
