1. GENERAL MP-2S

This MP-2S Overspeed Unit is the digital-type Overspeed Signal Generator that selects a machine
for input, from MODEL RD-05A Tacho Driver, MODEL FK Series and Magnetic Pickup.
This unit is mounted and used in the MP-2W Series Instrument Rack with the MP-2P Series Power
Supply Unit.

• Study all manuals associated with this unit, including the MP-2P Series Power
Mandatory Supply Unit, MP-2W Series Instrument Rack, and other manuals related to the
Rotation Detectors that are used.

• Regarding Cable Mega-test (Insulation Test)

Warning Before the Cable Mega-test is performed, it is mandatory to disconnect all cables
from their respective meters. When reconnecting the cables to the meters after the
test is completed, the cables must be forced to short circuit in order to discharge the
electric charge.
Reconnection of the cables while the unit is still charged may cause damage to the
meters.

• When the Protection System is designed to be used with this unit, do not attempt to
depend on a single meter for machine protection. Rather, use other meters or
Danger

4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION MP-2S

4-1 INDICATION FUNCTION

This function is to select the value from a measured number of revolutions, Overspeed setup
value and Sensor Set Gap voltage, etc., and show the value on an LED indicator.

4-2 OVERSPEED CONTACT FUNCTION

MP-2S Overspeed Unit has a function “Overspeed Contact Function” to detect overspeed. It is
possible to set up two different numbers of revolutions on an overspeed contact. In descending
order from the highest number of revolutions, the TRP (TRIP) contact, and then the ALT (ALERT)
contact, can be output.
The characteristics of each Relay are the following:
• TRP Contact:
When the number of revolutions exceeds the setup value, have the three C-contacts
operate at the same time. (DPDT) However, the setup value should be within the
Monitor range and the same or higher as the ALT setup value.
• ALT Contact:
When the number of revolutions exceeds the setup value, have the one C-contacts operate
at the same time. (DPDT) However, the setup value should be within the Monitor range
and the same or less as the TRP setup value.

4-3 NOT-OK ALARM FUNCTION

When the input signal level from the Transducer is abnormal or the Deviation Alarm (refer to
section 6-9) occurs, the Not-OK Alarm Contact outputs and OK indicator flashes.
When the power is turned on, the CPU abnormality is detected, or the Overspeed Unit is inserted
while the system’s wires are live, the Not-OK Alarm Contact is output for about 25 seconds.
At this time, TRP Alarm and ALT Alarm Contact signal will be outputted at the same time with
the Not-OK Alarm Contact output. In case the input signal level abnormality from the
Transducer is detected, the Not-OK Alarm, according to the OFF DELAY timer, is sounded for 5
seconds, even after the input signal level is back to the normal level. While the On-line Test is in
progress, the Not-OK Contact is output.

Detectable Transducer Abnormality

Input Type Detectable Abnormality Condition

• While the machine is rotating, it may not detect an undersized Sensor Set Gap of
Warning
the RD, FK Driver.
• It is possible that Transducer abnormality detection may be delayed by several
seconds.
• In case the Alarm is set up as “Self-Hold”, the Alarm should be reset 25 seconds or
more after the system turns on or when the Overspeed unit is inserted while the
system’s wires are live.

4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION MP-2S

4-4 TRP ALARM BYPASS FUNCTION

It is possible to disconnect the TRP Alarm by short-circuiting between the BYPASS signal input
terminals on the terminal block on the rear panel in the MP-2W Instrument Rack.
While the BYPASS function is in progress, the BYPASS indication lamp on the front panel is lit.

• The machine is not protected while the BYPASS function is in progress.

Warning

• BYPASS Signal Input controls all units, except the Power Supply Unit, in the
Warning Instrument Rack.
Be careful of the movement of the contacts on each unit.

4-5 POWER-ON TIMER MODE

The function is performed for about 25 seconds after the power is turned on or CPU reset is
performed. While the function is in progress, the number of revolutions measurement can be
made. The Analog output is disconnected.
While the POWER-ON TIMER Mode is in progress, the TRP/ALT alarm output and Not-OK
Contact is output and BYP lamp flashes.

4-6 CONTACT OUTPUT MODE

When this unit is ordered, it is possible to select on each contact from ;

4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION MP-2S

4-7 CONTACT RESET METHOD

In case the measured value or the input signal from the Transducer is released from the alarm
condition, each contact output and indication can be canceled from the alarm condition
automatically by using ‘AUTO-RESET’. The Alarm Reset according to the key operations, or
the Alarm output situation can be held until short-circuiting between the Reset terminals on the
rear panel in the Instrument Rack by using ‘SELF-HOLD’, can be selected on each contact. TRP
Alarm and ALT Alarm setups of alarm functions can be changed by yourself. Follow the
procedure in Section 6-3.

• Do not attempt to change the setup of the OK Alarm Contact Output Method by
Mandatory yourself, as it may cause damage to the machines. Contact the SHINKAWA
Service Center nearest you for assistance.

• The RES Signal that is input to the terminal block on the rear panel of the Instrument
Warning Rack works on all units except the Power Supply Unit.
• It is not possible to reset the Overspeed Output being output.

4-8 PULSE OUTPUT

The input signal from the Transducer, shaped into a waveform, is output from the PUL terminal of
a certain terminal block on the rear panel of the Instrument Rack. The Pulse Output Signal is
not insulated from the input.

4-9 RECORDER OUTPUT

The Analog signal that is in proportion to the number of revolutions (4-20mAC or 1-5VDC) is
output from the REC terminal on the rear panel of the Instrument Rack, The Recorder Output
Signal is insulated from the input.

4-10 DEVIATION ALARM FUNCTION

If Overspeed detection is performed with ‘corresponding to 2 out of 2’ or ‘corresponding to 2 out
of 3’ construction, by mutually observing the measurement result of each unit, it is possible to
detect system abnormalities. (DEVIATION ALARM) For Overspeed Units, when a unit
outputs, the excessive measuring error over the set up allowable range, compared to other units, the
TRP/ALT alarm output and Not-OK contact is performed by sending out the Deviation Alarm. In
case the system is ‘2 out of 3,’ it is possible to specify the unit that is experiencing as abnormal
condition, In case the system is ‘2 out of 2,’ both units send the alarm, In case the Deviation
Alarm function is requested when the unit is ordered, it is still possible to invalidate the
function with the front panel key operation.

• In case the Overspeed Detection System consists of three units, when the Deviation
Warning Alarm is sent out, it is possible to specify the unit that is experiencing an abnormal
condition. In case the system ‘2 out of 2’ it is not possible to specify the unit.

-12-
4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION MP-2S

4-11 ON-LINE TEST FUNCTION

If the input is switched to the inside oscillator and the simulated input is used, TRP / ALT Alarm
and Recorder Output operation confirmation is possible. It is possible to use this setup to confirm
Mandatory only the number-of-revolution measurement bypassing the Alarm.
While the On-line Test is in progress, the Not-OK Contact is output,

• The On-line Test function makes accuracy confirmation impossible. To confirm

Warning accuracy, connect the function generator, etc. to the input terminals on the rear
panel of the Instrument Rack.
• When performing the On-line Test Function, more warnings are necessary. Study
Section 8-5 first.

4-12 START-UP TIMER FUNCTION

In the cases below, the unit may assume a system abnormality and ‘TRP/ALT alarm’, ‘Not-OK
Contact’ output:
1. When the START-UP TIMER setup time has expired.(START-UP TIMER setup time begins
when the TIMER terminals on the rear panel of the Instrument Rack are short-circuited.)
2. Before the TIMER terminals are open, the measured value does not exceed the setup number
of revolutions.
IF this function is not used, between the TIMER terminals should be open.
In case the START-UP TIMER function is requested when the unit is ordered, it is still
possible to invalidate the function with the front panel key operation.

4-13 TRIGGER FUNCTION

Depending upon the input waveform, the Auto-Trigger Mode allows one to setup the appropriate
Trigger level value automatically (setup prior to shipment), the Manual Trigger Mode allowing one
to specify the Trigger voltage. These two functions may be selected by the Trigger Mode Switch.
For more details about the Trigger Function, refer to Section 6-4.

6-4-1 TRIGGER MODE DESCRIPTIONS

AUTO TRIGGER MODE (SETUP PRIOR TO SHIPMENT)
According to the input waveform, the Trigger level will set automatically. In case the Trigger
mode is used in the conditions below, select Auto Trigger Mode.

• For MS Magnetic Pickup input specification

• For Eddy-current type transducer input specification, the target for Rotation Detection fulfills
the recommended shape that is written in Section 6-4-2 (Gear, Projection and Groove Shape
for Rotation Detection), and the duty ratio for input is within the range 10-90%.
DUTY RATIO
Duty ratio = A/(A+B)×100%

BA

MANUAL TRIGGER MODE

It is possible to set the Trigger Level Setup Value manually. Except for the MS Magnetic Pickup,
if the conditions below are met, select Manual Trigger Mode.

• The target for Rotation Detection is not the recommended shape in Section 6-4-2 (Gear,
Projection and Groove Shape for Rotation Detection).
• Input Duty Ratio exceeds the range 10-90%.

-26-
6. OPERATION METHOD MP-2S

6-4-2 GEAR, PROJECTION AND GROOVE SHAPE FOR ROTATION DETECTION

In order to receive the pulse-like input signal proportional to the number of revolutions from the
sensor, a projection or a key-way is needed on the gear or the shaft. According to the shape of the
target for the Rotational Signal Detection, the Trigger cannot catch correctly and may cause
incorrect operation. Below is an example of RD-05A Tacho Driver input which shows the sizes
of the target that certainly detect the number of revolutions in any conditions, like gap change from
shaft movement or vibrations.

(1) Gear
D BA
C

(2) Projection

D A

• Make the curve along a concentric circle. ‘A’ should not be flat. Otherwise,
Mandatory incorrect operation may result due to an abnormal waveform.

(3) Key-way

-27-
6. OPERATION METHOD MP-2S

• In case the target moves in the axial direction by differential expansion, etc., making
Mandatory sure the sensor does not stray from the target face, add the amount the target
moves to the value D.

• Using the method to provide the circular projection or round hole on the rotating
Mandatory shaft, according to the pitch error, the eccentricity of the shaft, the vibration, or the
axial direction displacement, etc., measuring error occurs easily. Therefore, it
should not be used for the Rotation Detection target.

• Sensor installation position should be in the center of the target shaft.

Mandatory

• If the spaces between gear teeth are uneven, it may cause incorrect operation of the
Mandatory unit. Therefore, use gears in which the spacing is even.

• Make sure of Gear form for rotation pick up

Warning The wrong detection may be caused because of signal distortion when the rotation
measurement by the rectangular gear form is done by electromagnetic pick up.
And, even if, it was involute gear form, it has the possibility which causes the same
phenomenon when module number is bigger.

6-6 HYSTERESIS SETUP METHOD

6-6-1 HOW TO DETERMINE THE HYSTERESIS

It is possible to select from 0.5V, 1V and 2V using the switches on the main board.
If the conditions below are met, a setup change may be necessary,

• If the input signal level from the sensor (the minimum level of all rotating regions) is
3Vpk-pk or less,
• If the internal noise of the input signal from the sensor (the maximum level of all rotating
regions) is 0.5Vpk-pk or more.

Setup Condition

• If Hysteresis is set up, the conditions below should be met. If the conditions are not
Mandatory met, it may not be possible to collect precise measurements.

Input Waveform
B: Max. Value of
Internal Noise
A: Min. Value of Input Signal

Cond. 1 A - (Hysteresis Setup Value) > 2V

Cond. 2 (Hysteresis Setup Value) - B > 0.5V

If the above conditions are not met, it will be necessary to make additional changes.

If Condition 1 is not met:

• Decrease the Set Gap and increase the input signal amplitude.
• Increase the target size for the Rotation Detector and the input signal amplitude.

If Condition 2 is not met:

• Try some different noise strategies to reduce the internal noise level.

The greater the conditions of 1 & 2 , the more the measurement becomes
stable. It is recommended to setup the values in the system as large as
possible.

6-9 HOW TO USE THE DEVIATION ALARM

Study this section in case the Deviation Alarm Function has been ordered with this unit.

Overspeed Detection System is performed with ‘corresponding to 2 out of 2’ or ‘corresponding to

2 out of 3’ construction, so perform the measurement value comparison by mutual observation.
In case the error exceeds the allowable difference, it is possible to output TRP/ALT alarm contact
and NOT-OK Alarm contact. Follow the cautions below and work safely.

• The hardware setup may only be confirmed. It is not to be changed.

Mandatory If a change is desired, contact the nearest SHINKAWA office near you for
assistance.

• If the rotation machine has an increasing or decreasing speed that exceeds the
Warning setup allowable difference within 5 seconds, it may possible to output the Deviation
Alarm when the speed is increasing or decreasing.

• While the Deviation Alarm outputs, the TRP Alarm and ALT Alarm are connected.
Warning

• If the Deviation Alarm setup value is small, because of acceleration, deceleration or

Warning uneven rotation, it may cause the alarm to output. Make the setup value as large
as possible.

• If the Deviation Alarm is setup with the ‘2 out of 2’ system, both units send the alarm
Warning when the Deviation Alarm occurs. Even when the system is ‘2 out of 3,’ if a unit is
not mounted or the input abnormality is output, the system will perform the same as
the ‘2 out of 2’ system.

-38-
6. OPERATION METHOD MP-2S

6-9-1 CONFIRM THE SYSTEM NUMBER AND ID NUMBER

In order to output the Deviation Alarm, it is necessary to mutually compare each unit output.
It is also necessary to setup the System Number and ID Number to discriminate each unit.
Incorrect setup or duplication of the System Number or ID Number may result in incorrect
operation or make mutual comparison impossible.
The System Number can discriminate up to 3 systems in the same Instrument Rack.
The ID Number can discriminate up to 3 systems in the same system. If the ID Number is
duplicated, but the System Number is different, it is possible for it to be discriminated.
