3 PTM 4.90 Features & Improvements for Power Transformer Testing

3.1 Vibro Acoustic Measurement (VAM) – TESTRANO 600

The VAM1 is a new accessory to the TESTRANO 600. The VAM test measures the vibrations produced during
the switching operation by means of acceleration sensors temporarily mounted on the transformer tank. This
method offers the possibility to perform measurements on an energized transformer and, accordingly, provide
valuable information on the condition of the OLTC without the need for outages. By recording a detailed
vibration pattern and comparing it to a fingerprint, it becomes possible to detect and to track changes of the
mechanical integrity of the OLTC.

> VAM1 Package

The required hardware to perform the measurement consists of the data acquisition unit (VAM1), three
piezo-electric sensors that are mounted on the transformer tank wall, the connection cables and a
transport bag.

Figure 1 VAM1 package which is used to record the vibration signals of the OLTC during the switching operation.

© OMICRON 2022 Page 2 of 34

> Measurement Results
The VAM results are represented by a so-called frequency-time diagram and an envelope curve. The
first one displays both the time and the frequency domain of the recorded signal as a heatmap, which
helps to identify the main switching operations of the OLTC and judge the overall signal quality. The
envelope curve is derived from integration in the frequency domain. This way it robust against external
noise sources and the starting point for the evaluation. In addition, a synchronous OLTC scan (DRM)
and motor current measurement is performed to combine electrical and vibration data. The four resulting
graphs are show in Figure 2.

Figure 2 The four result graphs of a VAM data set.

> Analysing the Results

In order to analyse the OLTC condition using the VAM data, a comparison with reference data is
recommended, e.g. from a previous measurement or a sister unit. Figure 3 shows the comparison
functionality in PTM which allows the user to select individual traces from the PTM data base and
compare it against reference data. Additionally, up to twelve cursors can be positioned to perform and
in-depth timing analysis.

Figure 3 Comparison tab in PTM which is used to compare recorded signals to reference data in the PTM data base.

> Application Note
Additional information on the setup of the measurement and the analysis of the VAM data can be found
in the corresponding application note in our customer area.

3.2 Three-phase OLTC Scan – TESTRANO 600

The three-phase OLTC scan is an addition to the already existing single-phase OLTC scan feature of the
TESTRANO 600. It allows to simultaneously record the dynamic current curve on all three phases of a YN-
winding. On the one hand the measurement time can be reduced significantly, as the OLTC has to be
switching through its tap range only twice (up and down). On the other hand, the simultaneous recording
reveals possible asynchronism between the phases.
The continuous recording of the whole tap range allows to spot any irregularities, Figure 4.

Figure 4 Continuous recording of the tap switch operation of all three phases.

By zooming in on the individual tap switch operations the user can analyse the pattern of the curve itself as
well as the asynchronism between the phases. Therefore, up to twelve cursors can be positioned. For each
tap switch a snapshot including the cursor placement can be taken to be included in the report.

Figure 5 Detailed view of a single tap switch with cursor placement and calculated delta timings.

In contrast to the single-phase approach, it is important to note that the three-phase measurement does not
yield any static winding resistance readings.

> Licensing
The three-phase OLTC scan feature is included in the existing OLTC Scan license.

3.3 Improvements
The TESTRANO 600 control loop of the CP TD12 system has been improved. In some cases, the related
issue caused the exciting current test to stop the measurement, mainly when the test was carried out on the
LV windings of a transformer.

5 PTM 4.90 Features & Improvements for Instrument Transformer

Testing
> Correction factor support for CT Rogowski, CT Low Power & VT electronics on CPC embedded
In reference to IEC 61869-10 & IEC 61869-11 correction factor support had been added for low-power
current and voltage transformers.
This allows to correct for mentioned asset types, that an corrected transformation ratio and corrected
phase offset can directly calculated based on nameplate information.
Thus, with applying individual asset ratio and phase offset correction, the designated low-power
instrument transformer can be checked stricter accuracy classes.
Note 1: Correction factors can be applied in the Setting page of the test cards.
Note 2: Correction factors can be applied or adjusted after a measurement had been executed.
Note 3: Measurements where Correction factors had been applied will be marked with a “!” symbol.

9 PTM 4.80 Features & Improvements for Instrument Transformer
Testing

9.1 Improved measurement time for CT Excitation

> When noise suppression is deactivated, the measurement duration is reduced in average around
2/3.
Note: With activated noise suppression, the measurement duration stays the same.

9.2 Other CT Excitation changes

> Auto-scaling when CT Excitation measurement is finished
Up to now, the maximum current & voltage range was fixed to the maximum stated test voltage & test
current.
With 4.80, the voltage and current range is fitted at the end of the measurement to the measured values,
allowing a bigger appearance of the excitation curve on the screen.

Note: In PTM, you need to de-select and re-select the curve in the Plot view.

> The warning message, A non-standard CT behaviour was detected during CT excitation
measurement appears at the end.
In case a rising current is detected with a falling output voltage, for example due to external disturbances
in the lower part of the linear CT curve, the warning message could appear during measurement.
When this situation now appears, users are informed at the end of the measurement about potentially
inaccuracy and can decide to reperform the measurement, for example with noise suppression option, or
accepting the results.

10 PTM 4.80 Features & Improvements for Grounding System Testing

1 PTM 4.70 Features & Improvements for Rotating Machines Testing
New Electromagnetic Core Imperfection Test with CPC 100
The electromagnetic imperfection test, also known as the stray flux measurement or ELCID test, is
performed to detect stator core interlamination problems that cause overheating and damage to the stator
core during machine operation. This test is recommended on a routine basis to evaluate the integrity of the
insulation between the stator core layers to check the condition of a machine’s stator. Other applications are
as a fingerprint measurement during factory acceptance and commissioning of the machine, as well as after
previously detected problems and repairs.

During the test, the laminated stator core is energized with an auxiliary winding at a low percentage (e.g.
4%) of the nominal flux. Potential short circuits in the laminations are detected by the stray flux measured
using a Chattock coil.

The test requires the Stator Core Measurement Upgrade Option for the CPC 100:

Measurement configuration:

- Semi-automatic scanning of the stator core

- Measurement and excitation in one solution controlled by PTM and CPC 100

This test determines the current which causes the overcurrent release to trip the breaker. Such releases
are also known as indirect overcurrent release and they are used in low-cost installations where a self-
powered overcurrent relay redirects the fault current via a tripping transformer right to the overcurrent
release of a circuit breaker.

> Motion Based Timing Measurement

The trip/close time measurement is based on the motion starting point (measured via the TN3
accessory). Useful for breakers without trip/close coils.
